by Kelly, Marie
She was a woman who had her shit together; educated, with a good job, her own apartment, and her own car at twenty-six.
After giving me a big, sweet smile, Gena stood up from her knees and walked into the kitchen.
I looked down at the gauze on my side and sighed to myself.
A few minutes later, Gena walked over with a plate of food for me.
“Thanks, ma.”
She handed me the plate, and I immediately dug in.
My eyes went to Gena, who was just sitting on her knees and staring at me. I frowned.
“What’s good?”
Clearly, she had something on her mind, so she might as well spit it out.
“I’ve been thinking, Legion. You’re the only man I’m seeing, and I’m going to assume I’m the only girl in your life, right?” she asked, and I nodded to say that she was.
“Okay, so how about we just be together? I mean, you’re here almost every night. I cook for you, and we have the best sex ever.” She giggled, and her eyes sparkled. “I’m just saying, why not?”
Gena looked down at the carpet and shrugged.
I put my plate down on the table and sat back, looking at her as she played with fluff on the carpet.
After a few seconds, her eyes met with mine. There was hope in her eyes—she wanted to be with me.
“If you knew better, Gena, you wouldn’t love a nigga like me.”
Her eyes widened, and her mouth dropped, but that was the truth. I was too damaged and fucked up to love. I wouldn’t even put my shit on a chick—they didn’t deserve to be with a nigga like me. A nigga who didn’t know how to love, even if it slapped me in the face. I wasn’t stupid. When a woman wanted to settle down, she wanted marriage, a house, and kids.
There was no way in hell that I could bring kids into this world without them coming out fucked up like me. It was something I would never do. Nobody deserved to have a monster for a father or husband.
Looking at Gena, I knew that she could do a whole lot better.
“Legion, don’t say something like that!”
Sighing, I leaned forward and clasped my hands together.
“Do you know where the name Legion comes from?”
Gena looked at me confused before shaking her head no.
“It’s from the bible. There was a man that Jesus found who was possessed by so many demons, and that was the name it gave. That’s me, baby.”
I could see that my response didn’t make sense to her, but it did to me. I picked my name for a reason and it fit. The number of demons that were living inside of me was no joke.
I was scarred and damaged goods. Not good for anything but killing until God finally had enough and took me out. No woman deserved to have me. It was bad enough that I was giving these chicks my dick, but I wouldn’t allow them to give me their heart.
My eyes stayed on Gena as I wondered if she would have a response for what I said. Instead, she crawled toward me, and I sat back.
“Your name doesn’t mean anything to me, Legion. And all I’m asking you to do is at least think about it.”
If only she knew it wasn’t just a name!
Gena’s soft small hands unzipped my pants, and I let her. Once she fished my dick out of my boxers, she wrapped her pouty lips around it, and I closed my eyes then allowed my head to fall back.
As Gena made a good attempt to suck all my problems away, my mind drifted to the chick from earlier. Something about her eyes caused me to have a lapse in judgement. Her eyes and face burned into my subconscious mind as I released my seeds down Gena’s throat. And as my heavy mind started to drift off into sleep, all I thought was that I shouldn’t have bothered.
Only looking out for myself, from now on.
Part II
Dior Alfred
The next morning
“Sorry, ma’am, but can you repeat that, please?” the fat officer said to me for the hundredth time. He was too busy eyeing the plate of donuts in front of him to pay attention to what I had to say.
“I said, there are people dealing drugs outside my grandmother’s building!” I slapped my hands down on the desk, and he finally looked at me.
I backed up a little, just realizing that I had slapped the desk of a police officer, but he was pissing me off. Every damn time I visited my grandmother, I was faced with niggas standing around smoking blunts and making drug transactions. And then there was drug paraphernalia inside the building and all over the damn stairs.
It was like everybody in that building turned a blind eye out of fear, but I wasn’t going to! If no one else complained, then I would. There were other elderly people in that building and young children. What if the elevator was out one day, and a needle stuck my gran as she climbed the stairs, then what? It was something that I wasn’t going to sit back and watch happen, no matter who wanted me to keep my mouth closed.
Leaning over the desk toward me, the officer smirked and licked his lips.
“Are you sure you saw what you thought you saw?” he asked, and I rolled my eyes then pulled out my cell phone.
“Yes!” I said and shoved it into his face.
Two nights ago, after I heard men hanging around outside, I left my grandmother’s apartment to confront them. One guy got all in my face and threatened me, so I returned to the apartment, took my cell out, and recorded them. On the video that I was now playing, it looked like one guy was shaking hands with another, but I knew different! I also snapped a few pictures of the men too, which I showed to the officer.
If they wanted to sell drugs, fine, but why couldn’t they do that shit someplace else?
He looked them over, and I expected him to finally do something about it, but instead, he handed over my cell phone and crossed his arms.
“Listen, lady… What did you say your name was again?”
Huffing, I snapped at him. “My name is Dior Alfred, and I want officers out there tonight to tell them to move on! Why can’t they do that stuff on the streets away from the building?”
The next time I went to visit my grandmother, I didn’t want them out there again.
The officer looked at me, and I could tell by his face that he felt that he had better things to do than talk to me.
I was starting to wish I had gone over to another precinct. This was the closest one to my apartment, and since it was my day off, I decided to do it today.
“Miss Alfred, I’m afraid I cannot arrest people because they were hanging around outside. I didn’t see any violation—”
“Are you serious? Those men were so obviously exchanging drugs! And one of them threatened me the other night!”
“All I saw was a group of friends having a little fun.”
Not wanting to deal with this incompetent man any longer, I asked for a supervisor. My eyes bulged when he pointed to his name tag, showing that he was the supervisor.
“I’m sure if what you said was actually happening, I would have had a few more complaints from the other residents there, don’t you think?” he asked with a smirk on his face. “Furthermore, do you even live there, Miss Alfred?”
Not liking the way he was talking to me, I snatched up my purse and rushed out of there. It was obvious no one cared about the fact that these men were doing illegal activities. I was just worried about my grandmother. She and I were very close because I spent a lot of time with her when I was younger, and my parents worked long hours.
I kept asking her to move out of that damn building, just like my parents were, but she said she was too old to move, and the young thugs didn’t bother her.
So, why did it bother me so much?
Maybe because my little brother died from an overdose five years ago. He got some smoke from one of those men outside the building, and a day later, he was dead. I’ve hated it ever since. I felt that had they not been out there like that, he wouldn’t have gotten any and would still be alive now. He was only sixteen-years-old and shouldn’t have been able to buy anything, but drug dealers didn’t c
are! They only saw the money and not the life.
Feeling defeated, I headed to get some groceries instead.
I rushed to CTown Supermarkets on Hillside Avenue and grabbed a few things for dinner and other needed items.
After I paid for my groceries, I left the store and walked to my car. As soon as I hit the remote to unlock my Dodge, I saw shadows behind me. I turned and was faced with two, tall, thick bodied men who were looking at me with menacing stares.
I felt intimidated by them and stepped back, pressing my back against my car. Neither of them said a word, and I wondered if they were going to attack me or something until a man stepped out of his black vehicle and approached us.
He was a very handsome man, and tall like the other men. We locked eyes, and I could see that this man meant business and was very powerful. He also looked familiar, like I knew him from somewhere, but I couldn’t place where I knew him from.
“I heard you been making some noise about something you don’t know, Miss Alfred,” his smooth, deep voice called out to me, and I was stuck.
I wondered what he could be talking about, but then it hit me. He was one of the men I had recorded that night; he just looked different in the daylight.
After hearing him speak, I realized that he wasn’t one of the corner boys… he owned the corner boys.
“I… I…” I stuttered, unsure how I was going to get out of this one. My blood ran cold when I realized that the cops told him about me reporting him, and that’s why that officer didn’t want to do anything about it.
“Are you going to kill me?” My voice shook, and he smiled, showing a perfect set of teeth. He really was the most beautiful man I had ever seen, despite the fact that he was most definitely going to kill me.
“If I wanted you dead, you wouldn’t be breathing right now,” he said, and I swallowed the lump that threatened to choke the life out of me.
“But as long as you keep your mouth closed, we won’t have any problems. You’re too pretty to have a bullet in your head.”
My jaw dropped when he said that, and I could tell from his eyes that he meant every word he said.
“Cell phone.”
He stuck his hand out, and I reluctantly handed it over with my hands trembling.
I watched as he went into my pictures and deleted every photo and video I had of him with his men while he shook his head.
I wanted to ask how he found me since I had just left the precinct, but I was afraid to know.
“We won’t be having this conversation again. I will be watching you,” he said and dropped my phone back into my hand before walking away without looking back at me.
His two goons glared down at me for a few more seconds before they followed him.
Everything inside was telling me to go to another police precinct and report what just happened, or tell my parents or something like that, but I knew men like this one, and I didn’t want the trouble.
Just as his car sped off, I looked up to see the same cop I had just reporting that man to, and it made sense how he found me so quickly. The cop had followed me!
We maintained eye contact until he disappeared, leaving me shaking where I stood.
I climbed into my car with my body shaking uncontrollably and took my ass home to mind my own business!
Alvaro ‘Wrath’ Ramsey
Later that night
BOOOOM! BOOOM! BOOOOM!
My assault rifle barked as I blew the door off an abandoned townhouse in The Bronx. As soon as that shit went in, a few of my soldiers rushed in right behind me.
After Commission let me know that some motherfuckers were in town trying to take over, it only took me a few days to find out who they were.
My brother Surge was right behind me, and our younger brother, Guns, was behind him.
As soon as I entered, I shot one nigga in his head who was standing by the window, and two others jumped behind the sofa.
Surge was in the back of the house wreaking havoc with his AK47. I looked to my left and Guns was firing at another nigga with a big ass smile on his face. That nigga was too fucking trigger happy!
“I got these two,” he told me about the ones behind the couch, and I nodded as he started firing at them.
I moved toward the only other door that I could see further up on my left, and as soon as I was about to reach for the doorknob, a shot was fired from behind the door and just missed my head. I immediately fired my rifle three times at the door and pressed my body against the wall just in case another shot rang out.
When I didn’t hear anything, I kicked the door open and saw a big, black nigga laying out with two gaping holes in his body. The room was small, with only a dresser and bed inside, so I knew he was the only one inside.
I turned back around, and everything was quiet. All the niggas inside the room were dead, and we started looking around for drugs, money, or anything valuable that they had.
My boy, Tito, walked into the living room dragging a wounded nigga along with him. He kicked him into the middle of the room, and the three of us Ramsey men crowded around him.
I bent down to his level and frowned in disgust.
“Do I know you?” I asked him.
“I don’t know anything!” the wounded nigga said as he coughed.
“What kind of accent is that?” Guns asked.
“Fuck if I know,” I said, looking down at this black, skinny nigga. “How about you tell us what you don’t know?” I kicked him, but he kept his mouth closed.
Surge wandered around the room and started looking at shit while I checked this nigga’s pockets.
“Yo, check this shit out!” Surge yelled at us, and I looked up to see him standing over by the window looking at something on the wall.
Tito nodded to let me know he had the nigga on the floor, and I walked over with Guns to check it out.
On the wall was a poster that had all our fucking pictures on it, our houses, cars, our businesses, our momma, grandmother, details of our routes, and even the bitches I fucked with, including my fucking baby mama.
“Who the fuck are these niggas?” I yelled and swung around to look at my guy on the floor.
I didn’t play about a lot of shit, but my momma, grandmother, and baby mama were definitely not the ones!
Out the corner of my eye, a small table tucked over in the corner with all kinds of documents on it. I walked over and picked some up.
“They’re from fucking Monserrat,” I hollered after finding their passports.
All of us looked at each other in the room. We didn’t know anyone from that country. Even our soldiers looked confused as hell.
“Who sent you, nigga?” I rushed over and pointed my gun in the nigga’s face.
I could feel my anger rising, and it wasn’t a good thing when I got like that.
I got my name because of my temper.
“I don’t know! All I got was a package with money and instructions. Nothing else,” he stammered.
“Well, tell your maker I said, hi,” I said before splitting his face open with four bullets.
Surged opened the door and let Detective Baker inside. He was the Feds but was on our payroll.
“We found these, so see if you can find any information out about them and when they came here. Motherfuckers had pictures of our momma,” I told him and handed over all the documents from the table.
“Will do, Wrath. I got y’all. Now, y’all should go, so I can call my back up. Put these on,” he said and handed each of us an FBI windbreaker, which was needed because I knew my rifle made some damn noise.
“Keep me informed, and I want to know everything, no matter how small of a detail it is,” I said to him before I strolled outside.
Our soldiers were cheesing because they got a hold of the money those niggas were paid to follow us, and I allowed them to keep it.
“Guns, why you always got a damn smile on your face when you’re busting your shit?” one of our boys, Tariq, asked as we all broke out lau
ghing.
“I don’t know. I just love that shit, especially when niggas think they can actually shoot me.” He laughed.
My brother was touched in the fucking head, I swear. When we were kids, this nigga would do all kinds of shit like catching spiders and pulling their legs off one by one. Plus, he was into all those weird ass movies like Human Centipede and Saw. The nigga just wasn’t right in the head. I don’t know where the fuck my parents found his ass!
“Y’all get out of here,” I instructed everyone, and they all started to disappear.
Surge and I dapped our little brother up, and he left too.
“What you think about what we found in there?” Surge asked me after everybody left us alone.
“Shit, just somebody trying to take over.” I shrugged, even though deep down inside, I was hotter than a motherfucker just from the thought of it.
Shit very rarely bothered me because I stayed ready for whatever, but something just didn’t sit right with me. They had way too much information on us like they knew us. Details of our routes, pictures of our mom and shit. Nobody had ever gotten that close before. How the fuck would they even know where to look for us? And then seeing my baby mama did something to me because my daughter was with her, and to get at Brittany would be to get my KeKe too.
I closed my eyes and felt the vein in my neck pulsing, which let me know this shit was going to bring me to my dark side.
After a few seconds, I opened my eyes.
“Don’t worry, Surge, I’m on it,” I said, only because I didn’t want my brother to worry. They looked to me to be the strong one, and I had to.
I would deal with all the stressing.
“What you getting into now?” I asked changing the subject and sparking up a blunt. “We need to get out of here before them peoples come,” I said, referring to the Feds who should be pulling up at any minute.
If they saw us, they would know this wasn’t no police operation but a damn cover up.
