That woman was Zafrina, her second in command. Sky tended to always come to the hut after her shifts to decompress. No other Knights knew the location, and Sky preferred it that way. She had a giant mansion in their realm that she welcomed all their Knights too, but this, this was their sanctuary.
Zafrina was Sky’s balance in every way. Where she was short-tempered, Z was mellow. When Sky wanted to shout her fury, Z would remain mute. And when Sky wanted to create chaos, well Z was always willing to join in on the mayhem, if it was warranted. However, the occasion, the two fit. And she wouldn’t have made it this far in her immortality without the women before her.
Sky took a minute to gaze at her friend, basking in the warmth that spread through her body. She envied the power Z had to create a tranquil atmosphere. If only Sky had the ability to develop her serenity instantly. Maybe she wouldn’t have come close to ripping Sia’s head off.
Sky took a few calculated breaths. She watched Z sip her tea, allowing Sky to gather her thoughts. Zafrina was stunning as always. Her long ebony hair usually kept braided in a low bun, now flowing loosely over her shoulders. The harpy traded in her fighting gear, in favor of a soft crème nightgown. A shade that flattered Z’s silk mocha skin. Her eyes were a deep hazel that crackled in the burning fire. High cheekbones that framed her oval face perfectly. Z’s features gave of an aura that read of the Egyptian queen she used to be. The female was built to be loved, worship, and their Knights never failed in their praise.
Every Knight got along with Z famously — even the hardheaded, disobedient ones such as Kat. Z was the only one Kat allowed to command her, with little to no complaints. Z was probably the only reason Kat made it this far.
Recharged, Sky stepped into the seating area and plopped down on an accent chair opposite of her friend. The whole-time Z never looked up from her book. Yet the harpy felt the moment Sky regained clarity because she spoke.
“Feeling better?” Zafrina inquired with her head down. Her eyes speed-reading the pages in front of her.
“Yes,” was Sky’s one-word response.
“Good,” Z followed, flipping the page.
After a few beats of silence, Sky finally gave in. “You’re not going to ask?”
“Do I need to?” Z instantly replied.
Sky brought her hands to her face, bracing her elbows on her knees, “no.”
“Would you like to talk about how they pissed you off this time then?”
“No,” Sky growled through her hands.
Z flipped another page, casually taking another sip of her tea without a care in the world. Waiting. And Sky did not keep her waiting for long. She stood up from the seat and begun to pace. Z closed her book, sitting it gently beside her. Clasping her elegant fingers before her, Z looked towards her, giving Sky her undivided attention.
“Why do they like to defy me, so? It’s like they want me to punish them.” Sky thundered out as she continued to pace in front of the fireplace. “You know Kat didn’t check in again? And this time it was because of a male. A human male. Does she want to get herself killed?! I know things haven’t been ideal for the Knight since that mission, but damn! When will she let that shit go? And don’t get me started on her twin. That harpy’s been drinking herself into an early grave for decades. And the only person capable of saving her dumbass is trying to get her own self KILLED!” Sky screamed in frustration.
Sky stopped her pacing, sitting back down to regain her peace. She was grateful for the healing sensation that washed over her body. The refine energy relaxing her once more.
“Thank you.”
Zafrina nodded before speaking. “Kat will find her way. You must be patient. Give her time and space to choose the right path. Everything will work out; you will see.”
Narrowing her eyes, Sky studied her friend, “and you know this how Z?”
Z shrugged, picking up her book to resume reading.
Z sometimes received premonitions that allowed her to see the future, yet sometimes they weren’t clear. Most of the snapshots Z translated to paper immaculately were somewhat confusing. So they were filed away in her library labeled. The system allowed them to keep track of the visions in case they needed to revisit the image later. Sky trusted Z’s judgment nonetheless, so if she said to give the twins time, she would try.
“I love them,” Sky admitted reluctantly, through hushed words. The leader sulked back in her chair.
Sky didn’t want to feel anything for her Knights. Having emotions for another was a weakness the leader couldn’t afford to pay. Somewhere over the years she became attached. They wiggled their way into her dark heart, and the thought of losing any of them was unbearable.
“I know you do, as do I,” Zafrina responded, flipping a page in her book yet again.
Sky paused and looked towards her partner in war, “I love you too.” Might as well throw that out there.
“Even though you don’t want to?” Z looked up, pausing holding her place in the book.
Replying Sky hung her head in shame, “yes.”
Love was foolish. It served no purpose to their cause to love another. Up till now, Sky always felt free to make sound judgment calls concerning her females. Now everything was encompassed in doubt.
“It’s okay to love my dear friend. You don’t have to make it sound as if you killed my dog.”
“You don’t have a dog,” Sky cocked her head in confusion.
“And you are missing the point. Love doesn’t have to be a weakness. On the contrary, it could turn out to be your greatest strength. You will fight harder to defend those you love. You protect them,” Z paused to look Sky in the eyes, “as I protect you.”
Z resumed reading once again, as Sky sat back in the chair to think. Sky’s phone was buzzing at her hip, but she needed to few more minutes to collect herself. Having Z help her work through her emotions allowed her to see Sia and Kat’s situation more clearly. They were adult females, and Sky needed to stop riding them so hard. She would allow them the time to work through their crap together, without the threat of her wrath.
Regardless of Sky’s personal feelings, the twins were two of the best fighters she had. If the Knights loss either one of them, the Earth would feel their absence. Sky wouldn’t run the risk of losing either one of them. But she would give them time to figure shit out on their own. And if anyone interfered with their journey, well then, at least she’d be able to kill someone.
Chapter ten
The night was shaping out to be pretty damn spectacular. Kat hadn’t been this entertained in years, which turned her on even more. Lucas was beginning to come out of his shell. And Kat was pleased with his playful demeanor.
Backing up, Kat stepped onto the platform where the bed lounged — grabbing Luke’s hand. Kat dragged Luke on top of her as she fell backward onto the luxurious pillow top mattress. Kat delighted in the cradle she made for him between her legs.
Goddess above, it’d been so long since a man touched her with care. Hell Luther, her ex-lover, was all about the turnaround and grab the ankles. No touching, no caressing; just wham, bam, thank you, ma’am. That was one of the many reasons they didn’t work. Kat lived for the anticipation, the allure, the hunger, the passion. Werewolves, the King of wolves, in particular, was all about doggy style. How cliché? But that was only one of the reasons they ended.
Luther was not only a predictable lover, but he was an incredibly dominant male. An overbearing tyrant with an ego that far exceeded her own. Hell, Kat was modest, the bastard was an egotistical, self-centered, asshole, which ultimately led to their downfall. And Kat was better off for it. When a girl wanted to self-destruct, she was better off alone.
Luke ran both hands up her thighs, imploring her to wrap her legs around his waist. She obliged, forcefully pulling her from her destructive past. Kat ran her nails up Luke’s back reveling in the hushed hisses he made by her ear. In return, Luke ran his tongue down Kat’s neck. Mmmm, that glorious body of his was epic. The human w
as all muscle, no body fat. Luke was just one-hundred-eighty-five pounds of magnificence.
Kat was utterly transfixed. She marveled in the feel of him between her legs. But when he started to trial his wet kisses down her body, Kat was forced to focus on her pleasure.
My oh my, did he have a talented tongue — another thing to add to her list of surprises. Luke continued to work his way down her body. The human circled his tongue over her breast. Luke paid equal attention to both, as he nipped and sucked at her nipples. Before the playful seduction became painful, he moved his attention down her stomach. Luke circled his diabolical tongue around Kat’s navel. The sensation caused her to grip the sheets tightly in her hands. Luke, however, didn’t spend long at her belly-button, which Kat was grateful for. The mortal traveled down to the juncture of her thighs. Then Luke proceeded to place feather-like kisses along each side.
Kat usually had more self-control over her body’s movements but, Fuck. The anticipation was killing her. And something told her, lover boy knew it too. Luke knew where to kiss her to make her writhe under his passionate caress. Kat’ back arched off the mattress as he continued licking the entrails of her legs.
Kat was trying hard to focus on the magnitude of his touch. The tremors were sensationally impossible. But she realized it wasn’t just him. Somehow, she’d released a small amount of her electrical current. The energy mixed in well with Luke’s talented tongue. But it caused mild vibrations throughout her body, thus intensifying the sensation.
Kat always kept a tight leash on her powers. Yet the gift turned on her, in the best viable way. The gradual escape of her powers never happened without Kat’s notice. Usually, her gift was only used for more deadly purposes. But this was better. Especially since the escape seemed enteral, which was perfect. But all thoughts of how’s and whys died a glorious death as Luke finally found her pulsating core. She merely threw her head back against the pillow. Then soon as Kat’s fingers connected with Luke’s silky mane, she let go.

The sirens skin was remarkable. It smelled marvelous, like a lavender field at sunrise. Tasted even better. Luke couldn’t comprehend how the vixen smelled this extraordinary. Especially after spending all night in a sweaty dance club, but she did. And he was in heaven for it.
A body like hers, so toned and smooth deserved to be admired, treasured. Luke could’ve stroked her all night. However, during his exploration of her body, Luke could sense her mind wander. He decided to bring her back in the best conceivable way. Luke went straight to the core of her essence. When the femme fatale moaned, hiking her back off the sheets, Luke knew she was back.
The seductress still wore her lace panties, and he loved how wet they were becoming under his mouth. Kissing her through the underwear, wasn’t good enough for him. Even though Luke knew it was driving her crazy by the way she was pulling his hair. Luke had to taste her center without any barriers. Leaning back on his knees, Luke lifted her body, yanking her panties down in one fell swoop.
Lying flat, Luke cupped his arms under his vixen’s thighs, pulling her towards his awaited lips. With zero hesitation, Luke darted in and out of her liquid oasis with his tongue. Luke circled her walls with skilled perfection.
Hearing the temptress moan in ecstasy, had Luke throwing up thanks to his ex-college roommate, a sex therapist. The woman taught him a few things about how to pleasure a woman. Because let’s be honest, who better to show a man how to pleasure a woman, than another woman. And it was made better because it was an act Luke thoroughly enjoyed. Man, Luke felt he could taste her flavorful juices for hours. And still wouldn’t get enough.
Luke continued to draw out the pleasure before it was time to put her out of her blissful misery. With just a few more penetrating thrusts of his tongue, Luke sucked her clit between his teeth. Rapidly licking as he hummed.

Kat saw stars. Like real-life twinkle, twinkle, as Kat came so hard, her back bowed off the bed. She felt her electrical pulse course through her body. So she closed her eyes to keep the blue sparks from shining through like a flashlight.
Kat could do nothing but lay there, panting. She took a moment for her soul to reenter her body. Damn Lukie was good. Once her breathing became even, Kat finally had the strength to pry her eyes open. Then she glanced down. And what do you know? Lukie was sitting back watching her with a deviously handsome grin on his face.
"Well, aren’t you full of surprises," Luke’s smile grew, and so did hers. "I think it’s time to wipe that smug grin right off your face, hmm.”
Sitting up swiftly, Kat grabbed both his arms. She flipped him on his back, then straddled his hips. Kat spun them with a strength and agility that probably would’ve been better kept leased. But when she lifted to pull his boxer brief off, he didn’t seem to notice.
Settling firmly back on his waist, Kat grabbed his member. She had all intentions of impaling herself on his cock. But his next words stayed her motions.
"Wait, wait. We need a condom. Top drawer of the nightstand."
Impatient, Kat came close to telling the mortal that phantoms don’t carry human diseases. But she stopped herself before the words slipped out.
Nodding, Kat scooted off him. She reached the dresser by his bed and grabbed the little gold wrapper. Kat peeled it open with her teeth. Hopping back atop Luke, Kat smoothed the condom on, then smirked down at her lover. Lifting up, Kat gradually guided herself down the tip of his manhood. Until she was fully connected at the base. Kat effectively wiped that grin off his face.
Chapter Eleven
Kat jerked out of sleep, sitting up frantically, looking around. Where the fuck was she? Kat readjusted her eyes to the bright sunlight coming through the windows, trying desperately to collect her thoughts.
Kat glanced over towards the handsome man sleeping soundlessly beside her. All memories of last night’s erotic escapades came crashing back. Kat messed up, big time. Looking out the giant windows towards the sky, Kat groaned. The sun was coming over the horizon. Fuck, fuckity, fuck, fuck, fuck.
Kat looked around for her phone. After a minute, she finally realized her cell was in her jeans pocket. All the way across the room, by the door. Quietly as possible, Kat slipped out. She tried her best not to jostle the mattress and wake Luke.
Tip-toeing across the hard-wood floors, Kat grabbed her phone with care. The last thing she needed was to wake Luke up with a bunch of weapons hitting the floor. The human's face was angelic while he slept, especially without his glasses.
Thinking back on the night, Kat wondered when Luke found time to take them off. Kat got lost in thought, trying to remember. Oh right, my phone. Using her fingerprint, she unlocked her phone, going straight to her message threads. Shit!!! Twenty missed calls, two voicemails, ten text messages — all but one from Sky. Opening up the column from Sky, Kat held her breath while she read.
"Nightly report?"
"Why haven’t you responded?"
"Where are you?"
"You’re starting to piss me off, Thorne."
"You better call me back now, or I will come and find you. And you don’t want me to find you."
Kat shivered, and not in a good way.
"I’m calling in the Knights.”
"This better not be another one of your unauthorized weeks off, or I’m calling your mother."
Ouch, Kat winced, low blow.
"Please, Kat. Enough, I’m worried."
Kat blew out the breath she was holding. The harpy believed her. Sky, Z, and Sia seemed to be the only ones that hadn’t given up on her. And that pissed her off, even more. Kat didn’t need anyone to care. The Knight was perfectly fine on her own. Well maybe not perfect, but damnit she was close. Okay, she wasn’t remotely close, but they didn’t need to know that little detail.
It looked as if she waited a few hours before she sent her final reply. "You have until dawn to report in, or the Knights and I are coming for you."
Kat looked to the sky. She sen
t off a quick reply hoping there was still time before her boss found and killed her. For good this time. Kat may have a death wish, but she rather not die by Sky’s hands. A harpy still had her pride. When she died, it’ll be in battle.
"Yo boss lady relax, allz good,” Kat typed, trying to lighten the mood. “Just had a long night, K. Full report in an hour."
Exiting out of that stressful thread, Kat pulled up the one that had a new message from Sia.
"Hey sis, just wanted to make sure you’re okay. You’re not answering the phone, so I guess that’s means you’re having a great time. Laters, text me when you can."
After sending a reply to her sister, Kat started to get dressed quickly.
How, in the name of everything that’s holy, did Kat fall asleep next to a stranger? And for hours, nonetheless. With all her hunting gear on the other side of the damn room. Shaking my damn head.
The indiscretion was a rookie mistake. And being over two centuries’ in age, Kat was no rookie. The harpy just simply lost her mind. And as a result, Sky was going to kill her. Kat had to hurry up and get out of here, so she could figure it out. Hell, if all else failed she’d plead insanity. It worked for some humans, why not her?
A light shift in the mattress drew her attention back in the direction of the bed. Luke had rolled over onto his stomach. His hair fell a little over his eyes as he continued to sleep. Kat smiled. If the insanity plea didn’t work, tonight would’ve been worth whatever Sky had in store.
The sex between them last night was mind-blowing. Kat wished she could stay for a few more hours. Some good old fashion morning sex would’ve been lovely. But staying with the human during the day was dangerous, not for the Knight, but for him. Kat had too many enemies. She didn’t need to be caught with a human, even if they were inside all day. Luke didn’t deserve that kind of heat.
Shaking herself from the image, Kat finished getting dressed. She then made her way over to the dresser beside the bed. Kat grabbed the pen and notepad and left her lover a note.
