  Mitchell~

Mitchell gave Zoë’s ex his patented stare. Braver men than Chad Trafford had crumpled under Capt. Reynolds’ stare. Trafford backed up a full foot, until his back encountered the door. His mouth opened and shut like a goldfish’s.

Mitchell bared his teeth. “Why are you really here?”

Three’s eyes bulged. He leaned against the door, as if he had intentionally wound up there, and appeared to consider his options. The aggression died out of his body and face as if it had never been there. He smiled ruefully and extended a hand.

“Chadwick Ellery Trafford III,” he informed Mitchell. “Zoë and I are... colleagues.” Another pause. “And friends. Very good friends.” He waited.

Mitchell ignored Three’s hand. He had shaken with lots of fellows without liking or wanting to like them. But he was damned if he was going to touch Trafford unless he used his feet or his fists.

If ever a guy needed a swift kick, it was this one. What kind of douche implied to a woman’s present lover that he had had her first?

“Mitchell Reynolds,” he responded in his coldest tones. “Zoë’s fiancé. What do you want, Trafford?” Every time he said he was Zoë’s fiancé, Mitch got a bit of a rush. A sort of primitive jolt of power. Had to keep that banked down. He would think about what that meant later.

“She quit her job,” Trafford announced in carefully modulated tones. “Out of the blue. Which is atypical behavior. Totally unlike her. I was worried. Not just me. Lots of people were – are – concerned about her doing something so out of character. Her coworkers. The governor. I volunteered to track her down.”

Uh huh. “You ever heard of phones, Trafford? You can save a lot of gas by making a simple phone call.”

“She wasn’t answering her cell,” Trafford said piously. “Very worrying.”

Was this douche for real? Zoë had probably blocked him. “Well, as you can see, Zoë is just fine.”

“If I could just offer my congratulations to Zoë in person?” Trafford gave a gracious smile that made Mitchell want to slap his face. “After all, none of her friends had any idea she planned to get engaged.”

Mitchell didn’t respond to that piece of shift. Some subtle psi wafted from Trafford. What the heck was this asshole up to? He kept his tone flat and businesslike. “You already saw her.”

“Say,” Trafford continued with just the right amount of pleased surprise, “You’re not one of those Reynolds, are you?”

“Which Reynolds would they be?” Mitchell asked. He leaned against the wall and folded his arms across his chest. Which made his sheet slip a fraction. He resisted the urge to rewind it. Three’s eyes bugged out even more.

/>   Maybe Trafford had never seen an unwaxed six-pack before? Or a half-naked warrior? Maybe it was the gouges left by shrapnel and bullets? Mitchell showed his teeth again. He supposed you could call that expression smiling. More like a threat grimace. But Three was a fool.

He pressed his luck. “From Luck Harbor?”

“Uh huh. Just like Zoë. What about Luck Harbor?” Mitchell couldn’t believe Three was attempting to charm him, when the idiot ought to be in full retreat.

“The Reynoldses of Luck Harbor are well-known philanthropists,” Three said with what he plainly thought was an ingratiating smile.

“Yup. You got a point, Trafford? Because I was planning to help Zoë comb her hair.”

The whites of Trafford’s eyes showed. Proving he wasn’t too dim to feel fear.

Mitchell leaned over Three, teeth still showing. “I’ll give my bride your good wishes. You can tell all your… colleagues that Zoë is just dandy.” He reached behind Trafford, turned the door handle, and hauled the door open, bumping Trafford and forcing him to scamper sideways.

Chadwick Ellery Trafford III obviously wasn’t used to scuttling through barely cracked doors, but scuttle he did.

As soon as the latch clicked, the bedroom door opened. Zoë was back in the robe with a towel around her hair. She looked disapprovingly at the front door.

“I thought you were going to thump him,” she said. A long pause. “Griff would have thumped him.” Her tone was my-big-brother-can-whip-yours provocative.

He let the sheet fall. “You are a minx, Zoë Worth.”

She shook her head. The towel unraveled. Her robe came undone. “Bear.”

“I didn’t want to make a scene and embarrass you.”

  “Shame.”

“Tell you what, if he comes back, for sure I’ll use him to polish the silver.”

  She sighed elaborately. “Promises, promises.”

“You going to brood on Three, or make love?” Mitchell asked.

“Sorry. I’ll try to keep up.” She turned her attention to his erection. “What shall we do with this big boy?” She placed both hands around it.

  “Lady’s choice.”

  CHAPTER ONE

  Olympia, Washington State

  Zoë~

Crap. For the second time in as many days the stick turned blue. Zoë Worth sat down heavily on the edge of her bathtub and stared morosely at the test results. She laid a protective hand on her bare belly.

Not your fault, she assured her baby.

These days an unmarried mom was no big whoop. Except in Luck Harbor, Oregon. None of the big unreconstructed male members of her family and clan were going to be okay with fatherless Zoë Worth having an illegitimate baby.

Those good old backwoods men had primitive ideas about females. Every bear jack of them. The old-fashioned, protective, righteous sweethearts.

No matter if she had been a grown woman for a decade. No matter that they had loathed Chadwick Ellery Trafford III on sight. If she wasn’t careful, she would be enjoying a shotgun wedding with that nasty piece of work. Double crap.

She couldn’t marry a douche who despised her clan. The one time she had taken Chad home to Luck Harbor, he had sneered at her people. Oh, he was too slick to come right out and call them hicks. But it was obvious.

He had been more than a bit surprised when he discovered that most of those bumpkins were loaded. He had immediately started talking about marriage. As if that ship hadn’t sailed.

Unfortunately, it had taken that trip home to Luck Harbor to open her eyes. It still seemed impossible that she had ever believed that she had found the special man to love her plus-sized plumpness. Her one true love. What had she been sniffing?

Chad thought he was smarter than her. Smarter than her kinfolk. As fricking if. Once she had twigged to his real attitude, she had decided they were through, and was just waiting for an opportunity to inform him.

That was true even before she had overheard him trying to pump Cousin Caroline about Aunt Ursula’s portfolio. He had tried to pretend that Caroline was hitting on him. Nice try, toe-rag. She had only delayed handing him his walking papers because he was her ride back to Olympia.

Aunt Ursula Reynolds, the unofficial matriarch of the Luck Harbor Clan, had said it best, “That one thinks he’s too good for us, and that we’re dumb as rocks. Dumber. Where’d you say you found him?”

  “I met him through work.”

Zoë worked in the governor’s office as one of his many speechwriters. Chadwick Ellery Trafford III was a lawyer. His father was the governor’s attorney and a long-time friend. Chad hung around on the fringes of politics. Waiting for opportunity. Hunting for a war chest. Making friends with the governor’s aides. Camouflaged as a good guy. Her bad.

For a while, Zoë had hoped he was The One. On the Fourth of July weekend the scales had fallen from her eyes. Crashed really. Her feelings for Chad snapped into focus as soon as she realized how he really felt about her. It was all about her money.

And as soon as Aunt Ursula had pointed out that Chadwick Trafford couldn’t pass her sniff test, Zoë stopped fooling herself. Chad was slick and plausible. However, his interest in her began and ended with her trust fund, which she had naively assumed he knew nothing about.

Typically, Aunt Ursula had been forthright. “Hmph. I tell you what, Zoë, that fellow has no scruples. I hope you don’t think Caroline lured him out to the kitchen. He followed her there to ask about my holdings.” Caroline was a financial planner. She had taken over Aunt Ursula’s considerable portfolio.

Not that Caroline had told him squat. Her cousin was no fool and she didn’t discuss her clients. And even if she had, Aunt Ursula wasn’t about to support any politician’s campaign just because Caroline suggested it.

But Chad had believed he could deceive not only Zoë but the entire clan. That no one would notice his sketchy behavior. Least of all an elderly woman. Fortunately, for Zoë, he had picked the wrong clan to mess with.

Caroline was mated and married. Bears loved forever. Caroline wasn’t looking for an affair with her own cousin’s boyfriend. That wasn’t how Luck Harbor bears behaved. Chad thought Zoë would take his word for what that little scene in the community center kitchen meant. As fricking if.

Chad had probably found out about Zoë’s trust fund online. He might have done some research about the Reynolds’ and Worths’ charitable contributions. He could have discovered that Aunt Ursula owned half of Luck Harbor. That stuff was in the public domain. But there was no way he could have known he was trying to outfox an entire family of bears.

When Chad only had Zoë to concentrate on, he had co
nfounded her bear shifter senses. But amongst a crowd of bears, his lies had rapidly been laid bare. Pun intended. Even if Aunt Ursula and Uncle Bruce hadn’t warned her, Zoë would have realized that she had fallen for an empty shell.

It was just too bad that they had already become lovers before she recognized Chad for the slimy weasel he was. A comparison that was probably unfair to clean-living, high-minded, decent, patriotic weasels everywhere.

Heaven only knew how or why her birth control had failed. But failed it had. She must have already been pregnant when she told him they were through. But that didn’t mean Chadwick Ellery Trafford III was Zoë Worth’s fated mate.

Not that he had taken her dismissal well. Even after she blocked him on her phone and social media, he had used his friendship with the governor to harass her at work. He had gotten her well-meaning, sympathetic coworkers to do his dirty work for him too.

You couldn’t blame people for being taken in by Chad’s imitation of a devoted lover seeking a reconciliation with his beloved. Her colleagues thought it was romantic. That his flowers and chocolates were charming.

The slick SOB had turned stalking into an art form. But if Chad was capable of love, the object of said love was Chadwick Ellery Trafford III.

What on earth was she to do now? Mama and Daddy had both passed. Her older brother and sister were deployed. Capt. Cindy Worth was in Syria. Heaven alone knew where Maj. Griffin Worth of the USMC had been sent. The Marines did not advertise Recon’s missions. Griff had told her to expect silence for a couple of months. She was on her own with this little problem.

She touched her belly again. Tenderly. Sorry, little one. But your daddy is a slime-ball. It’s just the two of us. And she intended to keep it that way. It was going to be hard to stand up to her outraged clan. When those good old bears found out she was pregnant they would demand Chad do the right thing.

Which would suit that piece of shift down to the ground. He would eagerly marry her, expecting that this would be his in to the Luck Harbor money. Not on her watch.

Not that any of her relatives were foolish enough to write him a blank check. Or any check at all. Neither was Zoë. Moreover, she had no intention of saying vows she didn’t mean to keep. No marriage was better than a bad marriage.
