Lori was hiding in the restroom in the empty emergency department. When he walked in, the place was empty. He immediately thought the worst but still called out her name. It was with grief rather than expectation, but eventually he received a faint call back.
She told him that one of the doctors, the only one covering the department, had started taking patients away into the consultation rooms. They thought he was treating them, but he wasn’t. He was using his instruments for other purposes. It wasn’t until the blood seeped under the door that everyone ran out of there. The only reason she remained was to wait for Dan. He’d told her he’d be back and she believed him.
They drove back to Dan’s place. The front door was wide open so Dan went in first. He held the gun out in front. Paul was gone, so was most of the paper, his book. He’d missed a few squares that were covered in blood. If anything had been written on them, it would have been illegible.
They packed up as much as they could into the van. On the way out he glanced at his library, at his collection of first editions and signed copies of his favorite horror titles.
“You want to take them?” Lori asked.
“No more horror,” he replied. “Never again.”
The End.
