“Really,” Natalie said. “I’ll be fine. I’m always being asked to get involved in other things. I’ve never had time before, but now I do. I can go onto the board of a non-profit, or consult doing pro bono tax reviews for worthy causes, or something. I’ll work it out.”
Evie was a little surprised. “That easily?”
Natalie shrugged. “I’ll find something.”
“A charity?”
“I think so, yes.”
“But without boardrooms and expensive suits…” Evie said.
“I still have suits.”
“But boardrooms. And restaurants. And expensive wine.”
“And worthwhile causes, and helping them out.”
“Oh,” Evie said, still getting used to it. “You really wouldn’t mind?”
“I don’t think so, no. I mean, I’ve been doing tax for twenty years. Longer, actually. Something new might be a nice change.”
“You really mean that, you aren’t just, I don’t know…”
“Making the best of an awful situation?”
“Yeah,” Evie said.
“No, I’m not. I truly would like to try something new. Like…” Natalie stopped.
“Go on,” Evie said.
“Like I did with you, I suppose.”
Evie nodded, pleased Natalie was happy. She didn’t understand, but that didn’t really matter. For her, there would need to be an actual job, a place to go every day. She had assumed it was the same for Natalie, but apparently it wasn’t. Natalie had a plan, and was happy, and that was what mattered.
“Then we’ll be fine,” Evie said. “Everything’ll be fine. You’ll find something else, something you actually want to do, and I’ll be with you, which is all I really need.”
Natalie was smiling. She looked at Evie fondly.
“What?” Evie said. “Stop staring like an asshole.”
Natalie kept staring.
“Stop it,” Evie said.
“Did I mention that I really, really love you?”
“You might have,” Evie said. “But you may as well tell me again.”
Natalie smiled. “Well, I really, really love you.”
“Good,” Evie said. “And same.”
Natalie sighed. “Could you actually say it?”
Evie grinned. “I love you, asshole.”
“Thank you.”
Evie leaned over, and kissed Natalie, and said, “Come to bed.”
