Her Alien Prince Page 18

by Presley Hall

Flipping his knife around neatly in his grip, Jaro holds it out to me, taking two steps forward until the handle is within my reach. “Here. Use this.”

My eyebrows shoot up as I stare down at the knife. Is he serious? When I glance back at his face, I find him watching me with a searching expression.

Is this some sort of test? And if it is, what’s the right answer? What is he hoping to find out?

Warily, I shuffle forward and take the proffered blade from the alien warrior.

As my hand closes around the handle, my fingertips brush against his. It’s only the barest touch, but awareness shoots through me like a bolt of lightning. I jerk back, just barely managing to avoid dropping the knife with a clatter. My fingers tighten around the handle, and I swallow hard, fighting to keep my expression neutral.

It’s the first time I’ve touched one of these guys, and I wonder for a second if they’ve got electric skin. After all, they have strange white markings swirling over their bodies, and I swear I’ve even seen the markings glow slightly on some of them. It’s not really outside the realm of possibility that they all carry some kind of current. Or maybe their skin is venomous, like a stingray.

Did he do that on purpose? Is that why he gave me the knife? Was he fucking with me?

The man’s face is unreadable as he steps back, but his shoulders look more stiff and his mouth is set in a line. I can’t tell if he’s mad or something else. I’m no good at reading emotions, especially with someone whose face is so impassive all the time.

Ugh. Stop reading into everything, I berate myself. It was probably nothing. Just static electricity.

“You can give it back to me later,” the alien says, jerking his chin at the knife. “I’ll be outside the ship.”

“Okay.” I nod, lifting the weapon slightly. It’s solid and heavy in my hand. “Thanks.”

Jaro still doesn’t acknowledge my words of thanks. He just gazes at me for a long moment as if I’m a puzzle he can’t figure out, then turns and strides from the room.

As I watch him leave, I let out a breath I didn’t realize I was holding. A strange fluttery feeling moves through my stomach, and I swallow hard, glancing down at the knife again. I don’t know what just happened, but it fits firmly into the category of “things that don’t make sense,” and it’s left me feeling more unsettled than ever.

Adjusting my grip on the handle, I return to the bank of panels, but my mind is racing as I get to work opening the next one.

I knew it. I was right.

We definitely shouldn’t be going with these men.
