Isara stepped out of the bedroom in her small cabin to find fat raindrops pelting the living room window. Water cascaded over the glass in sheets, making it nearly impossible to see the thick forest of pine trees beyond.
A crackling fire filled the room with the scent of wood smoke and offered enough warmth to drive away the chill such a deluge would inevitably bring. This far north, even late spring could bring unpleasant weather.
Two chairs were positioned side by side at the window with their backs to her, and somehow, she knew that one was occupied. The half-finished glass of water on the table between them was one clue, but really, she could have sensed this man's presence even if she were deaf and blind.
Isara wrinkled her nose, then shook her head in irritation. “Come to check on me?” she asked, striding across the room. “You should know I have the situation well in hand. The Inzari will be pleased.”
As she rounded his chair, she found Grecken Slade sitting with a blank expression on his face, staring vacantly through the window. The man looked just as handsome as he always did with smooth skin, tilted eyes and black hair that fell past the small of his back. “I am aware of your progress.”
“And your assessment?”
A cruel, mocking smile was Slade's response, but he never took his eyes off the storm outside. “You've done surprisingly well with limited resources,” he said. “I admit, the incident in the park was…quite inspired.”
“You wanted discord.”
“I did indeed.”
Isara stood next to his chair with arms folded, unable to find the will to look up. Of course, the heat in her face wasn't helping matters. “The seed has been planted,” she said, defending herself despite the fact that Slade had offered praise. “It won't be long before everyone is wondering if they can trust the Justice Keepers.”
“Yes.”
“Which begs the question…What happens next?”
Grecken Slade sat with his elbows on the armrests of his chair, peering through steepled fingers at the window. “Why, I should think that would be obvious,” he replied. “We begin the next phase of our plan.”
