Warden's Fate Page 44

by Tony James Slater

  Was that even a thing?

Meh. Guess I’d better get used to it.

Ella answered straight away, her freckled face appearing on the viewscreen surrounded by a cascade of crimson curls.

“I’m here sweetie,” she said, speakers carrying her voice around the bridge. Tris winced again. He sometimes thought that the women in his life were conspiring to mess with him.

“I think we’re ready for the jump,” he told her.

“Me too,” she said. “Bet I can beat you there!”

“I haven’t even given you the coordinates yet.”

  “So?”

“Ella, it’s a secret, unregistered planet. You don’t know where it is.”

Even over the comm, he heard the mischief in her voice. “That’s what you think.”

She cut the transmission, and Tris let the Vanguard’s command staff take over. Flying the Folly was one thing; this massive cruiser normally ran with a crew in the hundreds.

As the grav-drives activated, and the viewscreens filled with the spectral, colourful static of distorted space, Kyra punched him playfully in the arm. “Hey, so this planet we’re heading for. You do realise it’s yours now, right?”

Tris furrowed his brow. “How’d you figure that?”

“Easy.” She put her fingers up and counted them off. “Sera is gone. Àurea was declared dead nearly twenty years ago, and I can’t see her moving back to Lantian space anytime soon.” She reached out and tapped the pocket with Kreon’s box in it for emphasis. “You’re the heir.”

He raised an eyebrow at her. “What about you?”

“What? Hell no! Like I need a planet. I’ve got enough shit of my own going on.”

“That’s right,” Tris nodded. “You’re royalty, so you probably have a full portfolio.”

Kyra’s hand flew to her mouth, in possibly the most exaggerated impression of shock that anyone had done ever. “Oh, so now you want to know about my past, do you?”

Tris shot her a hurt look. “I’ve always wanted to know about your past!”

“Ha!” she cawed. “Yeah you have! Sadly, I am but a poor maiden from a lowly farming world…”

Tris very pointedly rolled his eyes at her.

Kyra chuckled, and punched him again. “So, now that you own a planet, are you going to re-name it?”

Tris rubbed his arm, and thought about that for a few seconds. “Huh. Kreon’s World…” He shook his head. “You know what? I like it just the way is.”

  THE END

But Tris and Kyra will return in the brand new series:

  Kyra By Night…

Picture the scene: Kreon and Kyra have just touched down on Earth. Their mission: to recruit Tristan to their cause… or failing that, just abduct him. Kreon tells Kyra to stay with the ship, and he heads out into the night.

But does Kyra actually stay there? I mean, would she? Really?

I hope you enjoyed Warden’s Fate. If you did, please consider leaving a short review on Amazon. Even a few words is fine — reviews are like gold dust to small-time writers like me, and can make the difference between my books selling like hot cakes, or them sliding all the way to the bottom of the charts, lonely and unloved. You wouldn’t want that, would you? ;)

If you do fancy leaving a review — in which case, THANK-YOU!!! — just find the book’s page on Amazon, and scroll down to the reviews section at the bottom. Or click here:

  About the Author

Tony James Slater is an unusual combination of science-fiction author and travel-memoir writer.

He is a very, very strange man. He believes himself to be indestructible, despite considerable evidence to the contrary. He is often to be found making strange faces whilst pretending to be attacked by inanimate objects. But perhaps his biggest problem is this: he has a mouth so big he is at risk of swallowing his own head.

It is for this reason (amongst others) that he chooses to spend his life far from mainstream civilisation, tackling ridiculous challenges and subjecting himself to constant danger. He gets hurt quite a lot.
