"It's my favorite," admitted Dax, her smile broad as she looked on. "She sounds a lot like Linda Perry."
"She does. C'mon." I patted her arms and sat up. "Dance with me."
"What—I—er."
I laughed, grabbing her hands to tug her up as I stood. "C'mon, nineties girl, make me happy."
Dax chuckled, and rose to join me. I pulled her to me, our stomachs colliding as I draped my arms over her shoulders. She held my waist as we swayed together. A few other folks danced similarly. Jake took his lighter from his pocket, and held it in the air with the flame flickering in the breeze. Macie countered and held up her half-eaten corndog.
I kissed my girlfriend, whose bright emerald eyes sparkled with life and laughter, eons away from where they were at our beginning. Dax's fingers dug into my hips as we moved together, in perfect rhythm, without a care in the world about who saw us or what they thought, because in this town, everyone celebrated us. It took me ages to recognize it. In accepting that, I'd allowed myself to fall for someone who fell equally for me. Together, we tumbled down the rolling hills of her farm, off docks into icy lakes, and into a mess of bed sheets every night. We'd learned so much about our lives and each other, and for the first time, I felt my age, and ready to accept the responsibilities that came with it.
"I love you, Pig Girl," Dax whispered against my lips as the song broke into the final verse.
"And I love you, Dakota Stocker."
"Will you go to junior prom with me?" She grinned when she asked, letting out a soft chuckle after.
"Yes, Dax." I laughed as heat burned between the two of us. "I will go to prom with you."
"I knew I should've asked you sooner." Her bottom lip found its way between her teeth, and the image of a fifteen-year-old Dax flashed before my eyes.
"You're worth waiting for," I told her. "Now and the next day and the next."
"Right back at you, baby." A soft sigh escaped her lips as she brushed them over mine. "Twenty years isn't that long, after all."
"The next twenty won't be long enough."
"With you, I'm here for it." She pinched my chin between her index finger and thumb, her smile bold and broad. "All of it."
Heat rushed my cheeks, and this time, it was my lip that managed to land between my teeth. I believed her. "Me too."
