Forbidden Eyes: A Cane Novel 4 Page 35

by Hart, Charlotte E

“You know how much I love you, don’t you?” he says in my ear, as I land my back at his chest. I nod, letting my ass grind into his thighs as I enjoy the rhythm between us. It feels like so long since we’ve just had fun like we did in those first few weeks.

He turns me again, bringing my face up close to his. “I don’t want to call you a Vico anymore, Fia. I want you to be a Wade.” Everything in me stops moving, and my head rears back to look at him. “Sofia Wade. What do you think?” My mouth opens, lips floundering for words.

“Are you… Are you asking me to marry you?”

“Yeah.” His answer is so matter-of-fact, as if it’s a simple question with an equally simple answer. And of course, it is simple. My heart expands in my chest to the point of pain, as I realise that this is really happening. I’m going to marry Carter Wade. There’s not a moment of hesitation or concern in my thoughts. After everything he’s been through for me, after everything we’ve been through together, there’s nothing I want more. Before I’ve even managed to answer him, though, he’s dropping down on one knee and reaching into his pocket. My hands fly to my mouth, a beam so wide behind them it almost hurts.

My lungs expand as I pull in a gasp on seeing a ring presented for me in a box. It’s nestled inside black velvet, a brilliant round diamond shining proudly in the centre of a halo of smaller ones. My eyes flick back to his, tears of joy springing into them. He pulls the ring from its home and lifts it. “Give me your hand,” he says.

Yes. Hand. Right. I offer it, and despite the subtle shake in both mine and his, he slides the ring onto my finger and sits back on his heels.

I twist it, mesmerised by its beauty—the intricacy of the details, the scrolls on the shoulders, the diamonds hiding around the band.

“Oh, God. It’s perfect. You’re perfect,” I choke out, trying to find a voice in the middle of this.

  “Is that a yes?”

“Yes. Yes, of course it’s a yes.”

Tears distort my vision as I watch him stand, his hand reaching for mine to pull me close again. I look up into his forest-green eyes, suddenly wishing we were alone so I could show him exactly how perfect he is—for me at least. We’re not, though, and the sound of hollers and cheers around us make me glance back to see Nate and Gabby standing and cheering, their arms wrapped around each other. Even the other guests are standing watching, all their eyes on us, and smiles on their faces. It’s perfect. All of it. And I can’t contain my tears from falling freely as he pulls me close and kisses me.

“Sofia Wade. Sounds kinda good,” he whispers.

  “It sounds perfect.”

“Yeah, sounds pretty perfect to me, too.”

He kisses me again, wiping out all thoughts apart from him, and I know that I’ll work as hard as I can to make sure I’m as close to perfect for him as I can be.

Because he’s everything my heart and soul will ever need.
