I carried Amara up the stairs to the second floor first because she’d lost all her strength. Then, I had to go back for Red. He was still completely disoriented, and I held most of his weight. He was really heavy for a vampire, but somehow, I managed to practically throw him on my couch. Amara was already fast asleep in my guest bedroom.
I needed to sleep, too, but first, I had to get Red out of his burned shirt and clean his wound. I had no idea how I was still standing, considering everything that had happened, but when I was done, and I looked at his face, his cheeks hollowed and his skin practically grey, I knew I had one more thing left to do. I’d considered myself pretty smart once upon a time, but now, as I cut the palm of my hand with a kitchen knife and watched my blood drip into a glass, my wolf argued that I was just as stupid as everybody else seemed to think I was—mainly Haworth and my sister. But I couldn’t let Red starve to death, could I? Because he wouldn’t die and if he woke up with a thirst, who knew what would happen? I didn’t want to find out.
So I poured my blood into the glass until it was full, and I gave it to him little by little until I was sure that some of the color had returned to his face. The problem was, I couldn’t get up again, now that I’d sat with his head on my lap. I vaguely heard the glass slipping from my fingers and hitting the floor, right before I drifted to sleep.
Tomorrow was going to be a long day. For tonight, I let both myself and my wolf rest.
