Suddenly, he stilled and pressed a hard kiss to her lips. “I am in love with you, Cassidy Davidson. That is what you need to understand. I don’t want to be apart from you again. Please.”
“Never. I promise. I love you, Alejandro.” Cassidy ran her fingers through the dark silk of his hair.
Alejandro gasped in pleasure as she said the words, his mouth trailing along her neck. “Again. Say it again.”
“I love you. I love you,” she whispered. A whimper left her throat as the intensity of his thrusts increased. He moved his hips, catching her body with his. Cassidy’s entire body was tightening as the crescendo building inside of her began to peak.
He leaned over her, nibbling at her lower lip. “Cassidy.”
The pleasure ripped through her with force as her body gripped and pulled at his cock. She heard him suck in his breath before he lapsed into Spanish and pounded forcefully into her. Burying his face in her hair he thrust once more, whispering her name as he climaxed.
For the longest time she lay beneath him, listening to the beating of his heart. A tear ran down her cheek. She was overcome with emotion. Pressing a kiss to his lips she whispered again, “I love you, Alejandro Vega.”
FOURTEEN
Alejandro ran his fingers up and down Cassidy’s spine, loving the way her body reacted to his touch. That was one thing he loved about her. There were many others. The last month without her had been difficult. His world without Cassidy was muted and dull. Gray. In the short time they spent together, Cassidy understood more about him than anyone save his own mother. She was grounded. Real. And his bossiness didn’t put her off. She would do as she pleased anyway, but Cassidy was smart enough to allow him the allusion she listened to him. The thought made him smile.
He nibbled at the back of her neck, gratified when she rubbed her perfect little butt against his erection in response.
Cassidy turned in his arms, her beautiful hair spilling about the pale skin of her shoulders as she faced him. “I’m sorry I didn’t wait. I should have let you explain.” Her lips turned up. “I can’t believe you are here. That you did all of this for me.” She stroked the side of his face until he took her hand, pressing a kiss to the palm.
“I meant it,” he said softly. “I am in love with you. I have never been in love before. I don’t know why or how it happened so quickly. It is right though. We need to be together. You know this?”
“I know this, Alex. I did lie about one thing though.” Cassidy gave him a teasing look. “I’m not really on a keto diet.”
“I am relieved. That could have been a deal breaker.”
She laughed and reached her hand down to stroke his thigh.
Alex was already hard, wanting her again. He planned on staying in this bed with her for the rest of the night. At least. There was enough food in the kitchen for a day or two. He wanted to see her wear his robe again and the jacuzzi tub in the bathroom was made for two.
“So, what do you think of this condo?” His mouth tasted the skin of her shoulder blade. Cassidy was delicious. His ripe little peach.
“You’ve already bought this place, haven’t you?” Cassidy murmured between sighs of pleasure. Her hands glided back and forth over the length of him. She flung a leg over his hip and moved closer, leading his cock inside, inch by inch.
“Yes. I’ve bought it. I want you to live here with me.” God. She was so tight. Wet. Alex nearly passed out it felt so good.
They didn’t speak again for a very long time.

Much later, Cassidy lay snuggled up to him, the rust-colored strands of her hair spilling across his chest. He rubbed the copper curls between his fingers, watching the way the color caught the light of the setting sun outside the window.
“I want very much to marry you,” he whispered. “I may have to insist.”
“Marriage?” Cassidy sat up with a surprised look. “Are you sure?”
“Very.”
She gave him a sideways glance. “You’ve already bought the ring, haven’t you?”
“Maybe.”
“What if I say no?”
“You won’t.” He rolled over and pressed her back into the bed.
EPILOGUE
Cassidy twisted against the hard, plastic seat of her chair. The chair was sheer torture, and it was ugly. With the amount of money that was endowed at Rice you would think someone would have made a sizable donation for furniture.
At least the ceremony wasn’t being held outside. It was a blessedly cool seventy-five degrees in the auditorium. Good thing because the robes and the doctoral stole she wore didn’t allow for ventilation.
A P.H.D. doesn’t sweat.
Her cap slid down one side of her hair, and she pushed it back.
There were only twenty students receiving a doctorate today. Not many. But between the uncomfortable chair and the heavy garments, it seemed to take forever until they called her name. Well, it seemed like forever. She was the last graduate student called. That’s what happens when you drop to the bottom of the alphabet.
“Dr. Cassidy Davidson Vega.”
A smile broke across her face as the thrill of finally achieving her dream sank in. She heard a loud whistle and a wild round of applause along with a burst of Spanish. Alex was clapping wildly. It was her brother-in-law, Luis, who was whistling. Carmen, Alex’s sister, another genetically blessed Vega, was blowing Cassidy kisses.
Alex mouthed ‘I love you’ and clapped harder.
Cassidy stood and moved confidently towards the podium. She wouldn’t trip. She was wearing flats.
Her husband insisted.
