It wasn’t so much the gangs that had him worried. They would regroup over time and get at least some of their mojo back, but they were old-school and crude in their methods, relying on brute force and terrorism to accomplish their ends. The forces for good had beaten them and would beat them again.
But another, more sinister threat was quietly on the rise. The powerful crime families, the scourge of eastern cities for over a century, had never been a factor in California. The civil war had uprooted the social institutions, creating fertile ground for these mastermind criminals with the vision and the sophistication to infiltrate the government and make the system work for them. These new enemies were coming out of the shadows, and soon they would be at the gates.
And Dominic Salvatore would be there, waiting for them. In taking his sister, they had made an implacable enemy, unleashing on themselves a nightmare that would never end as long as they drew breath.
