“You ready?” Bella held out her hands for me to take.
“Yes.” I placed my hands firmly in hers, feeling more determined than ever. “Let’s go save my daughter.”
She nodded, and then the world flashed out around us as we disappeared into the ether.
The crossroads were in Ireland’s Ancient East, at a place called Loughcrew Cairns. Despite being a bit over an hour away from the major city of Dublin, Loughcrew Cairns was full of green land for as far as the eye could see. It was sparsely populated, minus the busloads of tourists that came through to see the faerie trees and tombs.
Neither tourists nor locals came to the crossroads. Not because the crossroads weren’t beautiful. With a clear sparkling lake in the center, chirping birds, colorful flowers, and a large faerie tree with branches like umbrellas full of leaves, the crossroads were absolutely stunning.
But the crossroads emitted powerful magic—magic that repelled people. Only those in the know, those daring enough to risk a deal with the fae, came here.
Bella and I teleported smack into the middle of a circle of glowing rocks that made up a faerie ring. Outside the faerie ring, misty rain fell softly on the grass. Inside the faerie ring, the weather was perfect. Although the sky was cloudy, so I couldn’t see the moon.
But I knew it wasn’t full.
Bella handed me the small bowl I’d need to use to create the mixture to call upon the fae. “I’m going to step off to the side,” she said. “But I’ll be ready to help in case anything goes wrong.”
“Nothing will go wrong,” I said.
“I hope not. However, you have backup if it does.”
I nodded, watching her move away to stand near the faerie tree. Once she was in place, I walked up to the bushes near the shimmering lake, picked exactly thirty-three red berries from their leaves, and put them in the bowl. Next, I dumped the vial of the blood from the human I’d killed in with the berries. Lastly, I picked a nearby rose and pricked my finger with one of its thorns.
“I want to learn a permanent, unchanging way that all creatures of Earth can use to get from Earth to a currently safe place that’s populated with faeries in the Otherworld,” I said as I dropped thirty-three drops of my blood into the bowl.
The question was pointed and specific, since faeries were known for twisting their deals. If I only asked for a way to get to the Otherworld, they’d likely tell me a way that used to exist but has been closed off for centuries, or lead me to an unsafe place where I’d be ambushed by a hoard of monsters. I didn’t want to give them an opportunity to avoid giving me the answer I needed.
With the stem of the rose, I stirred the mixture until the berries were soaked in the blood. Then I removed each berry one by one and tossed them into the shimmering lake, watching as they drifted to the bottom.
All was quiet. I stared into the water, my skin prickling in the breeze as I waited for something to happen.
“Prince Jacen Pearce,” a light, airy female voice said from behind me. “I’ve been expecting you.”

ABOUT THE FAERIE PAWN:
I need to learn how to control my new magic—before it gets me killed.
As the first ever Faerie Games player gifted with magic from the king of the gods—Jupiter—all eyes are on me. Especially since I won the first competition of the Games. Now I need to send three other players to fight in the Coliseum until one of them is dead.
The two that survive will be gunning for me later. So I need to choose my alliances carefully. And as much as I hate to admit it, the magnetically attractive Julian is tempting me to work with him moving forward.
I should hate Julian, since he kidnapped me to the Otherworld in the first place. But he’s helping me learn how to control my new magic. And I’m drawn to him on a level I don’t understand.
One player will win the Faerie Games and survive. The rest will die.
I need to win. If that means getting close to Julian… then that’s exactly what I’m going to do.
