I’ve been working with my old trainer from Chicago – over Zoom. One of the strange benefits of a very strange year. Laura was my favorite trainer I’ve ever run into because she bothered to research physical hindrances I had with credible sources and came up with creative solutions. They were challenging without being dangerous and lead to progress. Never had anyone before or since tailor something to me that much and so effectively. Also, she’s got a wicked sense of humor, which is a big plus.
It turns out Laura has added a new element of mindfulness around exercise. I’ve been practicing mindfulness around food for a couple of years now and it’s changed the way I eat in ways I didn’t think were possible. Basically, the short version is that I became more aware of whether I liked what I was eating or not (you’d think that would be obvious but turns out, nope) and whether I was hungry or full.
I wondered when I started that journey just how much it could change decades old habits. Turns out, it could change them to the point where I can actually eat just one. And I quit doing the old seesaw of eating perfectly or throwing caution to the wind.
How do you do all that with exercise? When we started, I had no clue.
I’m kind of all or nothing with exercise too and generally, I don’t like it most of the time. There are aspects of it I like and certain exercises I like more, but how do I get to mindfulness? (Laura likes to say there are certain exercises I dislike less. Semantics.)
Some of my instructions have been to use a short meditation before I start working out. To take an approach of building at a moderate pace to something. To make up a list of ways to blow off steam – the naughty list – so I already know what I’d like to do on days that running seems like too much. (Actually build in that there will be those days and be ready, instead of acting like maybe this time that won’t happen). And to make a list of the exercises I like – or dislike less till there are sixty or more for me to choose from.
Mind blown. So obvious but I never saw any of this before. Makes me think that there’s a chance I could learn to incorporate regular exercise in my life without long stretches of doing nothing but walking the dog. I’ll let you know. More adventures to follow.

Thank you for allowing me to work in a profession that feeds my need to be creative. That is to you the reader, and companies such as Amazon (and others such as Apple, Google, Kobo, Barnes & Noble etc.) which have created the distribution methods we indie publishers use today.
Without readers such as yourself willing to take a chance, I wouldn’t have the honor to chat (even in the back of the book) with thousands of people.
So, I just got off the phone and did something I’ve NEVER done before. I reached out to Martha and asked her to add to her author notes.
I had to explain that mindfulness (the concept) is something my brain doesn’t understand (nor the corollary be-in-the-moment.)
I heard the term hundreds of times, but never have I had someone explain what the @#%@# it meant in a way I could grasp.
And Martha did it.
But, I couldn’t follow all of her comments without trying two or three times to unpack her thoughts. So, I reached out and asked if she would EXPAND her author notes.
You know, to author block me because she needs my help to accomplish that little feat (she does not.)
I appreciate her explanation for a concept I am going to be able to use. I’m 52 years old. Maybe I’ve got 10 years, maybe I’ve got another 50 years (my grandmother was 100 when she passed) but I now understand when someone tells me to be in the moment.
Don’t even ask what I said to those people in my head after about the 10th time. Even Bethany Anne might be impressed with the purity of the cursing.
Since I didn’t say anything out loud, I nodded my head politely and still went away confused. So, if you haven’t read Martha’s author comments in this book (and don’t understand ‘mindfulness’) go back and give it a read.
It’s pretty freaking useful as a core tool to use to help you make your life better.
I’m looking forward to another chance to talk in the next book!
