  People squeeze themselves into tight situations in order to escape trouble.

  Rynelle and security guard go out to Bananas club, drink Carib and taxi driver, get drunk, talks about Joe when she gets very drunk.

  Joe and Rynelle dive the Bianca C

  falling in love

  deepening desire

  Rynelle talks to mother on phone, mother picks up bounce in her voice, she seems happy. She mentions joe for first time. mother senses she is falling for him. she doesn’t deny it. but is hard for her to admit.

  Chapter Twenty

  Dutty han mek greasy mout

  Work hard and you will eat well and enjoy the fruits of life

  Joe and Rynelle, maybe this time

  go to charity ball - meet there, with driver and hotel receptionist

  long lingering moments, first kiss

  make them both really, really vulnerable

  Chapter Twenty-One

  Hand go, hand come.

  As you give, so shall you receive.

  Joe and Rynelle meet for breakfast after night together at the ball and walking hand in hand on beach, first kiss

  everything now in reach, midpoint of love.

  Chapter Twenty-Two

  If yu want half a bread beg it, if yu want one, buy it yuself

  If you want a job done right, do it yourself

  Everything perfect, Rynelle gets call, her mum is sick, needs to go back to Carriacou.

  Tells driver to give Joe message about going away in hurry.

  Driver in bed with hotel receptionist, doesn’t want to tell Joe in case Joe gets wrong idea that she isn’t interested, then forgets.

  Joe waiting for her to come and meet him for dinner, she doesn’t turn up. Power cut on island, no signal on her phone. Joe thinks she has changed mind.

  Chapter Twenty-Three

  Jackass say 'hill an gully yasso', 'hill and gully desso'

  Life is filled with ups and downs

  inkling of doubt

  Joe still upset about Rynelle not turning up, gets call, weather forecast changed so need to go down to underwater habitat sooner to avoid swell, leaving tonight

  he doesn’t have phone signal underwater and she doesn’t know about his underwater work

  she can’t get through on phone to him, thinks he’s dumped her, she’s mortified

  Chapter Twenty-Four

  La salud es la mayor riqueza

  Health is the greatest wealth.

  Joe underwater, focused on task, talks to friends, just wants to get over her. wouldn’t have worked anyway. retreat, retreat.

  she wouldn’t have stood him up if she liked him, doesn’t want to get hurt, risk his career. needs to stay focused on job

  Rynelle is in Cariacou with her mother, seems to be doing OK for now, but not out of woods yet. thoughts about her mother being dumped and all the hardship she went through to raise her daughter alone. never wants to be crying over a man.

  Chapter Twenty-Five

  Kay koule twompe soley soley men li pa twompe lapil.

  A leaky house can fool the sun, but it can't fool the rain.

  break up.

  Rynelle’s uncle takes her to shell island to cheer her up. mother now back home and on mend.

  go out on fishing boat, plan to get her really drunk on rum, get this boy out of her system. arrive, guy there already drunk.

  Joe and buddy from underwater habitat go to shell island to get away from it all, take his mind of that girl, get him drunk a little.

  they see each other at the bar and ignore each other, even though small place. neither can leave without their respective boat drivers, so have to wait it out.

  both think the other doesn’t love them, because they ignore each other, all a misunderstanding.

  both drunk, both leave on respective boats, I never loved you anyway. What? Never loved you either. Don’t need anybody.

  Uncle calls taxi driver, whose snogging the hotel receptionist, explains that they have a situation, need to do something. Need you to follow Joe and see what he’s up to and where he’s going.

  Receptionist finally tells driver that Joe is an astronaut, living on underwater habitat for NASA. why didn’t you mention it before, letting me think he was a stupid guy. they have a little argument

  Chapter Twenty-Six

  Laugh an cry does live in di same house

  The thing that makes you happy may also hurt you

  fighting for love.

  Joe on boat home with buddy, drunk. You idiot, you clearly love her, why did you let her go. Why didn’t you just tell her that you would be away for a while instead of going quiet on her.

  she stood me up.

  I’m sure there is a perfectly decent explanation, did you call her or ask her why she never came? because she looked devastated back there. she was mad at you for breaking up with her.

  Chapter Twenty-Seven

  Man nu dead, nu call dem duppy

  Don't underestimate people

  Rynelle and Joe both invited to a millionaires boat when he visits island, he does a lot for poverty on the island, helps fund the orphanage and wants to improve standards and health on the island and in the wider world.

  Rynelle and Joe still not speaking to each other, but both can’t keep eyes off each other in their fancy clothes.

  Millionnaire introduces them, after they say they don’t know each other. explains that in a strange way they both have a lot in common, both grime fighters trying to make the world a better place.

  Rynelle discovers that Joe is an astronaut not a tourist, and that he has recently returned from space, and now working underwater on a habitat. she’s mad because he lied to her, but realizes she made a big mistake that there was a reason why his phone was dead and why she didn’t hear from him.

  She’s devastated that she judged him wrongly, and gets jealous when she sees him talking to other women at
the party. Now he’ll think she only likes him because of his job and status. He’s above her station, she’s not good enough for him. He won’t be sticking around.

  Joe still heartbroken, knows she is mad at him for lying, and won’t want him now, especially since he’ll be leaving the island again and off on missions long term. its over. he gets jealous when he sees her talking to other guys at the party.

  contrast between magic and luxury of party and them both being heartbroken.

  Chapter Twenty-Eight

  Unless you're close to someone you don't know the true nature of their problems

  wake up, smell coffee

  Rynelle flies back to Cariacou to see her mum and nan.

  looking out of window of plane at clouds, world looks so different from here, must be even more magical to see it from space.

  been such an idiot, all makes sense now.

  she really does love him and she has lost him. must have had good reason for lying to her.

  taxi driver is at house in Carriacou, she talks to him, he realizes he completely forgot to tell Joe she couldn’t make it. She realizes that Joe must have thought she stood him up. She’s such an idiot.

  Uncle there, asks if he found out the information about Joe, driver did, knows that Joe will be living underwater for the next month now, no way of reaching him.

  Uncle and driver try to think of way of getting message down to underwater habitat - dolphin, fishing line, underwater drone, sound. Rynelle has idea

  Chapter Twenty-Nine

  A no wantin tongue mek cattle can't talk

  it's sometimes wisest to keep one's mouth shut.

  Rynelle has brainwave. risky. Needs to get back to Grenada. takes ferry as can’t dive then fly and she’s just been doing litter collection underwater.

  goes to see english couple at dive shop, begs for them to help her. they are worried, could lose job. Have rough coordinates for habitat, but not hundred percent certain and don’t know the depths for diving.

  but they take boat out, use fishing echo to locate habitat, kit her up and dive down with her. not sure how much air she has left, can’t stay down for much longer. sharks swimming around.

  spots housing, swims to window, Joe is inside writing notes at table by his bunk, concentrating and not looking out of window. But she sees him, makes him out. shark is still swimming around her curious.

  she can’t exactly bang on window to get his attention, he looks up just as she swims out of sight away from shark. he looks down again, and eventually he sees her, but gets a fright as not expecting anyone. knows it is her instantly for her bright pink suit and her large size.

  he could lose his job, top secret, how did she track him down, why is she here? she waves at him through window. he waves back still confused. She tries to sign that she loves him, but he doesn’t get it. he gestures what? she thinks he is turning her down. he points at shark swimming behind her, she thinks he is sending her away. so he gestures no.

  she looks at her air and realizes she needs to get going, she can’t stay down much longer. He realizes she is low on air, and decides to break all the rules, even though he could lose his job. on a whim he decides to blow his career for her. he tries to signal to her to swim along to the back and to come up underneath. But she doesn’t understand. In the end he writes on his notebook…come on in, the air is lovely in here. go round the back.

  ah, ok, she gives him the thumb and finger gesture and swims off to find the entrance.

  She comes up underneath the habitat and he goes down to the entrance to meet her, she surfaces and he helps her up steps and into the room. the shark is still swimming below her curious. he is still holding her hand as he takes out her regulator and she pulls off her mask, he pushes her hair out of her eyes and they kiss.

  the English guy diver surfaces in the pool with the shark still swimming below, and says sorry, didn’t mean to interrupt, don’t mind me. whistles to self as he pulls himself up the steps and takes off his mask and regulator. feeling very awkward. I’d give you some privacy but I need my air for the return journey.

  both pretend the english guy isn’t there, tell him to shush so they can enjoy the moment.

  I said I love you.

  Chapter Thirty

  A crab never forget he hole

  There's no place like home.

  Rynelle at Grenada airport, waiting for Joe to arrive. Joe coming through customs, the young guy stops him and checks his bag - full of bras, tries to stop him to search, but older guy stops him. Joe a little embarrassed. She kisses Joe and they walk out of the airport hand in hand. Taxi for Mr and Mrs, is the taxi driver, he takes them to the hotel.

  How was your mission?

  Rynelle jokes that they’ll have to work on his physique, he needs fattening up after all that space food. He’s back in his sun hat, lotion, and long socks, looking like a tourist.

  They’ve booked into the hotel for a few days together. Joe’s bought a load of bras, his suitcase is full of them and nothing else. Did you get them?

  They drop off their things at the hotel, and Joe grabs the case of bras, and they jump back in the cab and head to the orphanage, he donates the bras to the teens.

  Rynelle so happy, it will make a huge difference to the girls and to their confidence, thank you.

  Oh, I nearly forgot, I got a gift for you too! He pulls out a huge textbook of public health diseases and tickets to a conference for them both. Note inside ‘to my partner in grime’. first edition, just come out, all the latest research.

  joking with the customs guys, the young guy gives a student grief about their laptop, has to take it apart and charge them tax.

  About the Author

  Sarah Jane Weldon is a British author, actress, and founder of Oceans Project, a UK registered environmental and STEM education charity for young people aged 5-25 who are denied access to education because of gender, poverty, war, or disability. She is a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society in London, and a member of the Explorer’s Club in New York. Sarah regularly speaks in schools through School Speakers (www.schoolspeakers.co.uk) and in her voluntary roles as STEM Ambassador, mentor, and Microsoft Innovative Educator. She connects with schools around the world through Skype in the Classroom, promoting STEM careers in the film industry and in publishing.

  As well as working on film and television programmes, and writing full time, Sarah is a keen ice swimmer, and is currently training for a swim in Antarctica in 2019 and to represent Great Britain at the International Ice Swimming Championships in 2020. She spends her free time hanging out with her three cats Ozzy, Artemis, and Esa, and her Italian Greyhound Isla.

  Sarah’s books and paid talks in schools help to generate funds for her charity Oceans Project, which was started in 2010 whilst Sarah was working for the Ministry of Education and Science in the former Soviet Republic of Georgia with internally displaced and refugee children.

  She originally trained as a Developmental Cognitive Neuropsychologist before attending medical school and pursuing a 17 year career in the NHS, Social Services, and Royal Navy in England and overseas. Her adventures and medical research have taken her to the Amazon Jungle to study medicinal plants, to the deserts of Jordan, to Tamil Nadu to investigate the impacts of maternal and child health in urban and rural slums, and to Grenada in the West Indies to work in Public Health Medicine.

  Whilst working in India, Sarah developed Guillain Barre as a result of a routine rabies vaccination and spent the next 18 months recovering from paralysis and a badly behaved immune system. The experience of illness resulted in a complete change in attit
ude towards work and life, and led to her saying yes to more experiences, rather than worrying about the future.
