It had taken time to gain the trust of various packs, but the Eclipse pack had come through. In the last few months, they’d made progress. They’d crashed a bunker and disabled a handful of smaller operations. Now they paused.
There were pups on the way.
He turned and circled his arms around his mate, looking deep into her eyes. Leaning down, he touched his forehead to hers and breathed in to fill his nostrils with the sweet summer scent of her. She smelled even more intoxicating now that she carried his offspring. Twins, he guessed. A rarity among lupine, which meant the ancestors had seen fit to bless him extra. Maybe for all they’d each endured to reach this point.
Occasionally he’d wake to find Sky staring off at the distant stars and rubbing her stomach. She worried about bringing their children into a world where they would be seen as beasts. As freaks. They were delighted to have the chance to start a family but terrified at what that meant. And on nights where Kalle ran free and Sky stayed in place, alone, that concern magnified.
Would their children someday run under the moon, too? Or would they keep their mother company? It was anyone’s guess.
“I don’t want to go,” Kalle said. The words barely left him. Almost caught in his throat for him to choke on. Leaving her to run under the moon was torture and delight at the same time. He felt guilty for how wonderful it felt to his wolf when his human heart broke.
“We’ll be here.” She smiled up at him as if there were no worries for her in the world. “We’ll be waiting with bacon and eggs and that super-salty breakfast sausage you adore. All smothered in syrup.”
He couldn’t help but grin at that. “Life is so much better now that you aren’t starving yourself with lettuce.”
“I ate more than lettuce,” she replied automatically. “Just don’t fill up on fish while you’re out there.”
“I don’t control that.”
“You control the part that tries to bring the fish back,” she said narrowing her eyes playfully. “I don’t want you to trot back home with a fish or prairie dog or squirrel hanging from your muzzle. I won’t cook a muddy, yanked apart carcass.”
He laughed. “You could learn to. It would save us time.”
“Kalle.” Her tone became serious and she placed a flat hand over his heart. Her own steady pulse traveled through her palm to mingle with his. “I don’t fault you for what your soul needs.”
He covered her hand with his. “I know.”
“This is the only time we’re apart, but we aren’t really apart. I can always sense you out there. I know you’re safe and happy. Free. It’s how you need to be.”
“I just wish you could join me.”
“I wish that too. But you know… it’s not so bad to have the camp to myself once a month. It’s not the end of the world, either.”
He sighed heavily. They had this talk all the time. Each time, it sunk in a little more and his spirit felt a little more relieved. “What will you do tonight?”
She bounced on her toes. “I got three face masks, two packets of that amazing dehydrated ice cream, a jar of pickles, and the trashiest romance novel I could find at that second-hand store. The guy is a battle-hardened warrior and the woman is a goddess in disguise as a queen.”
Kalle closed his eyes and kissed her nose. “You’re incorrigible. I’m going to have to choose between breakfast and satisfying your wanton needs in the morning, aren’t I?”
“Maybe. Or you could try eating bacon during sex. I’m not going to stop you.”
“You’re a mess,” he growled. “I never should have brought you home from that bar.”
She traced the outlines of his muscled chest down to his stomach. “You mean you never should have chased me and wound up drugged and collared?”
“I prefer my version.”
“Yeah. The version where a little lady doesn’t overpower you.”
He took her by the arms and lifted her, pressing her back to the nearest tree. His hard length grazed her stomach. “Keep teasing me and you’ll be out for another nine months after this set is done.”
“That’s the plan.” Her now silver eyes twinkled at him.
The look in her eyes gave him pause. “Are you serious?”
“About wanting more? Of course.”
“But…”
She leaned back and gazed up at him, expression brimming with love in a way that made him melt inside. “Our pack. It has room to grow.”
He didn’t get to respond. The moon pulled him down between blinks as if he even knew what to say. But she knew his answer as surely as he did deep down. Even if making pups wasn’t the greatest thing on Earth, he’d still want to do it with her. A family. A pack. He only wished Sierra could see. His heart stuttered in his chest, mourning the loss of his sister.
If only she could witness the happiness that could blossom from pain. That could grow when the remnants of past guilt and sins had been swept away by love.
He knew then that they would add that to their life’s journey. He had to know what happened to her. His children needed her love just as much as she needed theirs. He licked Sky’s palm and gave her a lingering stare before bounding into the woods to chase the moonlight.
He had everything. But he wanted to share it.
