“Sure.” I stepped out onto the porch, letting out a sigh of relief when the door was closed behind me. It was harder to be in her presence than I wanted to admit. Thank God I had an errand to get me out of the house for a bit.
Thank God I wasn’t here alone.
I lit a cigarette and spent the next few minutes bringing Donovan up to speed. By the time I’d gotten to the butt, I’d answered all his questions and promised to text him with updates, then promised to mean it this time.
I hung up just as a blue Nissan Versa pulled up in front of the house and parked. A tall kid got out of the driver’s seat—well, not a kid since he was driving, but he couldn’t have been older than twenty—then headed around to the trunk.
“Need some help?” I jogged down the steps, figuring I could help him bring in the groceries before I took off to get the keys made.
He seemed taken aback by the offer. “No, I got it.”
Then instead of pulling grocery bags out of the trunk, he pulled out a duffel bag.
“Are you here with the groceries?” Stupid question since he most definitely was not. Visiting a student probably. Here for an overnight and came to the wrong place. It happened now and then in the past too.
He looked nervous. “No, uh. I was looking for—”
I heard the house door open behind me, then Jolie’s voice, bewilderment in her tone. “Tate?”
The kid’s features relaxed. “Ah. There. My mom.”
