And he had saved my life.
I closed my eyes.
He kissed me.
It’s really happening, holy shit.
He kissed me more, his tongue prying apart my lips. Parker never was one for subtlety. I opened mine as our tongues darted around each other. His hand went under my shirt and toward my breast—
“Wait, stop.”
I scooted myself away from him. This was just a little too much, a little too fast. I knew if I slept with him here, I would regret it for a multitude of reasons.
“You OK?” Parker asked.
“Yeah, just… this is too much,” I said.
But now that I was sobering up to the situation, it was more than just it going too fast.
“Parker… it’s obvious by now I think you’re attractive. You saved my life, and I owe you for that. But I don’t owe you sex. If I’m going to do anything more with you, it has to be meaningful. I’m not just going to spread my legs for you, let you get your rocks off, and then call it a night. You know?”
Parker, to his credit, didn’t get mad. He more just seemed frustrated.
“Besides, we have to deal with the Anarchists. I’m here to take care of that. That’s priority number one. Everything else will fall into line. We take care of them, and you and I can see if there’s anything here. But until then… I’m sorry.”
“Nah, I get it,” Parker said. “But ya know I ain’t gonna stop flirtin’ with ya, right? Ya know I ain’t just gonna leave this to the side.”
I smiled and rubbed his arm at that. To say I felt conflicted was certainly an understatement—I wanted his body, sure, but I had to maintain distance. I wanted him to flirt, but I wanted us to stay professional as well. I wanted the Anarchists to be gone, but I knew we had to do something about it.
“We’ll see,” I said, even as I knew that just because I’d said no to him didn’t mean that things were over. “I could use a ride home, though.”
“Me?”
“You’re like a hundred pounds heavier than me, you won’t be drunk. Besides, I trust you.”
Parker bit his lip, shrugged, and said, “Hell, why not?” He went to the back to get something, giving me the chance to quickly glance at my email. I only had one new email.
It was not a good one.
“Dumb bitch” was the subject header. I looked inside and saw a photo, clearly taken from a distance, of Parker hovering over me. The text only read “You’re with the wrong people.”
“Parker,” I said, biting my lip.
He came back out in a hurry, speedwalking to me. I showed him the email.
“Shit,” he said. “Guess we’re in for a treat sooner than expected.”
