"Ah, Chevalier Nino, tell me!"
"You will lately have noticed in this realm a thinning of old nobility. Maybe the king is ill-advised, or maybe Count Raoul, God have him in keeping, has sworn to revolt if it be not done; but in any case I am count-designate of Saint-Aunay, the only condition being that I marry the late count's heiress."
"Chevalier – I mean my lord Count – I – I–"
"Nay, lad, no need to say these things, with such an offer as yours scarce cooled upon the air. I am not yet a lord; but when I am one there will always be honour for you at Saint-Aunay. And now – come away from this carrion. Is that his dagger, with the silver hilt?"
"Yes. Now I think I will take his sword – and offer it upon my knees, for it will please Heaven to know it can do no more wrong. Will you not keep the dagger, Chevalier Nino?"
"Gramercy. Gladly I will. When I think of John Doust it will not be unpleasant to look up and see the silver hilt and remember this day by the ford – by our ford – by the fort that Joris may have used for many a bloody raid…
"You have the sword? And I the dagger. And the Fiend his black soul. King Thorismund shall have his golden head, and the crows and kites the red rest of him. And now we will find my lord Count."
"Ay, that is Joris," said Raoul of Ger, when Nino slit the cloak for his inspection. "So I may keep my promise to our lord the king; for the head we thought to belong to this rogue was not worth sending to Hautarroy…
"So, Juhel, you have purged the realm and quitted me of my task. God knows I owe you enough already; but what can I give you now?"
"A blade for one thing," smiled Nino. "And a rap on the shoulder therewith, for another."
Juhel went very pale, and crossed his hands on the nicked hilt of the long sword he carried. From the golden-brown face of Nino Chiostra he looked to the brown-ivory face of Raoul of Ger.
"My lord Count," he said simply, "you can give me one thing only."
"It is yours – but what may it be?"
"Your leave to enter Holy Church," said the son of Joris of the Rock.
