“Let’s not forget, Harry played his part too,” said Kat, clinking glasses with her husband.
“Harry? Oh, I’m sure he did,” said Max.
“Too kind, Max, too kind,” said Harry.
“But you, Lady Mortimer,” continued Max, “you must know, you are the talk of London society.”
“Well you know what they say about ‘talk’.”
Then Kat sat back in her plush seat, the orchestra below getting ready to play.
“Of course,” said Max. “Nobody knows quite why you did what you did – just that Grosvenor was deeply dishonourable, and you were somehow righting a grievous wrong. At the Savoy Grill, no less!”
“A wrong righted? Long may it remain that way,” said Kat. “It’s just such a shame that Lizzie’s parents couldn’t be–”
“Hell-lo! Lizzie’s parents?” came Nicola Green’s voice from the open door of the box. “They’re right here! Just made it.”
Kat looked up to see Nicola standing with Aubrey and Glenys Spence, arm in arm, and all dressed up to the nines.
“Gosh!” said Glenys. “That train! So slow! I thought we’d never get here!”
Kat looked at Aubrey, who nodded and half-smiled at her and Harry.
They’d made an agreement – with Lizzie and Nicola too – that Glenys should never know what really happened in Lizzie’s missing weeks in London.
And Glenys – it seemed – was so thrilled by Lizzie landing a part in this year’s hit West End musical that she’d barely mentioned it.
Kat looked across at Nicola as the new arrivals all took their seats and the house lights went down.
As the overture began – a bouncy, innocent, carefree number – she felt Harry’s hand on hers, giving it a gentle squeeze.
When the curtain went up – and the chorus line spun onto the stage, and Lizzie Spence high-kicked her way into her debut performance – Kat felt a thrill of relief and joy at what she and Harry had achieved…
… followed by just a twinge of pain in that hand to remind her to be more careful of how she formed a fist next time she had to lay somebody out.
Because – she knew for sure – there would be a next time.
London, Mydworth – wherever she and Harry ended up – it was always going to be eventful!
