The idea for this story grew from a very simple question that popped into my mind: what might happen if you stepped into someone else’s nightmare?
A woman and her children have suffered tragic circumstances but live a fairly ordinary life and manage to get through each difficult day. Then, within a very short time, she meets a man who disrupts her determination to stay single, the sort of man she never imagined she could be with, and she begins to live a life beyond anything she had hoped for.
Once I have that initial seed of an idea that interests and excites me, I try and step into the shoes of the main character. For this story, I asked myself: how far would you be willing to believe this wonderful new person who has transformed your life and lit up your future? Would you rally behind them to sort out a long-standing problem that could threaten everything you have?
We’d all react differently, of course, but I do hope you’ve enjoyed reading Darcy’s story in Single.
The book is set in Nottinghamshire, the place I was born and have lived all my life. Local readers should be aware that I sometimes take the liberty of changing street names or geographical details to suit the story.
