Fliers Page 23

by Laura Mae

The crowd began to part like a sea, and she was the trident. In the middle stood her friends and family: Willow, Giovonna, Silas, and her father, Ian. They were all waiting for her. Giovonna was the first to hug her, then her father, then Silas. Willow stood resilient but then gave in and squeezed her like a teddy bear. The site looked gorgeous with red and white flowers blanketing the space around her mother, including a bouquet someone placed in her hands. Evelyn looked different than Sydona remembered. She looked like an angel beneath the white sheet. The blood had been washed away and she had absolutely no imperfections. Evelyn’s hair was combed and feather-like as it spread over the pillow her head rested on.

No one could hold back their tears. It warmed Sydona’s heart to know how truly loved her mother was and how much she would be missed. Silas gripped Sydona’s free hand while Ian put his arm around her waist. As everyone gathered closely around Evelyn, Raoul began to dust her from head to toe while fliers sang a tribal song known by fliers and fairies alike. The dust would help Evelyn’s body adjust to the afterlife and keep away the bad spirits that may sway her. A couple of people standing near her head pulled the sheet up over Evelyn’s face, and the dusting was completed.

Sydona held her friends and father close as she said her final goodbyes. As she finished, she looked up toward the sky to see a single finch singing a happy song. Her blue eyes followed him as he flew around the group, and she hoped that somehow it was her mother watching over her.
