Chapter 1
“I hate Halloween.”
Jake Taylor dropped his fork of delicious pumpkin pie back on his plate and stared at his partner in shock. As soon as the kids fell asleep, they used the opportunity to work up an appetite and were now enjoying a midnight snack. Jake had baked the pie that morning. When his ex-wife Talia had left, he’d learned how to cook, bake, and take care of two kids under five. He loved every minute of it. The kids adored Sebastian. He fit right in with their family. Until now. “Excuse me?”
“I thought I was clear,” Sebastian said, eating his pie as if the world had not just ended.
“You can’t hate Halloween.”
Sebastian stopped eating long enough to glance up at Jake. “Fine. Then I am utterly indifferent to the holiday.”
“Please tell me you’re joking.”
“Jake, we don’t have to like the same things. For example, you love cars and I love numbers. That works out great for the both of us. I don’t have to take my car to a mechanic, and you have someone to do your books. Which were a complete mess, by the way.”
“We’re not talking about my accounting skills.” Jake owned Taylor Auto Shop and his friend and part time nanny, Allison, had been the previous bookkeeper. She did the best she could, but that wasn’t the point. “We’re talking about you trashing the greatest holiday of all time.”
Sebastian had the nerve to chuckle. “I thought that was the Fourth of July where you got to be all manly running the barbecue grill.”
“Hey, I’m awesome at barbecuing. Even your dad thought so.” Jake was surprised Sebastian’s family even talked to them after the whole almost-destroyed-their-business fiasco.
“Yes, you are.” Sebastian pulled him in for a kiss. “And you can use your spatula on me anytime.” He tasted like pumpkin pie and sex. Two of Jake’s favorite things. Sebastian nibbled along his jaw as his hand slipped under Jake’s sleep shorts.
“Bas,” Jake moaned. “We’re not done talking about this.”
“Really?” He squeezed Jake’s ass. “I thought we could take the rest of this pie, and I could lick it off your body.”
Fuck. Now that’s all he could think about.
Sebastian brushed his thumb over Jake’s growing erection, and he lost all ability to argue. Not that he usually won arguments. Sebastian had been an excellent lawyer.
“Fine you win,” Jake said, standing up quickly. He grabbed the last piece of pie, the can of whipped cream, and pulled Sebastian toward their bedroom. “Just so you know, we’re not done talking about this.”
“Nothing you can say will change my mind.”
“We’ll see. I’ve never been to law school, but I can be very persuasive.”
“Oh, I’m counting on it.”
Chapter 2
Myka giggled as she squeezed together her hands oozing pumpkin guts all over the table. At four years old, she was adorable and bossy. She and Sebastian often debated things like why frogs weren’t purple and who was daddy’s favorite. Jake had combed her long brown hair in a ponytail to keep it from getting messy, but that was a waste of time. Elijah’s favorite part of pumpkin carving was flinging pumpkin at his sister. They would both need a bath after this.
His heart warmed as he watched Sebastian scoop the insides of Myka’s pumpkin. Sebastian had no real experience with children before they got together, but he was great with the kids. Jake felt lucky to have him in his life. Even protesting that Halloween wasn’t a real holiday, Sebastian had agreed to help them. Jake knew he couldn’t resist Myka’s big blue eyes.
“Pumpkin is so messy,” Sebastian said as he held up his pumpkin covered hands. His eyes crinkled in laughter.
“You’re so messy.” Jake’s voice lowered just a bit. It reminded him of last night. Pumpkin pie had been everywhere it should never have been, but he had to stop those thoughts immediately. It was a long time before they could be alone again. And he needed to focus on pumpkin carving without cutting off a finger or two.
Sebastian winked at him, correctly interpreting his thoughts.
“Daddy? Why did you stop?” Myka tilted her head studying him closely.
“Yes daddy, why did you stop?”
Jake gritted his teeth to keep himself from saying something inappropriate to Sebastian. The bastard. He loved teasing Jake. “I’m trying to figure out what to carve.”
Once they finished their pumpkins, they took a picture to send to their mom. Myka carved a frog, her favorite animal of all time, but it looked more like her pumpkin had his face eaten off. Eli colored with a purple marker all over his small pumpkin. Jake watched him closely throughout the process. He tended to get marker everywhere including all over his body and his sister, if he could catch her. Sebastian had carved a fairly elaborate scene with a witch and a bat, while Jake carved a standard Halloween pumpkin. He liked traditional things. They put their finished pumpkins on the porch.
After the kids bathed and went down for their nap, Jake cleaned the kitchen. He was washing the lunch dishes, when Sebastian hugged him from behind and pulled him close.
“Want to get dirty again?”
“We can’t,” Jake said. His body didn’t get the message, as he couldn’t keep from pushing against Sebastian’s arousal.
“Why not? The kids are asleep.” He kissed the back of Jake’s neck.
“Bas…” Jake shut his eyes, enjoying the moment. He knew it couldn’t last. Myka was getting to the point where she didn’t take much of a nap. They couldn’t risk her waking up and catching them. “You know why.”
He stepped away smacking Jake on the butt and then grabbed a towel to help dry. "I do. I just love getting you riled up.”
Jake could focus better with Sebastian further away. “Besides we still need to talk about this Halloween thing.”
Sebastian sighed, as he put plates in the cabinet and grabbed a glass from the rinse water. “Why is it such a big deal? I never enjoyed Halloween.”
Jake turned toward him. “What about as a kid? Surely you liked dressing up and getting candy.”
Sebastian avoided his eyes as he continued drying the glass. Jake was sure it was already dry. Sebastian’s cheeks darkened. Was he embarrassed? Jake took the dish towel from him and dried his hands. Then he took the glass and put it away, before pulling Sebastian toward him.
“Bas? What’s going on.”
“It’s nothing. Can we just drop it?”
Jake tipped his face up, so he had to look at him. “Tell me.”
Sebastian sighed. “I never celebrated Halloween.”
“Never? What about trick-or-treating?” It seemed impossible.
“Can you really see my family letting us go from house to house begging for candy?”
Jake hadn’t thought about it like that. Sebastian’s family was loaded. They owned a big law firm in Kansas City and all his brothers were lawyers. He couldn’t envision it, no matter how hard he tried, but it still made him sad.
“Besides my dad’s birthday is October 31, so we always have a family thing on that day.”
“You’re just telling me this now?” Jake tried not to panic. Were his parents expecting them? Or maybe they didn’t want Jake and the kids there.
“It didn’t seem important.”
“You’re having a family thing a week from today, on Halloween, and it didn’t seem important?” He would do anything for Sebastian, especially anything to do with his family, but he couldn’t disappoint the kids. Myka asked him every other day if
it was Halloween yet. And they were choosing costumes that afternoon.
“No, it’s fine,” Sebastian assured him. “They decided to go to Italy for father’s birthday. Alone. A second honeymoon, although I’m sure they’ve already had two.”
“That’s sweet.” Jake loved that Sebastian’s parents had been together for over thirty years. Jake’s mom had died when he was a kid. Sebastian’s mom had taken Jake under her wing and treated him like family.
Sebastian kissed him quickly. He shook his head at Jake’s grin.
Jake couldn’t help it. Sebastian had no excuse now not to celebrate Halloween with them.
“Whatever you’re thinking, the answer is no.”
Jake wanted him to enjoy the holiday, but he wasn’t against using the kids to convince him. “We’re picking out costumes this afternoon. Myka’s very excited about it.”
“I’m not wearing a costume.” He turned his head away and tried to pull out of Jake’s embrace.
That’s when Jake got it. “You’ve never dressed up for Halloween, have you?”
Sebastian didn’t answer.
“Not even for school parties?”
“I want to a private boarding school.”
“What about in college? Surely there were Halloween parties at the fancy colleges you went to.”
“There were. I did not participate.”
“Seriously? Never?”
Sebastian frowned pulling away. “It’s not that uncommon.”
Jake disagreed, but Sebastian was embarrassed. Uncomfortable. And there was a hint of something else. The last thing he wanted to do was upset Sebastian. He grabbed his hand and squeezed. “It’s okay, babe. In fact, it’s awesome.” He smiled. This was the best thing ever.
Sebastian narrowed his eyes. “What are you plotting?”
“Nothing,” Jake said, squeezing his arms in excitement. “It just means you’re a virgin.”
“Obviously, that’s not true.”
Sebastian tended to take things literally. His awkward geekiness was one of the things Jake absolutely loved about him. He was so innocent. Unspoiled.
“Come here my little virgin.” Jake pulled him closer.
“You like that don’t you?”
“A thousand percent yes. And I want to be the one to tarnish you.”
Sebastian laughed, kissing his neck. “I repeat my earlier suggestion. Let’s get dirty.”
Jake loved seeing him happy. Sebastian’s life hadn’t always been easy growing up. There was a lot of pressure to live up to expectations. Money didn’t always buy happiness. Jake didn’t want to think about that now, not with Sebastian biting his favorite spot on Jake’s shoulder. He grabbed Sebastian’s ass pulling him tighter rubbing their erections together. Maybe they could fit in a quickie. Just to help Sebastian forget how much his childhood sucked.
“Daddy?” Myka’s voice drifted in from the living room. “Froggy can’t sleep.”
“Nap time’s over,” Sebastian said with a sigh, as they pulled apart just in time. Myka came in rubbing her eyes and carrying her stuffed frog.
“So is adult time.” Jake wanted to scream in frustration, but instead he smiled at his little girl. “How about we read a story and then try again?”
Jake knew there was no chance of them continuing where they left off. Sometimes it took a while for Myka to get to sleep. He was determined to get her to take a nap longer than fifteen minutes. The last time she missed her nap, she cried for thirty minutes because Eli looked at her wrong.
Chapter 3
“No,” Sebastian said. “Absolutely not.”
The Halloween store in downtown Lansing didn’t have a lot of choices. They could’ve gone into Kansas City, but Jake preferred not to go into the city if he could help it. They were searching for costumes to wear, and Sebastian was not helping. Jake put the vampire costume back on the rack and focused on his daughter instead. “You want to be a bumblebee?” He pulled the cute yellow and black costume off the rack, but she shook her head. Why did everyone have to be so picky? “What about a princess?”
“Princesses are dumb.”
Jake rolled his eyes as they continued down the aisle. He pulled out costume after costume but none of them made her happy. Sebastian followed along carrying Eli with a grin on his face. He was enjoying Jake’s frustration a little too much.
“This one, daddy.” Myka excitedly pointed to a black and red costume.
“Isn’t that for a boy?”
“I want to be a pirate.” She glared at him, her face determined.
“Are you saying girls can’t be pirates?” Sebastian asked, trying to sound innocent.
Great. They were ganging up on him. Jake rubbed his eyes. “If you want to be a pirate, honey that’s a-okay with me.”
“And you can be Peter Pan, daddy.”
“Yes, daddy, please be Peter Pan.” Sebastian chimed in, a big smile on his face.
“And Bath can be Captain Hook.” Myka jumped up and down in excitement. She had trouble pronouncing the letter S, but Jake thought it was adorable how she said his nickname.
“No,” Sebastian said. “That is not going to happen.”
“Why not?” Myka stared up at him, a pout beginning on her lips. “Don’t you want to go trick-or-treating with us?” Her eyes filled with tears, as if it was the worst thing in the world. And to a four-year-old, it probably was.
“Of course, I do, sweetie,” he said, putting Eli down so he could get on her level. He kissed her forehead. “I wouldn’t miss it.”
She hugged his neck and let go just as quickly to skip down the aisle.
“But why do the adults have to dress up?” Sebastian asked Jake as they trailed behind her.
“Because it’s fun?” Jake laughed. Sebastian took a deep breath and blew it out again.
“’Cus, we’re family,” Myka said, ending any protests he might have had.
Sebastian grumbled all the way home, and Jake thought it was adorable. He caught the look on his face when Myka said they were family. It meant a lot to him that the kids accepted him. Jake wasn’t sure how they’d feel at first. They took not getting to see their mom pretty hard. And while Sebastian would never try to take her place, he was an important part of their lives.
Jake enjoyed experiencing all of the firsts with Sebastian. Their first Fourth of July together had been amazing, with a barbecue that included both their families. He couldn’t wait for their first Thanksgiving and first Christmas together. This Halloween was special. It would be the first time Sebastian would actually get to experience Halloween the way it was supposed to be: The fun and frustration of dragging two kids out on a usually cold evening to beg for candy house to house. Jake was glad they lived in a safe neighborhood. Lansing had less than twelve thousand people in it.
Jake’s family didn’t have a lot growing up. After his mom died, his dad worked or drank whichever he felt like at the time. Jake and his brother, Greg, made their own costumes on Halloween, usually involving lots of gore.
“I still don’t see the point.” Sebastian stared ahead at the road, as he drove them home from the Halloween shop.
Jake reached over and took his hand. “Not everything has to be practical, Bas. Some things are just fun and crazy. We’re doing it together. That’s the point.”
Sebastian turned and smiled quickly at Jake. He squeezed his hand tightly before letting go. “That’s the only reason I agreed to it.”
“Can we wear our costumes when we get home, daddy?” Myka said from the backseat.
“Croc-dile. Croc-dile,” Eli chimed in.
Eli was Tick-tock the crocodile, and he loved his costume. Jake preferred to make all their costumes just like he did when he was a kid, but they didn’t really have time. Jake was busy at the shop, and Sebastian was working overtime most days. Maybe next year he could start planning earlier. Especially if things went well this year, Sebastian would be more on board to help h
im.
“You’re quiet,” Sebastian said.
“I’m just thinking about how cute you will look in that costume.”
“Don’t remind me. Seems like a lot to go through for something we’re going to wear for only a few hours.”
“Didn’t I tell you? Fay is having a Halloween party. We’ll definitely get some use out of them.”
Sebastian’s hands tightened on the wheel. “I did not agree to that.”
Jake couldn’t see his face, but he could hear the panic in his voice. “What’s the problem, babe?”
“I’m,” he paused. “New to this. Remember?” He glanced over Jake. “Can’t we just stay home? What about the kids?”
“I have a sitter. Besides we don’t get to go out as a couple very often. It’ll be fun.”
Sebastian sighed. “That’s what you always say.”
“And I’m always right.”
“You always say that too.
Chapter 4
Halloween turned out to be a perfect day. At least, weather-wise. It was cool but not too hot. The rest of the day didn’t go as smoothly. The kids were excited. Almost too excited to go down for their naps. Jake did not need grumpy children on Halloween.
After naps, and baking Halloween cookies, it was finally time to get ready. They each took a child and helped them dress. Myka wanted ‘Bath’ to help her. Jake put the Tick-Tock Crocodile costume on Eli. They decided against the heavier costume and went with the one with pants and a shirt he could wear again. It had a clock on the shirt. The costume had a cute little hood and a tail that you fastened on. He looked adorable. Jake’s fear was that Eli either wouldn’t keep in on, or would never want to take it off.
Myka looked cute in her pirate costume. Her hair fell in little ringlets, and she had an eyepatch that wouldn’t last past the first fifteen minutes. Her outfit was topped off with little black boots, that she already owned, and a black pirate hat.
Jake watched the kids to make sure they didn’t take everything off while Sebastian put on his costume. He was mostly worried about Eli. The boy was prone to strip for no reason at all.
