Secrets of My Heart Page 27

by Tracie Peterson

“Your mother thought you’d be out here,” Seth said, coming to join her.

Nancy turned and nodded. “I just wanted a few minutes of quiet, and this seemed like the best place to come.” She turned back to her brother’s grave. “I feel I can finally lay him to rest.”

Seth wrapped his arms around her from behind and pulled her back against his chest. “I’m glad—for your sake. God never intends for us to carry such burdens.”

He kissed her just behind the ear, and Nancy sighed. “I loved him so much. Do you think if God blesses us with a son, we might call him Douglas?”

“I’d like that. It seems more than fitting. Douglas Carpenter.”

“Of course, there’s a good chance I can’t have children. We’ve never really talked about that, but in all my eight years of marriage, I was never with child. Not even once.”

Seth kissed her neck again, then turned her to face him. “It doesn’t matter. Either we’ll have children or we won’t. What is most important is that we have each other. That makes everything else pale in comparison. Not that children aren’t important, just that our relationship and love for each other is a priority. After all, we can hardly be good parents if it’s not.”

“I know, but I want to have children. Your children.”

Seth kissed her. “I want that too, and you know what? I believe we will. Don’t ask me how I know—I just feel certain of it.”

Nancy wrapped her arms around him and placed her head on his shoulder. “I love you, Seth. I love you more than I thought possible. I thought all the love in me had died.”

“No, it was just hidden away. Hidden until it was time to be revealed.”

Nancy stroked the hair at the nape of his neck and sighed. “Just waiting for you to find it and draw it out from the shadows and into the light.”
