  Chapter One

“Sam, you need to come get me.”

  “What is going on?”

Sam could hear it in Audra’s voice. Something was wrong and he was worried. He knew exactly what it was. Audra had married one of the worst men in Eleanor. Everyone knew what sort of man he was, but Audra had been unaware. She had quickly found out though. Sam had tried to tell his sister several times to get away from Ben, but she never had.

  “Is it Ben?”

“Yes. I really need you to come get me. Something bad has happened, and I need to get out of here.”

Sam was already moving towards the door, grabbing the keys as he passed. He didn't bother to put a coat on, even though it was pretty cold outside. He had always known he would get this call and he’d imagined what he would do when he did. Sam already had a plan in place.

  “Are you safe right now?”

“At the moment I am, but I think he's going to get up soon, and I really shouldn’t be here if he does.”

  If?

  “Get up? What happened?”

“He came at me, like he always does, and I had a pan in my hand. I was making dinner. It was more reflex than anything else.”

  “You hit him?”

“Yes. I did. I didn't know what else to do. He came at me, and it just happened.”

“Well, don't feel bad about it, Audra. You did what you had to do. Do you think you killed him?”

“Well, he has been laying there for a couple of minutes. I freaked out a little bit and it took a minute to find the phone.”

“Is there a lot of blood?”

“A little bit, but not like in the movies.”

Sam had started his car and ran his fingers through his ruffled brown hair. Ben Valor was not a man that anybody wanted to mess with. He and his family pretty much ran most of the county. Everything that was done off the books there went through them. He made sure that the police were paid off and Sam knew that going up against somebody like Ben was going to be a problem. He only knew one other person that he could turn to.

“Just stay on the phone with me. Everything is going to be okay. I'm already on my way. Gather anything that you will need and just talk to me until I get there.”

“Just please hurry up and get here fast. I don't want to be here if he wakes up. He is going to be so mad at me.”

“Get anything that you can’t live without, Audra. When I get there, we're going to leave and never come back.”

“You don't know how good that sounds, brother. I have been trying to get away for a while. I had to use his phone because he took mine away. I just want to get out here and never look back.”

Sam stayed on the phone with his sister until he pulled up in front of her house. The place was huge, bought with drug money and money so dirty that it left a trail anywhere it went. Audra was willing to walk away from it all, and he was glad for it. He hated to see his sister in such a way.

When he started to get out, Audra was already opening the door, and she had a bag slung over her shoulder. She looked back one time like she was being chased and got into the car quickly. Sam asked her if everything was okay and she just told him to drive

“He was starting to make noise. I think he is going to wake up.”

“Well, at least you don't have to worry about the cops coming after you for killing him.”

“I think I would welcome the cops, as opposed to Ben coming after me.”

Sam pressed his lips together and looked over at his sister. Audra had several marks on her arms and one dark one across h
er face. Anger ran through him quickly, but he knew better. He would not be able to help if he were dead and that was exactly what would happen if he walked into that house right now. One of them was going to die.

“I don't blame you, sis. Let's get you out of here.”

“We can't go to your place, Sam. He will know that I am there and come get me. Ben is not going to let this go. You should know that.”

Sam shook his head and told her that he did understand. He knew exactly what kind of man she had married, and it wasn't hard to imagine what would happen to him if they were found. Sam just had to make sure that they got away for a while. At least until he could figure out something else for the long term. Right now, he was just worried about getting out of there.

“I know we can’t go to my place. I have somewhere else in mind that I think will work better.”

“Do we really want to bring this kind of drama to somebody else? We could be putting them in danger.”

“Trust me when I say, Audra, this is not going to be a problem for Neil. He is the type of person that won't worry about people like your husband. There are people in this world that can do far worse than Ben can imagine.”

“Well if he is like that, then why do we want to go there?”

“He does it all for good. Trust me. This is the best plan going forward. He’s the only one that is going to be able to get you out of this.”

“I do trust you, Sam. I don't think we really have a choice, so I am right behind you. Just tell me what we're doing.”

“We're going to go see an old friend of mine, and I am sure that Neil will help us.”

  “Why would he help you?”

  “Because he owes me one.”

Sam was never going to tell his sister why. That didn't matter; what did matter was that Neil would be able to help them. He would be able to keep his sister safe, something that he might not be able to do himself. Sam just hoped that after so many years, Neil would be willing to help. He was sure he would.

  He was hoping so anyway.

  Chapter Two

Audra was sore from the encounter with her husband, but she had hope in her heart. Her husband had been keeping her practically captive in their house for a few months now and she was finally free. It had taken a lot to get there, but she did not regret one moment of it. Whatever she had to do to get away. That is what she had told herself again and again.

Now that there were miles between her and Ben, Audra started to wonder what was going to happen next. She asked her brother, but he seemed to not be too worried about it. It was like it was all planned in advance.

“So, what is your friend like?”

“He is cool. You will like him.”

“If he is so great, then why have I never met him before?”

“You haven't met him before, because I haven't seen him in a couple of years. It has been a while, but we were very close when we were in the military together.”

  “He was in the military?”

Sam agreed that he was and Audra still had more questions. She wanted to know whose hands they were going to be putting their lives in. She knew nothing about him, and her brother was not clarifying the issue at all. Audra felt like her brother was holding something back from her, but she didn't know what.

“So, you are sure that I will be safe there?”

  “I am pretty sure.”

“How can you be sure, though, if you haven't seen him in a couple of years?”

“It has been more like six or seven, but trust me, he is that sort of friend. If we ever need each other, we are there. It's just that simple.”

He sounded like he was talking about his brother, instead of his friend. His friend that she had never heard of. Why had she never heard of him before? None of it made too much sense to Audra, and she was more suspicious than ever.

Audra wanted to ask more questions, but she was tired. It was all so emotionally draining that she finally just leaned against the passenger window and tried to clear her mind. It was full of images of what was to come, or at least what she thought was to come. Her husband was going to track her down, she was sure of it, and Audra didn't have to imagine what was going to happen after that. He had made it clear that she was expendable.

“You know it's going to be alright, Audra. I promise.”

“Don't promise anything that you can't keep, Sam. I don't think either one of us can make any promises right now. Do you?”

She waited for him to answer, but he never did; the truth was that he didn't have to. Audra knew how it was all going to turn out. It was going to turn out bad, but at least she would have a little bit of freedom before then. Audra knew that her time was limited. It was a sinking feeling inside of her that didn't go away. Maybe that was just a product of living with Ben for the last few years or maybe it was something else.

Audra fell asleep and didn't wake up again until they were in front of the house. When she looked around, all she could see was Sam, and she had no idea where they were. It felt like they were high up though, the air almost feeling a little bit thinner than she was used to.

  “Where are we?”

“Our destination. I am going to go out first and talk to Neil for a minute, okay? I will be right back. Just stay in the car until he knows about you.”

Audra agreed and wiped the sleep from her eyes. She lifted her black hair back and then pulled it up into a ponytail. There was a moment when Audra almost checked to see what she looked like, but she didn't want to. She could feel the swelling in her face, and most likely, it made her look grotesque. Audra hated the marks on her face more than the others. It was something that she couldn't get away from, couldn’t hide.

Her brother went into the house after knocking and waiting for a moment. Audra waited to see who answered the door; who her brother thought could save her from the head of a crime family. Whoever it was, Audra hoped that at least he would be big. Or know how to shoot or something like that.

She was starting to get a little anxious because Sam was taking forever. It had only been ten minutes when she looked at the clock, but it felt like an eternity. It felt like her whole life was hinged on that very moment and the decision of a man she had never met before.

Audra was finally able to breathe a sigh of relief when she saw Sam coming out of the house. He had a smile on his face that was bigger than anything she had seen before. Whoever this person was, they apparently were still close after all the years apart. Audra had never known anybody that close before. She wondered if she ever would.

Sam waved to her and gestured for her to come in. She was nervous and still had not seen the man that he was talking about. A wave of anxiety came over her, and Audra had to pull herself out of it before she got out of the car. Then she made her way towards the house with a little trepidation in her step.

“Come on, sis. I have someone that I'd like you to meet.”

  Chapter Three

Neil was not sure what to expect when he heard from Sam out of the blue. They had not spoken in so long, and Sam sounded like he was in trouble. Of course, Neil was going to be there for him, even though he had a lot going on at the moment.

When Sam’s sister came through the door, the last thing that Neil expected was such a tiny little raven-haired beauty. She had fiery blue eyes, but she was just so small. From what Sam had told him about the situation, his sister had taken out a crime boss, but Neil was finding it hard to imagine. How could someone so tiny be so tough?

“It's nice to meet you, Audra.”

Neil took her hand into his and almost pulled back with the feeling that it caused. He felt like a shock right through her to him, and there was a moment that their eyes met. Neil didn't know what it meant, but he felt like something happened.

“Nice to meet you, Neil. My brother has told me a little bit about you, and I have to say that he is one of your biggest fans.”

  Neil smiled at Sam.

“Yeah, we have known each other for a while. I heard
about you years ago. You're all grown up now.”

Neil didn't know what to say. Why was he acting so strangely around this woman? He couldn't help, but wonder to himself.

Sam told Neil that he wasn't going to be able to stay. He had some things he had to take care of on his side. Sam had family that he wanted to get out of town as well. He was most worried about Audra, but they had cousins, aunts, and uncles that Ben knew about and would most likely go after. Sam wasn't ready to walk away from everything just yet.
