“Hi,” Sylvia blushed as she clung to her mother on the way in. So not the child I had met at the house when she was in her comfort zone.
Chad was last and managed to sneak a quick kiss as he passed me.
“Mom will be right down. Dad isn’t here as yet,” I told them. “Here, let me take your coats.”
“Thank you,” his Mom smiled.
“You can sit anywhere you choose,” I offered with a smile. “Can I get you anything?”
“No, thank you,” she said as she sat on the sofa. Sylvia curled up next to her like an infant.
“Need help with anything?” Chad asked as Mom hurried down the stairs.
“Not really,” I told him. “Your Mom is beautiful. And your Dad is an idiot.”
Chad laughed. “I have to agree with you there. “Where is he today, by the way?”
“I don’t know. Didn’t ask, but Cheryl wasn’t there, so maybe he’s staying in alone.”
“Ouch! Not the best way to spend Christmas,” I mumbled.
“He made his bed. I’m right where I need to be.”
I grinned just as Mom entered the kitchen. “Get these on the table, please,” she told me. “You, too, Chad,” she said and handed him some serving spoons.
“Yes, ma’am,” he replied.
“Don’t ma’am me,” Mom said and patted him on the shoulder. “Sandy is fine.”
He smiled and walked away, just as the doorbell rang. I saw Mom fluffing her hair and straightening her clothes before she opened the door. I wouldn’t be surprised if they hooked up again.
“I guess we’re all here,” she said loudly and ushered Dad into the dining room where everyone exchanged pleasantries.
“Thank you all for being here,” Mom said. “Please, have a seat. Anywhere,” she said. We had a nine-piece dining table, so there was more than enough room. Mom sat at the head, Dad took the seat closest to her, Chad and I took the next seats across from each other, and Susan and Sylvia did the same.
“When we moved here, I thought for sure Sophia and I would be the only ones here for Christmas. I didn’t dream we would have this much company, but I’m glad.”
“Cheers to that,” Susan replied. “I thought it was going to be just me. Thank you so much for inviting us.”
“You’re always welcome here,” Mom said, extending an open invitation. “Now, I don’t know about you all, but I’m starving.”
“Me, too,” Sylvia said and giggled, much to her mother’s amusement.
“I guess we can do the gift thing later,” Dad intervened.
“Yes, that’s how we’ve always done it. Dinner first, then we mingle.”
“Likewise,” Susan smiled, though one could easily see the sorrowful look in her eyes.
Dinner was pleasant as the two families bonded and joked about everything and nothing.
We retired afterward on the patio as we played games and chatted animatedly. We exchanged gifts, did a little caroling, and then had eggnog, not the virgin kind – except for Sylvia.
“So, where do you plan on working now?” Susan asked.
“I haven’t checked as of yet,” Mom replied. “The last job was a really stressful one, so I was planning on taking a breather.”
“Okay, I understand that,” Susan relayed. “But we have to keep in touch, and when you’re ready let me know. I have some contacts at Madison Falls Memorial. With your record, it’ll be an easy win.”
“Oh, thank you. I appreciate that. And I’ll definitely keep in touch.”
The evening wore on until Chad and I were able to slip away for a little alone time in my room.
“You think they’ll notice we’re not there?” Chad whispered in my ear.
“Not really,” I replied. “They’re really getting along. And Sylvia’s busy playing with her phone and checking IG.”
“Okay, so that means we have about thirty minutes to get nasty?” he asked and bit my earlobe.
I pushed him off and laughed. “We are not having sex with our parents downstairs.”
“I had to try,” he grinned as we returned to the futon at the base of my bed. We curled up together in front of the TV and began our search for a movie we both wanted to see.
“It wasn’t a bad Christmas after all,” he said in my ear.
“No, it wasn’t. Merry Christmas babe,” I said and turned my head so I could give him a kiss.
“Merry Christmas.”
And he hugged me tightly. We forgot what we were searching for on TV as we got lost in each other’s embrace and our lips met and created the perfect ending to a crazy year.
The end…
