Princess Incognito: a Royal Pain in the Class Page 13

by Humphreys, N. J;

  Plus, he still thinks I’m a YouTube superstar! One day, I’ll have to find a way to solve that puzzle.

  At least he’s got no idea about my real secret, for now. Being an exiled member of a royal family in a violent country is not the kind of secret a girl can keep forever.

  It’s funny though. I don’t miss being a princess that much. All I did was wave at people from the car window. I just miss the King and Queen. I think about Mum and Dad every day, especially at bedtime. Bedtimes are the worst. But I know I’ll see them again. One day. Definitely. I know I will. Who wants to live without their Mum and Dad? Not me.

  I’ll just have to put up with this crazy place for now. I know it’s not perfect. It’s nowhere near perfect. The mac and cheese in the canteen still makes me want to throw up and the school blazer still looks like vomit. But at least I’ve got my mad Uncle Ernie. And I’ve still got this story, my true story. I was going to delete the whole lot, but I think I’ll keep it now. I might even write new stuff, when I’m in the mood. It feels good being honest. Uncle Ernie makes me tell lies all day long. This is my chance to tell the truth, in private, like volume one of an undercover princess or something. That’s a seriously rubbish title. I know it is. I’ll think of an awesome title later.

  But I really must stop now.

  Charles is banging on the door. He’s ready for his first taekwondo lesson. He wants me to turn him into a lean, mean, fighting machine. That could take me ages and ages.

  But I suppose I’m happy to stick around for a bit longer to help my best friend.

  N. J. Humphreys is a bestselling author with 19 titles to his name. An engaging, witty storyteller popular with kids, he grew up in London and saw his first work published at 11, when he was picked to read his funny school journal to the world’s toughest audience – hundreds of kids from his council estate. They laughed. He hasn’t looked back since.

  Among his many children’s books, Humphreys’ Abbie Rose and the Magic Suitcase series are entertaining eco-adventures about a smart, feisty girl on a mission to save endangered animals. He is currently working on the animated TV series with an international broadcaster.

  He is based in Singapore.
