Deep in Your Shadows Page 30

by Darien Cox

“How many of these grown babies are there?” Myles asked.

“Oh. Was double thousand and four twos? Then attack Whites with ships stole. Whites destroy. Lose many. Now single thousand and...six hundreds. Should be.”

“So they lost almost half trying to take on the Whites. And they’re still going?”

“Stubborn. But not all to die in battle. Follow Whites to Earth. Stay in the close by. In ships. Fleet. Live in fleet. Make demands. Threaten humans to Whites.”

Myles stiffened. “They’ve been threatening to hurt humans?”

  “To frighten. To push Whites.”

“Where are they located?” Myles asked.

“Many ships. Too close for Whites. Show up in the...too near to Earth? Whites say destroy. But say not to destroy. Baz.” He placed a hand on his chest. “Others like Baz? Second generation? Say no to harm grown babies. Babies grow angry and nasty, but no to harm. We say, no, to deal with, yes. But to destroy, no.”

“You guys didn’t want them killed. And the Whites agreed?”

“We say, to destroy? Baz goodbye! Us goodbye! No work.”

Myles snorted. “You went on strike?”

  “Ah ah ah. Yes. Okay.”

“You must have loved them a lot,” Christian said. “This all must have broken your heart.”

Baz’s head bowed. “Easy, no.” He looked up. “Sad. But dangerous now. Grown babies to live. But to stay out. No to Earth base.”

“Wow,” Christian said. “I’m surprised the Whites didn’t just say screw you guys, we’ll get someone else to do your jobs.”

“Oh, no. Baz jobs? Beneath. Beneath Whites. Jobs to hybrids.”

“Damn are they a snotty ass bunch,” Christian said. “So the angry nasties were kept alive but the Whites wouldn’t invite them in. How did that one craft that crashed into the lake get in?”

“White say, intrude? No. Give vehicle to grown babies. Big. Beautiful vehicle. Grown babies take, promise to stay out. Perimeter? Promise. To stay out. Crash in lake? Break promise.”

“The Whites gave them a ship? Hoping to placate them?” Myles said.

“Yes. In the before. Before crash to lake. Say, not to destroy, but stay far from base. Not welcome to us. Take ship. Bigger than all you have. Be happy.”

  “Guess it wasn’t enough.”

“No. Angry nasty now. Stay nearby. Plan. Spy. Listen to humans. Try listen to Whites.”

“Would it have been so terrible for the Whites to just invite them in? To show them the base and give them a sandwich or something?” Myles said. “That might have made them happy.”

“Myles.” Baz shook his head. “No to go back in time. Grown babies never to be kind again. Others? Vehicles to see when travel? Angry nasties to see others when travel?”

“You mean other races of extraterrestrials?” Christian asked.

  “Okay.”

“They came across others on their journey here.”

“Yes. Okay. Angry nasties...” Baz slapped his hand down on the table. “Aggression. Capture. Do to animals on moon? Do to others see in travel. Let in to base? Sandwich? Noooo.”

Myles’ mouth fell open. “They captured and tortured others in their travels.”

Baz’s head hung. “To amuse.” He looked up. “To invite? Dangerous. Whites protect humans. Try to leave alone, angry babies. For Baz and others. Try not to...piss off. What you say? To walk with eggs.”

“They were walking on eggshells with the angry nasties,” Myles said. “That’s why they wanted you to get Christian’s team to take out the ones that showed up here.”

“Okay. Baz and others now...mistake? Guilt. Tell to leave angry babies alive. Angry babies cause harm. Baz fault.”

“It’s not your fault,” Christian said. “You were trying to give them a chance.”

“So what now?” Myles asked. “How confident can I be that the village is safe from these things?”

“Now,” Baz said. “One more.” He held up a finger. “Whites try one more to made deals with. To give to happy. If fail, say to Baz, if fail, Baz and others to shut up. Grown babies be destroy. For safety. For Whites. For humans. For others all to the travels. One more. Try last time. But now? No to get close to planet, to base, to village. Or Whites destroy with no wait.”

“Let me see if I’ve got this clear,” Myles said. “The gauntlet has been thrown. The Whites will destroy any craft they see getting too close to Earth. They’re gonna try one more time to reason with the angry nasties. Probably out of guilt, or maybe pressure from you and your friends. But if that doesn’t work, it’s lights out for the angry nasties.”

Baz slid his sunglasses back on as a tear rolled down his cheek. “Lights out. Babies goodbye. For always.” Baz huffed a breath and his head hung. “For always.”

Christian sighed through his nose as he looked at Baz. “And the Whites gave you permission to share this with us? With Ogden and the rest of the team.”

“Okay.” Baz swiped a tear from his cheek. “They. Say to Baz, okay to tell. Humans to know to safe. Humans never happy with not enough truths. Baz to give humans truths to make relax with know. Hoggin to not...bark like dog! Go back to field.”

Christian snorted. “Bark like dog? They said that about Ogden?”

Baz smiled. “Translate. Close enough. Apology. Not Baz. They.”

“Hey, you’re not offending me,” Christian said. “It’s kind of funny. Baz, are you okay?”

Baz quickly wiped the shed tears off his chin, a self-conscious gesture. “Baz okay.”

“Can I give you a hug?”

Baz’s shoulders stiffened and he leaned back in the chair. “No to hug. Chrischris love Myles.”

“Oh, boy.” Christian ran a hand over the top of his head. “Baz, I’m sorry if that was inappropriate, but understand that sometimes people hug each other and it’s not about love or intimacy. It’s just a gesture of comfort.”

Baz’s white skin got that pink tinge again. “Kind, Chrischris. But Baz best to not.”

“All right,” Christian said. “Just know that whatever happens, and because of all that has happened to you, you have our sympathies. And when I tell the others, I know you’ll have theirs too.”

Baz’s shoulders hunched. “Thank to you.” Baz stood. “Okay. Done. Baz goodbye.”

“Hang on, hang on,” Christian said. “You don’t have to leave just yet, do you?”

“They tell to Baz...what words. Translate. Thinking.” Baz rubbed the bridge of his nose, an oddly human gesture. He dropped his arm and focused on Christian. “Say to Baz, not get too comfortable. Baz not human. Baz forget not human. Have job. No social.”

“I see.” Christian frowned. “Well if you ever do want to come and just hang out, you’re welcome to.”

  “Okay.”

“It was nice to meet you,” Myles said.

  “Pleasure.” Baz smiled. “Goodbye, Chrischris.”

“Bye Baz. Take care of yourself.”

Baz walked to the door, but didn’t open it. He stood before it, and Myles watched as a white mist formed around him. Myles stood.

“Don’t interfere,” Christian said, touching Myles’ hand. “That’s how he gets taken up. Or taken down. Or whatever.”

The mist thickened around Baz, then dissipated, and the foyer was empty again.

Sighing, Myles sat back down. “He’s gone.”

Christian squeezed his hand. “Yeah. Hoo! That was something.”

  “Yeah.”

  “I’m all emotional now.”

Myles pulled Christian in for a kiss. “Me too,” he said as he eased back. “But I have to go to work soon. And I want to kiss you for a while before I go. Any way we can put off analyzing this until tonight?”

Christian smiled. “Okay. That mean I’m going to see you tonight?”

  “Yes.”

“Good. I’ll fill the others in today. Then I’ll catch you up to speed tonight. Where should we meet?”

  “You’ve
been through the shit lately. I want you to come over to my place tonight, let me cook for you, bathe you, massage you, then fuck your brains out.”

Christian’s pupils dilated. “Any way you have time to do that last part now? Before you leave for work?”

“I’ll make time.” Myles took Christian’s hand as he stood, then led him to the bedroom.

They silently stripped off their clothes and climbed under the covers, reaching for each other. For a long moment, Myles simply hugged Christian, sensing he needed it as much as sex.

Christian snuggled into him, sighing. “Can’t believe I offered Baz a hug and he rejected me.” Christian snickered. “I’m embarrassed now.”

Myles laughed. “Yeah. That was awkward. More so for him I think.”

“I guess I crossed a line in hybrid customs.”

“I don’t think it had anything to do with customs. He didn’t want you to hug him because he likes you too much.”

Christian shifted onto his side, frowning at Myles. “Likes me too much?”

Myles nodded. “That hybrid has a thing for you.”

“Come on. Not you too. JT said that.”

“JT’s right. Pretty sure Baz has some type of fondness for you that he’s not entirely comfortable with. He told me I was fortunate to have you.”

“That doesn’t mean anything. He was just being nice. Besides, it’s weird! He wouldn’t be attracted to a human. We’re too different.” He eyed Myles, looking unsure. “Right?”

“He raised part-human babies to adulthood. He’s familiar with humans, and he’s half human himself. I don’t think it’s such a big leap. He called you kind. He cares for you. And he blushed and looked terrified when you asked to hug him. Said Chrischris loves Myles. I think he knew that hug would have meant more to him than it did to you.”

“He’s just super nice, that’s all.”

  “He called you beautiful.”

  “What?”

  Myles chuckled. “Yeah.”

Christian rolled onto his back and covered his eyes with his arm, grinning. “This is embarrassing.”

Myles climbed on top of him and moved his arm away from his face. “He likes you,” Myles said, grinning. He pressed his cock against Christian’s, feeling him stiffen beneath him.

“Feels like you like me too,” Christian said, wrapping his arms around Myles’ back.

“No,” Myles said. “Baz likes you. I’m in love with you.”

Christian’s grin disappeared, eyes widening. His hands left Myles back and reached up, holding his face. “Really?”

“Really.” Myles kissed him, grinding against him. “I’m in love with you, Christian Boucher.”

Christian moved his hips in time with Myles, but held his face back when Myles tried to kiss him again. “You mean it. I can see it in your eyes.”

  “Yes. I mean it.”

“I’m in love with you, too. I could come just looking at you right now.”

Myles took Christian’s hands off his face and pushed his arms over his head, linking fingers. “Then keep looking at me,” he said. “And come.”

Myles held Christian’s hands, maintaining eye contact as he thrust against him. Christian tried meeting his rhythm, but their cocks kept slipping and sliding apart. “Don’t move,” Myles said. “Just let me take you.”

Sighing, Christian smiled, his hips going still. “I’m all yours.”

Myles lined their cocks up again and thrust against Christian hard and fast, clinging to Christian’s hands. He kept his eyes on Christian’s, letting him see whatever showed there, then speaking the words. “Love you, Christian. And you are mine.” Myles’ arousal swelled as Christian’s brown eyes stared back at him, full of heat and emotion.

Myles’ breath grew labored with the effort but he kept grinding against Christian, feeling him swell and grow stiffer. Christian groaned and closed his eyes.

“Thought you wanted to look at me.” Myles pumped harder, his body jerking Christian’s against the mattress.

“If I do I’m gonna come right now.”

Myles’ orgasm was pounding at the door as well, and he didn’t want to stop it. “Open your eyes,” he whispered. “And come with me.”

Christian’s eyes opened, brows pinching, and he spilled his seed, coating their joined flesh. The lubricant of Christian’s release heightened the pleasure and Myles’ hips jerked. “Oh fuck.” His cock slipped off of Christian’s but he kept thrusting, coming against Christian’s belly, moaning while he buried his face in the crook of his neck, licking his salty sweat.

Christian’s arms slid around Myles’ back, holding him tight, their hearts beating against each other’s chests. Myles kissed along his jaw, capturing his lips, kissing him slow and deep. When he came up for air, Christian had a smile on his face. “Happy?”

Christian beamed. “Was it the orgasm or the smile that gave me away?”

Myles grinned. “A bit of both.”

“I’m happy,” Christian said. “And in love. And in lust. And still can’t believe you stuck with me through all this. I’m still afraid you’re gonna freak out and take off. Go live a normal life somewhere, far from all of this.”

“I just had coffee with an alien. I don’t think my life will ever be normal again.”

“So you won’t freak out on me and leave? Really?”

“I want my life to be here, with you. And if that means making our own normal, so be it. We’ll figure it out.”

Myles kissed Christian again, getting lost in the velvet sweetness of his tongue, wishing he didn’t have to leave for work. But it was all right. He’d see him tonight. And tomorrow. And many nights after. As many as they wanted. Because Christian was his.

And Baz was right. Myles was fortunate. And he wasn’t going to take that good fortune for granted, or turn away from it, simply because it came with a few mind-bending realities that he’d have to adjust to. There was no reason good enough, in this world or any other, to walk away from this naked man holding him, a man he’d once arrested and locked in a cell. That night he’d wanted nothing more than to have Christian Boucher as far away from him as possible, never knowing that one day he’d not be able to get close enough.

But he’d keep trying to get closer, deeper, knowing he was a lucky bastard to have the opportunity.

And he didn’t need a higher being from another world to tell him that.
