“Mostly, I’m just thankful that we’re about to go home.” I had no idea where the future was going to take me, but I certainly hoped it would include her.
There wasn’t even a moment for the past to come through and ruin the future. I’d found something so much better then what I’d originally thought.
Epilogue
Rudi
My success hadn’t come in quite the way I’d planned. The Generals had promoted me, but due to the signed peace treaties, there could be no more work on weapons that might be used for war.
Thankfully, Karl had helped me move most of my experiments to the underground labs I’d had built by the prisoners before they became test subjects.
I chose to ‘retire’ to my family’s estate out of the publics gaze so that I could work on the virus. Publishing a few papers kept me known to the scientific community and made me stay abreast of new techniques.
With Karl by my side to gather those who were unwanted from the streets, I had an infinite group of those willing to volunteer for my experiments which would prove useful in the future.

Meanwhile in America—Joseph
I had gone back to school for the necessary courses to become a scientist. I needed to find a way to test out his theories and I was certain that some of the men who had lived after being bitten were somehow immune to the virus that threated to wipe out an entire army.
When I contacted Lieutenant Roman to see if he would be willing to have a few tests performed to see why the bite from the infected undead hadn’t killed him, he agreed.
A stupid accident in the lab with some of the test blood had gotten into a cut from the test tube had broken into a jagged edge leaving me with exposed skin.
I sat there anxiously awaiting my fate knowing that I would never be able to see Emma’s gorgeous face again.
We’d gotten engaged and I couldn’t wait until we were married. I’d promised her that we could get married as soon as my promotion came through from my work.
Worried when nothing happened, I called her to say that I wouldn’t be able to see her that night. It wasn’t until the sun broke through the skylights in my lab that I realized the sample of Lieutenant Roman’s blood much have an anti-dote to the virus.
I contacted the war department when I explained who I was, they connected me with the department of defense.
Faster than I could blink, all of my research was transferred to the nearest army laboratory and I was given all the help I could get to perfect a vaccine that could save us from the possibility of becoming infected.
It would later be called the polio vaccine finally relieving me from the terrifying nightmares that plagued me for years after returning to the States.
