I took a long drink of the purple Kavius wine. The alcohol burned the back of my throat and made my tongue tingle, but I was getting a taste for it.
From across the room, I noticed Valletta was not drinking. Maybe Mesilla wasn’t the only one looking a little stony-faced this evening.
While the party continued, the admiral sank down into a seat beside me. “Have you thought about what you’re going to do next?” she asked.
She spoke quietly so Draylan couldn’t overhear our conversation.
“Not really. I thought I’d talk it over with the others,” I said, nodding in the direction of Trella and Kira.
The admiral nodded slowly. “Your magic impressed me today. I have to admit it scared me a little as well.”
I could understand that. It shocked me too.
“But we could do with a mage like you in the resistance. I know we didn’t get off to the best start, Tomas, but our cause is a noble one.”
I stared down at my half-empty goblet of wine.
The admiral leaned a little closer. “We could help you track down Zarak, and you could work with us at the same time. A beneficial relationship for us both.”
I looked up at her sharply.
She smiled. “Are you in?”
I hesitated. I could feel the weight of Valletta’s gaze on me. The short man was easy to read. He wanted me to turn my back on thoughts of revenge. He wanted me to be a better person, to let go of the negative energy.
I knew all that, but I remembered the look in Zarak’s eyes when he’d stabbed me, and the faint smile on his lips when he turned away, leaving me to die.
My grip tightened on my goblet, and I clenched my teeth.
Then I turned to the admiral and raised my glass. “I’m in.”
Author’s note
A huge thank you for reading! If you have a moment to leave a review, I would be very grateful. It doesn’t need to be more than a line or two to say you read and enjoyed it, and it makes a huge difference.
I hope you enjoyed the continuation of Tomas’s adventures in book three of the Forbidden Spacemage Series.
