by Haley Weir

“What are you sayin’, Mary Ann?”

She stood up and bounced up to the tips of her toes. Pale, slender arms wrapped around his neck, and Sam felt his body come alive. She tilted her head back and brushed her lips against his. The taste of her awakened something in him, but he jumped back. “This...ain’t right. I love Savannah. I love Malia...I won’t leave my family.”

Mary Ann nodded her head. “I know. I just wanted to know what that felt like before I left tomorrow mornin’. Thank you, Samuel. Thank you for bein’ the best man in my life.”

“I need to stay away from you. Please don’t do this.”

“Go on, you tortured soul,” she said while pointing to the window with a smile. “Don’t ever say I didn’t do somethin’ nice for you. And stop sittin’ outside my window. It’s a little unsettlin’ this late at night. Besides, you don’t need to give this town any more reasons to hate you.” Mary Ann gave him one last kiss goodbye, then led him back out the window.

Sam ran home as quickly as he could and snuck in through the back door. He changed his clothes and said a prayer for his wretched soul before he opened the nursery. His footfalls were silent as he moved across the room like a shadow. Malia was bundled up tight with her chubby little fist shoved in her mouth. Sam ran his hand over the small tufts of sandy hair on her head and listened to her heartbeat as she slept soundly in her bassinet.

“Goodnight, Malia. Your daddy loves you.”
