  Chapter 1

  Emme

“Fuck,” I shout as I hit my leg off the revolving door into my building. Everything that could go wrong this morning has gone wrong. I’m running late and I never run late. I am known for being punctual and early, not fucking late.

“Hey, Emme.” Mr. Jenkins, the doorman, smiles as he nods his head at me.

I don’t even have the time to say hello as I see the elevator door open and start to close. I run and just make it inside before it closes tight. I lean my head back against the wall and take some deep breaths. I’m here now so nothing else should go wrong. Thank God.

When I step out of the elevator and walk toward my office, I see the conference room is being used. As I walk past, I see my boss and he waves me in. Shit. What meeting is that? I check my phone for my diary and see that I don’t have anything scheduled. What does he want me in there for?

After putting my stuff in my room, I rush into the conference room. There are five people in the room already. My boss, Peter, and his assistant, Mollie, an attorney from Chance, Spence, and Taylor, a guy who is avidly writing notes, and a man who is drop dead gorgeous and is standing at the front of the room speaking.

As I close the door, Mr. Hottie turns to me and smiles. I think my panties just got wet; he’s that good looking. Then he opens his mouth and says, “Great, you’re here. I take mine black, no sugar, and make it strong.”

It takes me a minute to compose myself. I look at my boss who is shaking his head. He knows what is about to come out of my mouth. “Get your own fucking coffee. I’m not your maid.” I look at Mollie and she stands, trying not to laugh. I’m not going to live this one down. And there was me thinking this day was about to get better.

Mollie takes out her pad and pen and asks, “So, as I’m getting Logan a coffee what would everyone else like?”

Logan looks at me, he doesn’t apologize he just shrugs his shoulders. The arrogant bastard. He’s lucky I don’t grab the cup from Mollie when she comes back with it and dump it over his designer suit. Demanding a coffee off me is a sure way of not getting into my good books.

While Mollie gets everyone’s coffee, I turn to my boss. “So, what’s this impromptu meeting about? Why wasn’t I informed that they were coming in today?” I wave my hand at Logan.

Peter takes a deep breath and looks at me. “They called early this morning and there was a note on your desk.” He grits his teeth and quietly says, “It’s not their fault you’re late. What the hell, Emme?”

I take a seat with a huff. I wish I could go home and start my day all over again. I look up and Logan is watching me with a smirk. I can’t help myself. I sit up straight and the words just tumble out of my mouth. “So, for what do we owe the pleasure of this early morning visit?” I smile sweetly at him.

He smirks again. Then he sits up straight, mirroring my move. “Our client doesn’t want to accept the offer that you’ve so generously made. He thinks that he’s entitled to much more. We agree with him.”

“Are you freaking kidding me? We have offered him a generous sum, when he’s in the wrong, and yet he still wants more.” I move my piece of paper around, trying to calm down. “He doesn’t deserve any more money.” I stand. “Peter, this meeting is over. We need to take it to court; I’m fed up negotiating.”

Peter shakes his head. “Sit down, Emme. Listen to what they have to say and then we can make a decision. You need to calm down and let someone else talk.” I am so angry with Peter right now. Who does he think he is to talk to me like that? I’ve been through a lot in this company to get where I am. No one gets to talk to me like that.

Before I have a chance to say anything else, Mollie walks back in with the coffees. Standing, I walk toward her and grab Logan’s, then I stalk over to him and place it down in front of him. “Here you go, sir,” I say in a sickly sweet voice, making sure I flutter my lashes when I say the word ‘sir’. His eyes perk up and he stares at me.

I’m not sure if he thinks that I am going to throw it over him or if I am going to do a curtsey. Instead I turn around, grab my coffee, and walk to the door. “When your client is prepared to discuss something sensible, please let me know. I’m going back to my other work.” I slam the door on the way out.

I know I’ll get into trouble with Peter, but I am so angry. I want to go to the local bar and drink frozen margaritas all day.

When I get into my office, I slam the door and I see the piece of paper on my desk informing me of the meeting. Shit, if only I had seen it before I went in there. No, things would not have gone any differently. Logan is still an ass.

I call my friend, Ember because I need to let off some steam. I am so happy when she picks up. “Oh my god, Ember. I’m having such a bad day. I want to kill everyone already and it’s not even eleven o’clock.”

Ember laughs. “What’s wrong, babe? Who rattled your cage this morning?”

“Don’t get me started. Everything went wrong and I was late for work. I’m never late for work. Then when I realized there was a meeting I was supposed to be at some guy had the audacity to ask me to get him some coffee…”

Ember starts to laugh. She can’t control herself.

  “Ember, this is not funny.”

“Yes, it is, babe. Someone asked you for coffee? I bet it wasn’t long before he was wearing it. Am I right?”

“Oh God, Ember. I was so tempted to pour it on his designer trousers, but had to abstain. I did have an argument and walked out of the meeting though. You should have seen the arrogant jerk. He might have been in his designer suit, with his grey silk tie and bright white shirt that matched his white teeth when he smiled, but he was an…”

“Wow, stop right there, Mrs. Trainwreck. Was he hot?”

  “I don’t think you’d call him that, he was…”

  “I think he was
hot, Emme, and you were attracted to him, weren’t you?”

“No, I was not. Ember, he was arrogant. It doesn’t matter what he looks like, sitting there knowing that all the women probably throw themselves at him. He’s a jerk.”

“Oh. You liked him. This is amazing. It’s not very often you’re attracted to anyone. Is there a chance you’d be able to get his number and ask him out for dinner?”

“Are you kidding me? Have you not listened to what I just said? He's an arrogant jerk. Why would I want to ask him out to dinner?”

“Listen, Emme, you need to get laid. Like sooner rather than later. How long hasit been? Two years?”

“Fuck you, Ember. It’s been a year, but I don’t need to get laid to be happy. I’m just in a really shitty mood and he’s made it worse. Can I come over tonight and get hammered? I’ll get Mollie to move my morning appointments if I have any.”

Ember laughs. “Of course, babe. You could have just asked that before you went on your tirade. I tell you what, come over and we’ll get dressed up and go out. I know just the place to help you unwind.”

“I hope it’s somewhere exclusive, Ember. I need to make sure I’m not surrounded by arrogant jerks.”

She laughs. “Don’t worry about that, babe. Club Temptation is definitely exclusive.”

  Chapter 2

  Logan

“Yeah, Ma, I’ll swing by later,” I promise her. It’s been just over a week since I’ve been home and she’s worrying. “Tell Bobby I’ll see him soon.”

She sighs. "He’s going to be so excited. You know how much he loves his little brother.”

I chuckle at her words; there’s nothing little about me. “Younger, Ma, I’m his younger brother. How has he been? Is he liking the new center?”

Bobby is almost thirty and has Down syndrome. Ma and I have tried to let him have as normal life as possible. He’s been in three different day centers but he hasn’t settled into any of them. Ma found a new one and he started last week.

“Yes, he’s made some new friends, I’m pretty sure he’s got a lady friend. He’s mentioned her a few times, but whenever I ask him about her, he ignores me.”

I smile; my brother’s always had a way with the ladies. It’s the Tate way; us Tate men are irresistible to the opposite sex. When we set our sights on someone, we don’t stop until we get them.

“That’s great, Ma. I’ll see if he’ll talk to me about her later.” The door to my left opens and the gorgeous brunette walks out. “Ma, I’ve to go, but I’ll see you later.”

  “Bye baby,” she says softly.

I end the call and move toward the gorgeous Emmeline Jacobs. I can’t help but smirk when I remember the flash of anger that crossed through her eyes when I asked her for a coffee. When she told me to get my own, I was intrigued. The rest of the day, we’ve been working together, trying to figure out a way to come to some sort of compromise for our clients, and I can see that she’s a ball buster. She’s determined, smart, funny, fucking gorgeous, and she takes no shit from anyone.

I fucked up by demanding that she get me coffee. I’m not usually that much of a dick to people while I’m working, but as soon as she stepped into the room, my cock was straining against my pants and the way she glanced around the room and dismissed me with a look pissed me off; I opened my mouth and the words just tumbled out. I’m usually so calm and controlled, but for some reason the woman just sets me on edge and I’m not sure if it’s a good thing or not.

“Emmeline…” I say and watch as she rolls her eyes but carries on walking. I fight my grin. God, she’s got the best resting bitch face I’ve ever seen. “I was thinking…”

She snorts in a very un-ladylike manner; she still hasn’t looked in my direction. “Don’t hurt yourself there, stud.”

Stud? What the hell? “Funny,” I mutter, but I admit she’s quick witted. I like that.

She grins. “So, you were thinking?”

Damn it. Where the hell has all my control gone? “I was wondering if you were busy tonight, I’d love to take you out for dinner; my way of apologizing.”

She turns to me and raises a brow. “And what exactly is it that you’re apologizing for?”

Shit. I like her. I want her writhing in pleasure beneath me. Screaming out my name as she comes.

“Oh, you want the list?” I quip and watch as her lips twitch. “I was an ass for implying you were the receptionist.”

She shakes her head as she comes to a stop, crossing her arms over her chest, showing off her ample cleavage that her silky blouse showcases. “You were an ass.”

“So dinner?” I ask and I can’t help but hold my breath as I wait for her to answer me.

“Sorry, stud, but I have plans tonight.” She gives me a wide smile. Fuck, but she’s gorgeous. “I’ll see you around, Logan.”

I watch as she walks away; the skirt she’s wearing hugs her curves and is tight across her amazing ass. I’m pretty sure that if she bent over, that motherfucker would split. Her luscious hair is thick and curled and falls half way down her back.

She’s strutting as she walks toward the subway station, Fuck, no one has a strut like her. My cock is straining against my suit pants and I bite back a groan as she glances over her shoulder and winks at me. Damn. She’s fucking amazing. I want her and I’ve only just met her.

Damn that ass. Images bombard my brain of me taking a riding crop to that luscious ass of hers. Hell, I’d even get off spanking it. I can just picture it being soft but firm. The woman has a body built to tempt men.

Tonight, I’ll go to Club Temptation. I’m going to need to work out my frustration.

“Ma?” I yell as I walk through the front door, my arms filled with bags.

“Hey, baby.” She smiles as she walks up to me, her eyes gazing over me as she always does whenever she sees me. It stems from when I was younger and the only way I used to get my anger out was to fight. Most days I’d come home with cuts and bruises. A furrow comes between her brows as she frowns. “What’s with the bags?”

“Shopping,” I announce as I kiss her cheek and push past her toward the kitchen. “I stopped by the store on the way.”

“Logan.” She sighs. “What have I told you about this?”

I ignore her and start to unpack the shopping. My mom works hard; she’s a waitress in the city, she gets paid peanuts and relies heavily on tips. But those vary from week to week. She also has to pay for the career that comes in to look after Bobby when she’s at work. I’ve tried being sneaky and paying for that but she pitches a fit and refuses to let me do it. This is the way I can look after them both.

“I’m okay, truly I am,” she tells me and the conviction in her voice makes me turn to look at her. “I had hoped to tell you over dinner, but you’re always so hard headed.”

My body tenses at her words. “Tell me what?” I say through clenched teeth.

Bobby runs into the room and throws his arms around me. “Hey dude, you doing okay?”

His grin lights up his face as he nods. “Mandy is my new friend.”

I smile, his happiness is radiating off of him. I lean in and whisper conspiringly with him, “Is she your girl?”

He nods. “Yep, she’s the best.”

I slap him on his back. “That’s awesome, dude. When am I gonna meet your girl?”

His grin fades. “When you get your own. You’re not allowed to steal mine.” I’d laugh if it weren’t for the seriousness on his face.

I hold my hands up in surrender. “She’s all yours, dude. Besides, you know me; I love the ladies, but no woman can tame me.” Even though I say the words, the image of the gorgeous brunette with an amazing ass and a perfect rack comes to my mind. Damn. Emmeline Jacobs.

He laughs just as I had intended, whereas Ma just shakes her head. “What am I going to do with the two of you? Are you staying for dinner?” she asks.

I hadn’t planned on, but the hopeful look on both hers and Bobby’s faces has me agreeing. “Ma, I’l
l order us something. Bobby, why don’t you set the table for us?”

He nods, his face all serious as it is whenever you set him a task. His eyes filled with determination as he goes to the dining room. It’s one of the many things I love about my brother. His fierce determination in all that he does; he doesn’t let his limitations best him. He shoots for the stars, and I’ll be damned if I won’t help him reach them.

“What is it that you wanted to tell me?”

She sighs. “I’ve been seeing someone.”

I’m pretty sure I’m not breathing. “How long?” I manage to get out.

She shrugs. “About six months now.”

I stare at her in disbelief. “And you never said anything?”

Growing up, it was always the three of us against the world. My dad was an asshole who used to beat on Ma because he couldn’t live with the fact that one of his sons wasn’t ‘normal’—whatever the fuck that is. When I was old enough and big enough, I stepped between them and gave my father the biggest beat down he’d ever received. He got the message loud and clear that he would not be touching her again. We’ve not seen him since then.

“I wanted to be sure that he was for me. I want you to meet him, Logan; I want you to see how sweet and caring he is.” Her tone is pleading and I’m screwed; there’s no way that I’m going to deny her.

“Fine, but one wrong move and I won’t hesitate to put him on his ass.”

She smiles, her entire body relaxing. “Thank you.”

I shake my head. “Don’t thank me yet, I’ve not met him.”
