Elusive Identities Page 24

She broke off and picked up her fork, shoving a bite of food in her mouth. This wasn't a subject for now. But Chris wasn't the type to let it go. She should have known that.

"You've been thinking what?" he prompted. "What's going on?"

Sighing, she rubbed at her aching temples. It had been a crappy day. "I've been thinking that maybe being a reporter isn't what I really want to do when I grow up."

"What would you like to do?"

"I don't know," she admitted with another heavy sigh. She'd been sighing too much lately. "It just doesn't feel like how I want to spend my days anymore. I should have gone to law school like my parents suggested."

  "Would you be any happier?"

"I don't know," she replied honestly, "I just think I need to shake up my life a little bit. Everything...has changed. I need to change with it."

His expression was serious, his smile vanished. "Do you want to change your mind about me?"

Is that what he thought? Silly man.

Swiftly standing, she shifted so that she was sitting on his lap. "Hell, no. You're the one thing in my life right now that feels solid. And good. Why? Are you thinking that we're moving too fast?"

They had moved kind of quickly. If he was having second thoughts...

"Fuck, no," he said bluntly, his fingers capturing her chin so she had to look into his earnest blue gaze. "I love you, honey. I'm a grown man and I know what I want out of life. I'm not some wishy-washy kid who wants to date around and see what's out there. I know what's out there and that's why I want you. In my life, my bed, my heart, and my future."

She leaned forward and rested her forehead against his and placing her palm on his chest again. She wanted to feel that heartbeat again. There was something about it that centered her and made everything okay.

"For a former cop, you sure sound like a poet."

  "I'm a complicated guy."

Giggling, she pressed her lips to his, a tingle running up her spine. "I love you too, by the way."

  "I know."

Her brows rose. "Oh, you know, do you? How do you know?"

"Because you wouldn't be here if you didn't."

"You're such a know it all."

  "I know that, too."

She ran her finger down his stubbly cheek, rubbing their noses together playfully. "Then you'll know what I want to do after dinner."

His smile was slow and sweet. And a little sexy, too.

"I do, but do we have to wait until after dinner? The food will reheat."

He was right. Food could wait.

She'd been waiting her entire life for that elusive emotion love, but it was here and she'd grab at it with both hands.

A future with this man sounded pretty damn good.

"I don't want to wait, either. Sweep me off my feet, cowboy."

Who was she kidding? He already had.
