My man’s fighting partner flipped a glowing dagger in her hand and stabbed her opponent in the middle of his chest. His body instantly caught fire and within seconds he was burned down until all that left of him was a pile of dark ashes on the pavement.
I let a cry out when I saw a female vampire trying to backstab Alexandre. With a quick move, my man turned around and wrapped his arm around her jaw. Trying to defend herself, the woman attempted a thrust at Alexandre’s chest right at the moment Alexandre rammed his Trenefor dagger into her.
“Don’t do that - it’s pointless,” a female voice whispered in my mind.
A few seconds passed before Alexandre realized that I was staring at him. Having felt the weight of my gaze, he looked at me, making my pulse race. That was a mistake.
A black-clad creature woman, whose voice I had heard, came flying straight at him, pointing a fiery blade sword and stabbed him in the chest.
CHAPTER FOUR
*
Alexandre lost his balance and collapsed. His Trenefor dagger was still flashing in his hand. “Oh, my God,” I cried and ran through ashes and dust to get to him.
“Protect yourself. Protect our clan.” The words came out of his mouth with a struggle.
I knelt down and gently I put his head on my lap while his fighting partner was literally kicking ashes. Under any other circumstances, I would have admired her immensely, I would have asked her autograph - honestly.
“I got stabbed with a Trenefor dagger, you know what that means.” He started coughing uncontrollably.
“I know. But it has happened before. And nothing happened to you. You’ll get through this time, too,” I said.
“A Trenefor dagger is one of the few things in this world that can cause the death of a vampire,” he said.
I brushed his brown hair with my fingers and swiped a bead of sweat that rolled down from his forehead. “You aren’t going to die,” I whispered. “This time I know what I need to do.”
“I promised to protect you, Stella Burke. You can’t always be the one who saves me, Stella Burke.” His body shivered on my lap.
“This is not the end,” I said. “Give me your ring.”
I got Alexandre’s ring and put it on my finger. It was the ring of his clan and it would add to the power I had just realized that I had.
“Now, I need you to trust me,” I said as placed his head carefully on the floor.
I slit the skin of my wrist with the Trenefor. My heartbeat sped up and my hand trembled when I let a few drops of my blood fall into Alexandre’s mouth.
My lips parted as I looked over his disheveled dark hair and chiseled face. I noticed for the first time the fitting t-shirt that was clinging to his body and his fine linen pants that were hugging his long legs. I didn’t want to take my eyes away from his.
“You feeling good?” I asked nervously, worried of how long it was taking to get him healed, while his partner was having a hard time fighting against two vampires, one male and one female, right in front of us.
Alexandre was lying with his head on my hand, his eyes closed, and his face peaceful. What if I wasn’t the Hybrid and I wasn’t able to save him? Had my blood lost its healing effect on him? I bit my lip and continued staring at him.
Suddenly, Alexandre opened his eyes and gave me a slight nod.
“Did it work?” I asked breathlessly.
“It worked,” he answered, and a broad smile appeared on his face.
With my help, he slowly stood up on his feet. The adrenaline rush was still at a high level in my body. I looked down at myself. My shirt was stretched, my hands were trembling hard.
A wheezing sound coming from the other side of the spacey living room made us turn our heads. Everything happened so fast and with such an amazing accuracy like it was well orchestrated by a supreme force.
“Now watch me!” I shouted and everyone turned around to see me.
No one had noticed that I was wearing all three rings of the mightiest vampire clans. Since the Paris incident, I used to wear the Malkvien ring and the Bariah ring, my prize from our win in that battle. But now I had Alexandre’s ring on my finger, too. The Claitleeff ring, the most powerful ring of all.
“Hand me your Trenefor,” I demanded.
I projected the Trenefor dagger as a spear while I raised my fist with the three vampire rings in the air. A glowing white light erupted from the rings, passed through my body, and ended to the edge of Trenefor. An enormous otherworldly power possessed my body. The cosmic vastness accommodated my tiny human body and little explosions of knowledge shook my soul. My long loud cry stopped when all our opponents evaporated, leaving their swords and rings drop down in a haze of golden mist.
I let my arms fall down exhausted and I closed my eyes, taking a deep breath. I was tired that I didn’t sense Alexandre’s partner coming toward me. When I opened my eyes again, she was in front of me. She knelt down and lowered her head.
“My Queen, I’m Myrcela. I’ll be your loyal subject until the end of my undead life,” she said.
CHAPTER FIVE
*
I squeaked and struggled against Alexandre’s grip. A small cry came out of my mouth, as he tightened his grip on my neck. The bastard smiled cunningly. With the press of his thumb, my muscles started shaking, forcing me to sink to my knees. Still smirking, he leaned forward, and hissed in my ear, “Do you surrender? My Queen?”
My arms held on tight onto his neck and when our eyes met, a ripple of excitement shot through my body. As he sucked on my lower lip, my legs wrapped around his hips. My heart was pounding so hard that I thought it would jump out of my chest. The water in the bathtub we were in was now cold. I looked at him. His cheeks were flushed, his breath erratic.
“It’s cold,” I said and hastily got out of the bathtub and wrapped my body in a soft beige towel. He followed me naked and started to comb my wet hair with his fingers. I looked at myself in the mirror. What kind of dream was this?
“I can’t be a Queen,” I said softly.
“You don’t have a choice,” Alexandre said. “Since you took out both our rival clans, you’re now our new vampire Queen. Furthermore, you’re the Hybrid. You’re the powerful creature that will bridge the differences between vampires and humans.”
“How am I supposed to do that? Just by being a Queen?” My heart was dancing a wild number inside my body.
“Be being you,” Alexandre whispered softly in my ear. “By being who you really are. A kindhearted person with a powerful mind who can dominate every vampire’s mind. No one will question your will.”
“Not even you?” I raised an eyebrow playfully.
“Not even me.”
“Only because I’m the Queen.”
He placed his hand low on my back possessively. I lifted my eyes to his face; he was mesmerizing in his beauty. My heart pounded hard in my chest as he lightly brushed his mouth against mine.
“Only because you’re the Queen of my cold heart. Only because you’re the only one who can put some flame into my cold eyes. Only because I’ll love you until the end of time, until you’ll stop loving me.”
“I’m filling so emotional that I want to bake a cake,” I said smiling before he kissed me hard.
I wanted to bake a Sicilian chocolate love cake so badly. What Alexandre didn’t know was that would be his test for eternal love. If he loved my cakes, he loved me. Although I already knew that he loved us both.
