The Invasion Page 9

by Katrina Kahler

The first day of school came and I wore the red shoes that Wendi and Patti helped me to buy. The high heels really weren’t suitable, but I figured I could just wear them for the first day. It would make things easier for me with the two girls. If not actual friends, we could at least be people who tolerated each other.

While standing at my locker talking to Krista and Tim about my summer, I saw Patti and Wendi walking towards me. I held my breath, waiting to see what they’d say.

  “Nice shoes!” Wendi said.

“Yeah, there’s hope for you yet!” Patti said.

“Thanks, girls,” I said. Yep, maybe this year would be more normal.

I noticed a very slim, brown-haired girl wearing sunglasses walking toward me. She walked right up to me and began speaking. “Hi, Lia, I’m Val!” she said, very matter of fact. “I’m new here.”

“Nice to meet you!” I said.

Val snapped her fingers. Everybody else disappeared.

“We need to talk!” Val told me.

It suddenly didn’t look like this year would be any more normal than the last.

  The end for now…
