“Right, in top kissing shape,” Sully said.

Surprised by his tone, Lux stopped at the door to listen.

“I thought you wanted nothing to do with her,” Sully went on.

“I guess this whole fiasco with Romeo opened my eyes. Everything that’s happened these last days have filled me with regret; regret for not protecting her; regret for not stepping in, and regret for not letting her know how I really felt about her. Almost losing her was a real wake up call for me. I’m not going to live with any regrets when it comes to her anymore. Including how much I want her. I’m sure you understand how I feel.”

Sully snorted. “Indeed, I do. I was beginning to think you’d never join the club.” He walked up to his brother and patted his shoulder. “Although, it doesn’t really change anything. I’m not afraid of the competition. In fact, I welcome it. Because, in the end, I’m going to get the girl. Spending time with you will only highlight how good she has it when she’s with me.”

Lucas let out an amused laugh. “Unfortunately, I’m not your only competition, little brother. Asher is interested in her and so are those two guys she’s been trying to save. And there’s still Romeo to contend with. Maybe he wants more than just her angel blood. Maybe he really wants the woman that she is. He isn’t out of the picture entirely. He’s just not going to be playing the same role as the Professor as before. A woman like Lux is always going to have men trying to get closer to her, always wanting her.”

“I know that, but she’s worth it. I know how many girls in England, especially other royals, can’t wait to have you as their fiancé or me rather, but it’s Lux that we want. Speaking for me only, I know I’m crazy about her. You know me, I like playing the British aristocrat playboy out here in Vegas on the scene, but since meeting her, I haven’t been able to see or go out with anyone. When I do, she’s all I think about. She’s a passionate woman who works hard, fights harder, and loves hardest, and in the end, it’s me she’s going to love above all. Me, Lucas.”

  Chapter 7

Leaving her last class of the day, Lux was surprised to see Sully waiting for her at the huge water fountain in the center of the campus mall. Seated on the other side of the water that sprinkled down from the top tier of the artistically abstract sculpture, Sully looked angelic amidst the sparkling spray of water.

Lux smiled as he looked up and saw her, his face lighting up at the sight of her.

“Are you waiting for me?” she said when she reached him.

“Yeah. I wanted to walk home with you.” He stood to greet her and they began walking home. “Actually, I just wanted to make sure you didn’t head off anywhere else tonight.”

“Not that I had any plans, but why?”

“This morning Lucas mentioned doing all I can to make you stronger, to make you a better slayer. I thought I would show you how to properly seal a portal. It’s something vital that all slayers should learn.”

  “You’re right.”

“New portals can appear unexpectedly, or old ones can open suddenly, and you must be able to seal it right away and then ensure it remains sealed.”

As they arrived at the house they shared and Lux turned to take the path leading to the front door, Sully took her by the hand and tugged, leading her to the garage door instead.

“Huh? Where are we going?” Lux said.

“To a portal, silly. I can’t teach you how to seal one out here in our back yard.” He opened the garage door where he kept his vintage convertible red Porsche.

“Now?” Lux whined. “But, Sully, I’m starving. Can’t I just grab a quick bite to eat?”

“Come on,” he said, opening the passenger door. “Get in. I’ll make sure you’re well fed.”

“What, do you have a sandwich in the glove compartment?” she said as she slid onto the black leather seat.

“No, but I do know a great steakhouse,” he said. He closed the door and walked around to get into the driver’s seat. He started the car and with a powerful purr, they took to the road.

With the warm late afternoon breeze in her hair, Lux tilted her face up and closed her eyes. “This is nice,” she said after a while.

“Yeah,” Sully said. “I do love this car. It’s powerful, elegant, sexy and sophisticated.” He turned to glance at her. “Kind of like you.”

She smiled. “So where are you bringing me, exactly?”

“We’ll grab dinner just south of town, then I’ll bring you to a smaller portal that I sometimes tend to near there.”

“Are you a gatekeeper?” She suddenly remembered that Brax was a gatekeeper just like his uncle Dr. Kingsley. “I know that Brax tended to a few portals, watching the seals and going back regularly to reseal them.”

Sully nodded as he took the highway and headed south. “My mom is an expert gatekeeper.” He chuckled. “She has never, ever allowed a portal to open. She has an absolutely clean record.”

  “And you?”

“She taught us how to seal when we were young. Of course, there have been times when she had to verify the portal and seal it properly, but with time we got the hang of it and haven’t had any issues for years.” He turned to look at her. “You know, your father is a gatekeeper, too.”

  “I suspected he was.”

“So you must be one as well. These things run in the family and you probably have an instinct for it without knowing it. You just need to learn the specifics.”

After turning on a narrow road towards the west, then turning between the mountains, he pulled the car up in front of what looked like an old abandoned saloon.

“Is this it?” Lux said with uncertainty.

But as he pulled into the parking lot behind the old wooden structure, she saw dozens of cars and just as many motorcycles.

“I know it doesn’t look like much from here, but wait until you taste the food. This is the best kept Las Vegas secret.”

She followed him out of the car and into the nineteenth century. Amidst a décor of horseshoes, saddles, spurs and ten gallon hats, locals played darts and pool while enjoying a cold beer while others enjoyed huge slabs of prime steak in cozy booths set along the perimeter of the building.

Sully led her to a huge corner booth and ordered two steaks with baked potatoes.

“So, what do you think?” Sully said when their plates arrived only moments later.

Lux took her first bite and nodded. “I might be asking you to bring me out here on a regular basis,” she said as she savored the perfectly seasoned piece of meat.

“Anytime,” he said with a grin. “It’ll be my pleasure.”

“I like the atmosphere. All that’s missing are the Cancan dancers.”

“They only come out on Saturday nights,” he said with a grin.

She laughed. “Really? How in the world did you find out about this place?”

“We’re just on the outskirts of an old mining town. Sometimes they can be a problem. Without knowing it, people come around, they start digging, the open old mines and without realizing what they’ve really done, they’ve weakened the seal.”

Lux had noticed a few pieces of old mining equipment abandoned and left to rust in the desert.

“On my way to the portal one day. I hadn’t had time to eat and stopped in for a quick bite and I’ve been hooked ever since.”

“Hmm,” Lux groaned, closing her eyes as she chewed on the tender morsel.

  “Supposedly the place is haunted.”

“I’m sure that adds to the appeal.”

“I bet it does. And if it doesn’t, the best steaks and great beer surely gets people in here week after week. Unfortunately, although I could enjoy a cold brew back in England every once in a while, you people here, who don’t know how to hold your liquor, have made it illegal to drink until twenty-one.”

“Right,” Lux said with a teasing grin. “Because everyone in England is a reasonable drinker.”

“Don’t get me started. If you want to compare America to England, we could
be here all night.”

“You’re the one who started it.”

He laughed. “Fine, but I’m ending it now.”

Lux speared a chunk of steak with her fork and held it up. “Bet you don’t have steak like this back in England. She finished off her steak just as someone added coins to an old jukebox and an old country rock song came on. “That,” she said pointing to the jukebox, “is the Eagles. That is what America has to offer.” She swayed to the music.

“Even though we have the Beatles, not to mention the entire British invasion, I won’t argue with that. This is a great song.”

  “Isn’t it?”

  “Want to dance?”

“Oh,” she said with soft surprise. “That’d be great.”

He brought her to the small wooden dancefloor and pulled her into his arms. “This is nice,” he said, leaning back to look down on her. “I love having you in my arms.”

Lux leaned into him, looking into his beautiful eyes. As playful and immature as he could be sometimes, there was something so sweet, almost innocent about him, despite his sexual prowess.

“I know that every man in here is probably looking at you,” he said, “wanting you. Hell, I’d be willing to bet that a few of the women are probably eyeing you, too. It makes having you in my arms all the more special.”

He leaned in to kiss her, his lips instantly taking on an urgency that surprised her. The song ended, but his kiss continued. The tension between them was so thick.

“Get a room,” an older man called out. Leaning on his pool cue, he watched them with interest despite his remark.

Other patrons whistled and called out various crude remarks.

“Come on,” Sully said with difficulty, his voice so thick with desire. He led her outside and back to his car. He pushed her up against the fender and kissed her hard, his lips devouring her while his hands gripped and groped, petted and rubbed. “I can’t hold back anymore, Lux. I can’t pretend I don’t want you. I can’t act as if I don’t want you every second of every day. I don’t ever want to let you go.”

He sat her on the hood of the car and pushed the skirt of her dress up over her hips, exposing her cute little pink panties. “Damn, you’re hot,” he whispered, licking his lips. Pulling the panel of her panties aside, he ran his fingers along the wet flesh, licked his lips again then dove in to taste her.

Lux groaned her pleasure as she leaned back on the cool hood of the car. Sully took his time, slowly licking his way around her clitoris, bringing her to an excruciating level of desire that had her pressing his head into her crotch.

“Don’t stop, Sully,” she begged as he pulled back. “Don’t stop.”

He growled like an animal, a hungry animal satisfied with its prey. He dove in again, eating her, savoring her and ultimately bringing her to a delicious climax.

As her powerful orgasm ebbed away, Sully pulled out his cock and delicately stroked it as he watched her. Lux reached out to touch the tip of his cock, her fingers running along the rim of his cap.

“Holy crap,” Sully muttered. “I’m going to explode right here.”

Lux took a firmer hold of his hardened shaft, taking up the stroking motion he’d begun. As his cock became harder still, Sully brought his fingers back to her crotch, bringing her up to another powerful orgasm.

“Look what you do to me,” he said between gasping breaths. “I’m powerless under your touch. You have me. You control me.”

And with that, she accelerated the stroking motion, tightening her grip on his pulsating shaft until he spilled his joy all over her thighs and the hood of his fancy car.

“You know,” he said when the effects of his orgasm faded away. “I’m usually a maniac when it comes to keeping this car shiny and clean, but now, I couldn’t care less.”

“Forget about your car,” she said with a teasing grin as she looked down at her thighs. “What about me?”

Laughing, he pulled off his t-shirt, revealing a broad muscular chest that tapered down to V-shaped hips. He had a magnificent body that was tone and strong, and in tip top shape. He gently wiped her clean. “I’d ruin any shirt for you any day, Lux.” He kissed her softly on her lips. “It’s worth it as long as I get to be with you.”

As he finished cleaning her off, Lux noticed a movement beyond the bushes and cactus nearby.

“Sully,” she said softly and calmly. “I think we’re not alone anymore.”

He immediately read her tone and calmly pulled her off the car then fastened his pants. “Where?”

“Behind you. Maybe ten yards away.” She looked beyond his shoulder. “There’s another one. They’re heading away from the setting sun.”

“Okay. Good. Ready?” he said as he pulled a crucifix out of his back pocket.

  “I’m right behind you.”

Sully turned and headed in the direction Lux had indicated.

“Over there,” Lux called out. “The cemetery.”

He jumped over the flimsy fence that surrounded the old cemetery and headed to a demon hiding behind a fallen monument. With his crucifix out, Sully quickly destroyed the demon while Lux followed another one that was running amidst a row of low gravestones.

“Got it,” she called out as she vanquished the demon.

After Sully destroyed the third demon, he came to stand at her side. “That damn portal. It must be cracked open again.”

“It’s the perfect time to show me how to seal it properly.”

“Let’s head over to that old mining shaft. I’m sure that’s where the crack has started.”

They walked out of the cemetery and passed the abandoned mining equipment, the huge mounds of tailings and finally reached the narrow opening in the side of a rocky mound that served as the entrance to the mine.

  “Looks dangerous,” Lux remarked.

“It is. Sometimes these things collapse, sometimes there are dangerous gases and of course numerous critter that make these abandoned mines their home. But despite all the dangers, people still come into these things hoping to find gold.”

Lux peered inside the narrow opening. The entrance to the shaft was dark; pitch black.

“The portal is about twenty feet inside of here. You gotta feel your way. You okay with walking in the dark?”

Lux thought of her lesson with Lucas and nodded.

They entered the total darkness and Lux resisted the urge to reach out for Sully’s hand. She followed the sound of his footsteps as he made his way to the portal, and ran her hands along the rocky wall for a bit of guidance. But she also paid attention to all the other sounds around them. Water dripped and echoed from deep inside the mine. A critter, maybe a rat or snake, displaced small rocks and pebbles.

  “Here we are,” Sully said.

A strange fluttering sound passed close by.

Lux gasped. “What the hell is that?”

“It’s only a few bats heading out.”

Not one to be squeamish, Lux shivered all the same. Then she heard the rattling of metal on stone and the creaking of metal on metal and suddenly the small dark space was illuminated by an old oil lamp.

Standing there, with his bare muscular chest, dimly lit by the oil lamp, Lux momentarily caught her breath as she looked at him. Not only did the dim light throw a sexual aura around him, but the take-control attitude he suddenly adopted made him so incredibly alluring.

He pulled a vial from his other pocket and slowly walked around the small opening, sprinkling holy water along the crevice in the ground.

“Hic locus est ubi mors gaudet succurrer vitae,” Sully muttered.

Lux watched him, mesmerized by the deep tone of his voice.

He sprinkled more holy water and made the sign of the cross over the closing portal. “Pacem in terris.” He looked up at her. “Please join me in prayer,” he said solemnly. “You know it, don’t you?”

  “Not really,” she admitted.

“Didn’t Romeo teach you any prayers?”

  “No. I gu
ess he knew better than to teach me anything useful; anything that could affect him.”

Sully chuckled sardonically. “The bastard. The fucking bastard. He really did a number on all of us. Even with him out of the way, the effects of his time at the Academy will probably haunt us for a long time.”

  “It probably will.”

Sully sprinkled more holy water on the ground. “I’ll teach you the complete prayers some time, but for now… Hic locus est ubi mors gaudet succurrer vitae.” Once again he signed the cross with his fingers and looked up at her. “That should do it for now.”

“There are still so many cracks,” Lux said.

“Yes, which means we’ll probably be coming back here soon. The prayers and holy water will keep the cracks from opening for a while, but not long.”

  Chapter 8

Sully pulled his classy red Porsche into the garage, killed the engine and turned to Lux. Before she could get out, he leaned in to kiss her, a hard and passionate kiss that left no doubt what he wanted.

“Do you know how hard it is living in the same house with you?” he murmured through the kiss. “Yet I can’t really be with you. It kills me. It’s torture. I ache for you. I want to be with you all the time and holding back is only getting harder and harder.”

“What are you telling me?” Lux said.

“I’m telling you that I want you, exclusively. I want you to be with me. I want you to be mine. I want to be your lover… all the time. I want to be able to walk into the kitchen and see you there and go up to you and hug you and kiss you. I want to be able to snuggle up on the sofa and watch a movie with you. I want to hold your hand, put my arm around you… and sleep in your bed.” When Lux didn’t say anything, he leaned back to look at her, his hand playing with a strand of hair that fell over her shoulder. “Okay, then. What would it take for me to just be a part of your harem?”

“I don’t know what to tell you, Sully. You know that I enjoy my time with you. You’re fun and funny and there’s something about your carefree nature that is really appealing. But I came to this academy to get an education, not to find a lifelong mate.”
