Author’s Note
Gavin Cade and Isabel Tait, as well as Mary Queen of Scots’ ladies and other minor characters, are products of my imagination, but most of the others are actual historical figures. This includes Queen Mary; the Earl of Shrewsbury and his wife, Bess; John Lesley, the Bishop of Ross; the Duke of Norfolk; Roberto Ridolfi; William Cecil; and Lady Anne Clifford, among others.
The main settings in Game of Spies are actual places, and Mary stayed at, or visited, all of them. She was moved often, and for the sake of a consistent narrative, I chose the various locations and times of her visits to suit my story.
While the Ridolfi Plot was a real conspiracy, I altered the timeline and the order of events. Mary continued to involve herself in conspiracies for the remainder of her life, which eventually led to her execution by Elizabeth I in February of 1587.
