My dad and I had similar talents—magitek with a minor talent for electromancy. His was stronger than mine.

He got a faraway look on his face, then started to speak. His voice filled the room, and I could hear echoes of it from outside.

“Lady Findlay-Moncrieff is dead,” he announced. “Cease fire, and throw down your weapons. Anyone who surrenders will be treated honorably. Anyone who continues to fight will be executed. I repeat, Lady Findlay-Moncrieff is dead. There is no one to pay you. This war is over.”

He grinned at me. “Magitek intercom and loudspeaker system. George had me put it in so he could pipe music for Denise’s parties. Now, if you could assist me in enforcing that? Help me disable those lightning projectors?”

He walked to the east side of the room, and I went to the west. Reaching out with my magik, I disabled the closest rooftop lightning projector, then proceeded to the next. Very shortly, the sounds of fighting died down.

The storm continued. I knew it would take a while for it to wind down. But without Courtney’s magik, it would move off and dissipate.

  Chapter 50

She always wanted to be a princess, and on her wedding day, she definitely looked like one. I had seen bigger weddings, fancier weddings, but Kirsten was the most beautiful bride I’d ever seen. And she was radiant.

Mychal simply stumbled his way through the day looking gobsmacked.

Aileen couldn’t stop crying, but she was smiling the whole time. Blair looked so incredibly uncomfortable that I took pity on him and took him around back and smoked a joint with him. After that, he just leaned against a wall with a bemused expression on his face and drank.

There had been a minor dustup about Kirsten’s dress. It took Olivia stepping in to tell her that fire-engine-red wedding dresses ‘are just not acceptable.’ My mom wasn’t any help, as she watched the whole thing laughing so hard tears ran down her face.

I did get some input on the bridesmaids’ dresses. Mary Sue was pissed, but I out-voted her. No pink.

Aleks was more familiar with the Novak estate than I was, so he showed me around a bit. I also got to meet his parents and his uncle. They seemed like very nice people, and they invited me to the Family estate in Munich.

“Wow, you got to meet the parents!” Kirsten said when we had a moment together. “He must be getting serious.”

“Bah. I’m the maid of honor. I’ve met more damned people today than I can count, let alone remember their names.”

She laughed. “Admit it, you wouldn’t say no if he asked you.”

I shook my head. “I’m gonna miss you.”

“We won’t be gone for long, and I’m still going to have my shop two blocks from Police Headquarters. You’re still gonna be stuck with me.”

Soon afterwards, the bride and the groom took their leave, heading for their three-month honeymoon tour of Europe.

They looked so happy that it brought a tear to my eye. And in that moment, when I used my hankey to wipe it away, Kirsten struck. Something soft hit me in the face. I grabbed it in self-defense and found myself staring at her bouquet.

Looking up, I found her looking directly at me, a mischievous grin on her face. She stuck out her tongue, then she turned, took Mychal’s hand, and they ran together toward their limousine.

I looked at the bouquet again, not knowing what to do with the damned thing. Aleks came up behind me—I knew it was him by his smell—slipped his arms around my waist, and nuzzled my hair.

“Danica James, will you marry me?” he whispered.

I turned around in his arms. “Are you crazy?”

He smiled. “So, is that a yes?”

I studied his face, then kissed him. “It’s a maybe. I’ll give you some time to sober up, and then we’ll talk about it.”
