“UnAlive: Full Novel” Sneak-Peek:
9:15 PM TIANJIN, CHINA – TODAY (LOCAL TIME):
Yue stumbled into the bathroom, coughing and yanking at his tie. The briefcase slipped from his hand and dropped to the floor, clattering open and spilling the contents like innards. He careened off the wall and reached for the sink, dropping his phone into a nearby basin. He was only half way home, but he’d had to get off the train.
His latest project had kept him working late. Before leaving the office, he had started to feel strange—not sick, necessarily, just off. He figured he was exhausted. By the time the Metro had left the station, he knew something was wrong. He felt hot all over. His heartbeat had quickened. Strange blisters had begun to appear around his eyes; he noticed them on the other people on the train, too. Some of them wore masks; others coughed. One person had passed out and lay splayed-out on the floor. No one offered assistance. They all kept their heads down, eyes forward.
Yue tried to call home several times but got no answer. Haizhou and Oliver would have eaten by now. The thought made him feel sick. Dropping his head to the sink, he splashed cold water on his neck, waiting to see if the vomit would come. He spit continuously, trying to rid his mouth of the thick, mucous-y feeling inside. Lights flickered and buzzed; the room seemed to shift and tilt. The place was empty. The only sound in the small public restroom was the slow dripping of water and his own laboured breathing. From the basin beside, his phone began to buzz. Haizhou was calling, wondering where he was. He would usually be home by now.
Yue reached for the phone but was wracked with a horrible pain in his gut. He dropped to one knee. It felt like he had been punched in the stomach. And yet, it felt more than that; it felt as if . . . something were moving inside his intestines.
He stayed like that for some time, hoping no one would come into the restroom, but wondering if he needed to be found. A bloody jacket lay in one of the corners. Dark handprints stained the walls above it like malevolent graffiti. He stared at it, wondered what happened, but it was hard to focus.
The pain subsided. With sweat pouring off him, he struggled to his feet and splashed more water on his face. After a moment, he heard a noise, subtle and foreign. It seemed to come from right beside him—inside of him; a moist, crackling sort of sound, like batter being stirred in a bowl, or an egg cracking. He lifted his head, trying to hear the sound better, and saw himself in the mirror.
Steadying himself with both hands on the sink, he leaned in. At first, he thought he was hallucinating, or that the dull, flickering light was playing some trick on his feverish mind.
The veins along one side of his head had gone dark; delicate, spidery strands emerged from his jet-black hair like thin roots, half-buried beneath the soil of his smooth skin. The veins moved—he could hear them—bubbling and boiling, twisting and weaving like some hideous vine. He poked at them, hearing the horrible squishing sound they made.
Then something happened to his eyes. The small blisters that had appeared were now swollen and enflamed. For a moment, they seethed beneath his skin. One by one, they burst open, leaking atrocious yellow pus. Tiny strands began to emerge from the center of each one. All at once, his left eye rolled back insanely and sank further in, until all that was left was a horrible gaping cavity. Yue began to moan and shake uncontrollably. He clutched at the open socket, but bursting forth like tentacles, a hideous something clawed out of his socket and spread across his face. He felt the tentacles pulling and scraping, invading and consuming his flesh as they went.
Then, both eyes were gone.
Yue screamed uncontrollably.
Haizhou was calling again.

It is the first instalment in an intended trilogy, with Book 2 (“UnAlive: Redemption”) scheduled for release in late 2015.
