The Secret Diary of Detective Vampire Page 10

by J. J. Jones

“There was a shot, someone shot at me,” she says remembering that the man had shot at her.

“Yeah luckily he was a bad shot,” I say trying to laugh it off.

“No, he wasn’t. It wasn’t coming straight for me. I remember now, Jack. You pushed me down, so I wouldn’t get shot,” she looks at me, “so that means…” she doesn’t finish her thought.

“So that means what, Olivia?” I say.

“So that means you must have been shot,” she says.

“I wasn’t shot, Olivia,” I try to smooth things over. “You must just be confused.”

“I’m not confused. I remember now. I know it was you. You were there and you took the bullet for me. And here you are fit as a fiddle, no bullet wound,” she sits up and looks me in the eyes. “I know what you are, Jack. You can not hide it from me anymore.”

“Huh?” I say, wondering if she was going where I think she was going with this.

“That fight in the bar, the fact you have not aged since I met you and other things all led me to wonder.”

“Wonder what Olivia? You sure you are feeling ok, you hit your head pretty hard.”

“I am sorry Jack but I had to do it.” She carried on. Maybe she really was losing it.

“Do what Olivia? You are not making sense.”

“I had to bug your car. I wanted to know the truth about what I was getting involved with before I fell for you even more then I have done.” Olivia paused and looked me in the eye. “I know where you went the other night and I also now know what you are. I put it all together myself.”

I laugh trying to keep my cool and see if I can call her bluff, “Okay, Olivia, what am I?”

“I know you are the Vampire Vigilante Jack.” she replied.

  Dammit.

Time stood instantly still as she said those words. I knew there would be no point trying to deny it any further as Olivia was no fool.

I began to contemplate what this could mean for me now my secret was out.

On the one hand, Olivia might be OK with this and she might understand why I do what I do. She might be willing to keep my secret and even possibly help me.

Then again who am I kidding? Olivia is a cop. She might not be OK with this at all and turning me in would be huge for her career. This is probably more likely knowing her. She is a tough one. If anyone is going to hand me in I would want it to be her but I am not ready to be handed in just yet.

If Olivia is not OK with this then my only options would be to leave and make a run for it, or to kill her. I think we all know I am definitely not going to kill her so it seems like my decision to leave would be taken out of my hands.

The thoughts run over and over in my mind for what must have been ages in real time. I have to know how she feels about this and the sooner the better. I turn my voice to a whisper.

“OK Olivia, I am not going to insult your intelligence by denying it. I just need to know your thoughts first, are you OK with this?”

I really hope she can tell me what I want to hear.

I watch as a tear begins to slowly roll down her cute little cheek.

“No Jack, I don't think I am. Sorry.”

She was not OK with it and in that moment I knew I had no choice. I would have to leave the woman I love. Forever.

  Unless....

“Olivia, if you want me to leave then I can leave right now and you will never see me again and I will totally understand that. But can we at least talk about this?”

“OK Jack, but I think we should start at the beginning..” Olivia replied, sitting up in her bed.

I moved my chair a bit closer and began to do what most human males have to do at some point in their lives. Explain themselves to a woman.

Clearly, there was going to be an awful lot to discuss....
