  Acknowledgements

The list of people who have offered help and encouragement on my writing journey so far must be truly endless, and it would take a novel in itself to mention them all. However, my heartfelt gratitude goes out to each and every one of you, whose involvement, whether small or large, has been invaluable and appreciated more than I can say.

There are a few people that I must mention. Obviously, my family – the people who put up with my whining and self-doubt on a daily basis are top of the list. My mum and, posthumously, my dad, who brought me up to believe that anything is possible if you want it enough, no matter how crazy or unlikely it seems. My ex-colleagues at the Royal Stoke University Hospital, who let me lead a double life for far longer than is acceptable and have given me so many ideas for future books! The lecturers at Staffordshire University English and Creative Writing Department, who saw a talent worth nurturing in me and continue to support me still, long after they finished getting paid for it. They are not only tutors but friends as well.

I have to thank the team at Bookouture for their continued support, patience and amazing publishing flair, particularly Lydia Vassar-Smith – my incredible and patient editor – Kim Nash, Noelle Holten, Peta Nightingale, Leodora Darlington, Alexandra Holmes and Jessie Botterill – collectively known as Team Tilly! Their belief, able assistance and encouragement mean the world to me. I truly believe I have the best team an author could ask for and I could not continue to do the job I love without them.

My friend, Kath Hickton, always gets a shout-out for putting up with me since primary school. Louise C
oquio also gets an honourable mention for getting me through university and suffering me ever since, likewise her lovely family. And thanks go to Storm Constantine for giving me my first break in publishing. I also have to thank Mel Sherratt and Holly Martin, fellow writers and amazing friends who have both been incredibly supportive over the years and have been my shoulders to cry on in the darker moments. Thanks to Tracy Bloom, Emma Davies, Jack Croxall, Clare Davidson, Angie Marsons, Christie Barlow and Jaimie Admans: not only brilliant authors in their own right but hugely supportive of others. My Bookouture colleagues are all incredible, of course, unfailing and generous in their support of fellow authors – life would be a lot duller without the gang! I have to thank all the brilliant and dedicated book bloggers (there are so many of you but you know who you are!) and readers, and anyone else who has championed my work, reviewed it, shared it, or simply told me that they liked it. Every one of those actions is priceless and you are all very special people. Some of you I am even proud to call friends now.

I’d also like to mention The Donkey Sanctuary at Sidmouth for being so generous with advice and information on caring for donkeys. If you loved the donkeys in Hattie’s Home for Broken Hearts, please consider going to visit them or perhaps making a donation.

Last but not least, I’d like to give a special mention to my lovely agent, Madeleine Milburn, who always has time to listen to my gripes and does so with a smile on her face.
