Taurus: A Hearse of a Different Color Page 24

Dylan walked into the kitchen area. It was open concept, with a serving bar with stools so people could choose to eat at the bar or at the little table in the living room. He opened the fridge and put his fruit and vegetables away. He took out a block of cheese and some bread.

  “Want some?” he asked.

“No thanks,” said Gwen. “I’m still working on this giant sub!”

“Where did you come from today?”

“Oh, just a couple of short jaunts. Boston, Buffalo and then Toronto.”

“That’s not so bad. I’m still trying to catch up on sleep from my Heathrow/Pearson gig. When do you go back?”

“Actually, in a couple of days at the crack of dawn I’m off to LaGuardia, and then I have two days to hang out in New York City!”

“Those are the sweet gigs!” Dylan smiled. “Love New York! Will your roommates be home there?”

“No idea. I guess I should text them later. Make sure they’ve not rented out my mattress as an Airbnb!” she laughed.

  “I’m sure it’s tempting.”

“It’s a crappy part of Brooklyn but yeah, tourists will stay anywhere to get a taste of the Big Apple.”

Dylan came in with his plate of cheese, bread and grapes and sat on the couch next to her.

“Watching anything?” he asked as he grabbed the remote.

“Nope. I’ve not been here that long myself and was just screwing around on my tablet.” Gwen said as she shut down the YouTube.

“You’re into conspiracy stuff... want to watch some docs on Netflix?”

“If you can find one I’ve not seen yet!” Gwen laughed.

Two days passed quickly. A couple more trips to the Laguna Paradise, jogging around the downtown core, a bit of shopping at Kensington Market and it was over. The sun was barely lighting the blue black of the sky as Gwen, dressed in her work uniform, hair tightly tied back with a small cap securely bobby pinned in place, walked to the streetcar stop with her little rolling suitcase. She didn’t mind taking the transit to the airport, as there was a direct bus from Union Station to Pearson, as long as she gave herself lots of time. Why pay $50 for a cab when she could get there for just under four bucks? And at crack of dawn rush hour, a cab wouldn’t necessarily be faster.

The streetcar came quickly and then she was boarding the bus to the airport. As she settled in for the ride, she pulled out her tablet, put in her earplugs, and watched a freshly posted video about someone who supposedly had been able to hide in Area 51 for a week during the chaos of the September 20 attempted infiltration.

She was engrossed in her video when the bus stopped at the last stop before the highway portion of the trip and let on more people. She quickly glanced at them, as people do when travelers are boarding and leaving. Or maybe she only watched because as an airline attendant, she was hyper aware of people boarding and departing. She also tended to scrutinize people quickly. Sometimes she felt like she was RoboAttendant with how quickly she could judge people by their looks and belongings. However, she didn’t need to judge the stranger who boarded the bus. She’d seen him naked just a couple of days before at Paradise Lagoon.

He didn’t notice her as he took a seat at the back of the bus.

She wondered if he was going to Pearson as well. Maybe he’d even be on her flight.
