We stood in awe watching the gap between us close. Duchess ran toward them and then with her wand she yelled something that made her mount up on wings like an eagle and she fly above the ring of darkness toward Drisdol. She was shouting at him with anger. He tried to calm her but to no avail, soon they were fighting like two winged warriors. With this distraction, the armies approached.
The iron mites kept them at bay while we began preparing for spell. Biju opened the book and we brought Barry’s sister forward. We made sure the crowd of witnesses were standing by, there were about twenty-five students and Katherine standing to the left and five or six werewolves cheering us on as we read.
Akela, Natira, Lucy and I held hands and stood behind Barry and his sister. Kenneth helped Biju hold he book as she recited the spell.
We walked closer and closer to the ring of darkness as Biju read, the crowds cheered, and others stood witness. We could feel the power of the darkness getting stronger as we read. Was anything happening?
Outside the ring of darkness, the armies of both sides stood watching and waiting, they knew that they could not get past the ring of darkness and we could not get out unless the spell was broken. A small group of prayer warriors who believed we were evil were chanting and praying and holding their hands out toward us and their bibles on their chests. Biju read the spell twice, but nothing happened. The iron mites continued to march, dragging many bodies as they walked. The faces of those bodies could be seen clearly, they were mine, Biju’s, Duchess, Kenneth, Akela, Natira, Katherine, even Drisdol.
“Nothing’s happening!” Biju yelled at us. The battle in the sky waged between Duchess and Drisdol. At his urging, the ring of darkness started to close in. As they moved closer, we realized that we would soon be upon each other. As they moved turbines started to fall, causing people to scream and scatter as far as they could out of the way. Small fires were everywhere.
We were defeated. We stood watching them battle in the sky, then Drisdol flew over us and sprayed his fire down upon us too, but Natira was able to throw an invisible shielding net over us that kept us from burning. We watched the fire burn overhead, as if it were floating in midair.
As Lucy looked up at the dragon, she had a revelation. HE would never do this. Only someone very dark. The shadows that had came to her at night were present, they crept throughout the ring of darkness, whispering taunting, calling their souls. She ran over to Biju and took the book, thumbing through it in search of something that explained the prophesies she remembered.
“I remember learning about the prophesies, that there would be a great war in Armageddon, and that the dragon would be present. There would be mountains and armies that would come from the valleys,”
“Why didn’t you tell us this earlier, Lucy this may be the answer we need,” I said.
“I had no idea. I’m- I’ve been exiled. I’m a dark angel. I am not qualified that know this.”
Barry interceded, “So can I take her home, my mom will kill me if something happens to her?”
“Yes, please,” Lucy said.
I looked at Lucy, she had been battling this war between good and evil for a long time. She loved HIM, whose name she did not dare say, why wouldn’t she say it? I wondered.
The ring of darkness moved closer to us, it pushed at us and the people started to fall to their death. “We have to do something!” I yelled.
“What?” Lucy looked around her, she watched the innocent people falling to their death. cloud of witnesses. Intercessors. People continued to fell on her left and right on both sides of the ring. When Barry’s little sister fell, Lucy ran to her side.
“Lucy! You must do something, now! I can’t lose my sister!”
Lucy lifted her eyes up to the hills in the distance. She needed help!
He is not there Lucy; she heard the voice coming from somewhere around her. He is inside you. She looked around and saw no one.
I looked at Lucy, she looked at me through tear filled eyes, she had heard his voice again. She walked forward; unafraid she entered the shadow of darkness. As she walked into the ring a small light could be seen inside her heart. The light grew as she approached the ring of darkness, soon the iron mites themselves became light and they flew into the sky and the entire sky became light. The light covered Drisdol and Duchess. The dragon began to fall from the sky but before it hit the ground it became a man; it became Drisdol again.
The light flew through the crowds of people and the small group of people who held bibles and prayed disappeared with the light and the light entered the sky, all darkness was gone. There was a loud crashing sound in the distance, and we all looked toward the mountains. The four mountains of Jezerel shook and were made low, while the valley was exalted.
Everything was quiet. Harmagito was littered with the spoils of war. Some cried over those who were dead, while others rejoiced for those who lived. The battle had left a bittersweet victory on the battlefield.
Duchess lay on the ground nearby; I ran to help her. She was alive, but badly wounded. The armies captured Drisdol and he was sentenced to live out his days on the island he created for detention, without access to any superpowers.
Two days later we left Desert Academy where Duchess had assumed the position as head Council. Together, we watched Drisdol on the island, running from a swarm of angry bees. Turns out, that was where he’d sent the other council members, and where they perished. Biju and Katherine would be promoted to the DOD Agency. They would be the youngest agents in history.
Me. I had a full agenda. First, we needed to stop in Nevada, a top-secret mission to retrieve something that would help Natira contact home. Then, we’d find Akela’s father so that she could ask him a few questions. Finally, we would be off to India, where Waverly would be waiting to help us find the Secrets of the Damned which would lead us to our mothers.
