Either way, none of it made Avery any happier.

  CHAPTER 7

It had been two weeks since Avery lost her job, her friend and her lover, and she was not in a good place. Her apartment was messy and her plants had all wilted from lack of care. Takeout containers were stashed in her trash and unwashed glasses cluttered her sink. It was 3 pm on a Wednesday afternoon and she was curled up in a t-shirt and leggings on her couch binge-watching The Good Wife. She looked about as good as her apartment did.

She knew she needed to get up and clean her apartment and start looking for work. Maybe join a Pilates class or something. But she just couldn’t be bothered yet. Her heart was still broken. Between Deacon’s disappearance and Selena’s betrayal she never wanted to see another human being again – unless they were carrying her takeout order.

Out of the blue, there was a knock on her door. Avery frowned, sitting up slightly, pushing her uncombed hair off her face. People seriously needed to stop letting randoms off the street into the building. Someone was going to get robbed sooner rather than later.

The knocking came again. “Avery?” a man’s voice asked. “Are you in there?”

Avery froze. She knew that voice.

Hesitatingly, she turned off the TV and made her way to the door. Sliding back the bolt, she opened it. Surely it couldn’t be who she thought it was - could it?

It was. Deacon Wolfe was standing in her hallway, looking as handsome as ever. The only difference between now and the last time she’d seen him was that now he looked worried, concern creasing his forehead.

“What…” Avery trailed off, staring at him. She hadn’t heard from him since he’d gone back to Indonesia.

“Oh God, I’m so glad to see you,” he said, taking a step forward. “Can I come in?”

Still mostly in shock, Avery nodded, stepping back to let him into her apartment. All at once she realized the state it was in. “It’s…I haven’t…it’s pigsty in here,” she said at last. “Jesus, I must look like shit.”

Deacon shook his head. “You look beautiful as always. Just…sadder than usual.”

Avery gave him a half smile. “Yeah, well, things have changed since I last saw you.”

Deacon nodded. “I have a lot to apologize for,” he said. “When I left you I thought everything was okay so I didn’t text right away. It was chaos when I got back – I was running back and forth all week and I put you on the back burner. I see now that that was a mistake.” He looked down at Avery, one hand coming up to touch her face. He hesitated, as if asking permission, then brushed her hair back, stroking her cheek with his thumb. “I’ve missed you so much. I had no idea you’d lost your job. This is all my fault.”

Avery looked up at him. “Did you proposition Selena?” she asked bluntly.

  “I…what? Who?”

“Selena. The other concierge at Crosby Street.”

“Oh, the blonde one? No,” he shook his head. “Not at all. I…I was – I am – mad about you, Avery. Why?”

“She said you did,” Avery replied. “But I just wanted to make sure she was lying. She’s the one who cost me my job too. Not you. She filmed us when we went to Doppelganger the second time.”

Deacon gaped at her. “Really? She did that to you? Oh my God, Avery, I’m so sorry.”

Avery nodded. “I thought I’d lost you, her, and my job all in the same day.”

“Christ, I’m such a complete idiot,” said Deacon. “I should have texted the minute I landed. I should never have just left you like that. I’m so sorry, Avery. I only just found out now, when I called the hotel. Janet told me where I could get a hold of you.”

  “Janice,” Avery corrected him.

  “Janice?”

“The nice woman at the front desk. Her name is Janice.”

“Oh. Sorry. Janice. Anyway. I flew back. I was hoping to surprise you. Take you out for a big night to try to make up for disappearing like that. And she told me you’d been fired. So I convinced her to tell me your address.”

Avery smiled. “Janice always was a romantic at heart.”

“Can you forgive me, Avery?” Deacon asked.

Avery looked up at him. “What do you want from me, Deacon?” she asked.

Deacon blinked. “I want to be with you, Avery. Whatever it takes.”

“Really?” she asked, hope welling in her heart for the first time since she’d lost her job.

“Really,” Deacon stroked her cheek again. “I was even thinking…if you wanted…I have this new boutique hotel opening up in Suzhou, this beautiful city near Shanghai. It’s aimed at Western tourists and I’d really like someone who understands Western needs to run it. And since you’re out of a job, I thought maybe you’d do me a favor and come run it?”

Avery gaped at him. “My own hotel? You want me to run the entire hotel?”

Deacon laughed. “I can’t think of anyone I’d rather have. Plus that means we could be together. If…if that’s what you want.”

Avery beamed at him. With an immense smile, she threw her arms around his neck, burying her face in his chest. “Yes!” she said. “Yes! That’s exactly what I want. Oh, Deacon, you’re amazing.” All of the misery and hopelessness she’d felt over the past few weeks melted away and her heart filled with love. She had missed him so much, and now here he was offering her the job of a lifetime – not to mention the chance to be with him forever.

Deacon kissed her hair and her neck and her shoulders, wrapping his arms tightly around her waist. “Well, I dunno about that. I’ve been pretty shitty the past few weeks. Does this mean I’m forgiven?” he asked.

Avery looked up at him, a huge smile on her face. “A thousand times over,” she said.

Deacon grinned at her and, finally, lowered his face to hers, his lips capturing hers in a passionate kiss filled with all the longing and desperation of the past weeks.

Avery felt desire and love surge through her, her skin tingling with happiness. She buried her fingers in his hair, bringing their faces even closer together, deepening their kiss. Deacon groaned into her mouth, his hands working their way under her t-shirt to massage her back.

They stumbled backward, too wrapped up in each other to pay attention to the furniture. Suddenly, Deacon sat down, bringing Avery with him. His legs had hit the couch and he’d taken his chances. Straddling his lap, Avery could feel his pulsing erection through the soft linen of his pants. She pressed herself into it, its rock hard length rubbing against her clit despite the layers of fabric between them. Deacon moaned again, his hands tangling in her hair as they kissed.

Slowly, Avery drew away, smiling down at Deacon. She loosened his tie and pulled it off, throwing it away. Then she began on his shirt, kissing his chest as she undid the buttons.

“Hey,” he whispered as she moved away from him. “Come back here.”

But she just grinned up at him and kept going until she was kneeling between his legs. Greedily, she undid his belt and fly, gently dragging his pants and underwear down, careful not to snag his penis.

Freed, at last, his erection sprang up, its shaft as long and thick as she remembered. Avery licked her lips.

Taking his cock in one hand, she teased its head with her lips and tongue, swirling along his ridge then moving away. Deacon groaned, clutching at the sofa cushions. Then, without warning, she drew his entire head into her mouth, pumping with her hand as she sucked him.

“Fuck!” Deacon swore, one hand grabbing her hair as she began to take him further into her mouth.

Avery knew she wouldn’t be able to get him all the way in so she made up the distance with her hand, twisting it up and down his cock in time with her mouth. As she worked him, she brought up her free hand and began to lightly fondle his balls. Deacon’s response was a long, low groan as he fought to keep control of himself and not thrust into her mouth. The last thing he wanted to do was choke her.

Taking her hand off his balls, Avery kept
licking and sucking and pumping as she slowly worked her own leggings and underwear off herself. Once she was free of her bottoms she took her mouth off Deacon. Looking him right in the eye, she gave his cock one last, long lick before hopping up and spearing herself on him. They both shouted with pleasure as his erection slid home into her deep, wet pussy.

“Oh fuck,” Deacon swore again, his hands coming up to knead her ass. “God, I’ve missed how good this feels.”

“Me too,” Avery smiled, yanking her t-shirt off and tossing it aside.

Deacon grinned, bringing up one hand to fondle her breasts as she drew herself up and down the hard length of his cock, working herself into a frenzy.

His mouth closed over one of her nipples and Avery moaned with pleasure, leaning into him so that he could suck her while they fucked. The new angle made his cock rub against her pussy walls in a way that sent lights flashing before her eyes. “Oh Go-od,” Avery screamed as her body began to quiver with her orgasm.

Deacon smiled, raising his hips to thrust deeper into her as she came, making her screams grow louder. He loved the feel of her tits crushed against his chest and he slapped her ass softly to egg her on just a little longer. Her body gave one last shudder of ecstasy and, with a dopey smile, she grew still.

  “That was nice,” she said.

“I bet,” he replied. “Wanna do it again?” He gripped her ass in both hands, guiding her up and down his cock as he began to thrust into her, his own ass clenching from the strain.

Avery moaned long and loud. She grabbed him by the shoulders, arching her body back as he pumped into her. Her breasts bounced wildly up and down as their bodies pounded against each other, his cock driving deeper and deeper into her tight pussy, stroking her every nerve, and setting her entire body alight. Her ass slapped against his balls as he brought her down hard against him and he grunted with the effort of fucking her.

Avery couldn’t believe it as she felt another orgasm beginning to build so soon after the last. But she wasn’t about to complain. Her pussy tightened around his cock and she swore as she felt the orgasm burst over him. “Fuck,” she gasped, “oh fuck, fuck, fuck me.”

Deacon groaned, feeling her juices flowing over his cock and buried himself as deeply as he could into her slick pussy, his own orgasm charging through him as she spasmed around him.

Their chests heaving, Deacon and Avery collapsed backward onto the couch, wrapped in each other’s arms.

“Oh my God,” Avery whimpered. “That was incredible.”

Deacon laughed breathlessly. “Think about how even more incredible it will be in China,” he said.

Avery smiled down at him, propping her chin on her elbow. “I feel like I’ve known you forever,” she said.

Deacon smiled at her, wiping a sweaty tangle of hair off her face. “Well, if all goes to plan, you will.”

Avery bit her lip. “I can’t wait to start our new life together,” she said, cuddling into his shoulder. “This is like a dream come true.”

“For me too,” he said, kissing the top of her hair. “I’m the luckiest man I know.”

They sat there in happy silence for a moment until Avery stood up. “Though, maybe we should go shower. I feel like I should start the next chapter of my life not smelling like a hobo.”

Deacon laughed. “Fair point. Let’s go.”

  And so they did.
