Faith and Jessy look at each other as if they are hoping the other had a reasonable explanation.
“They’re out here!” Beth hollers.
“No! What are you doing Beth?” Jessy asks.
Father Good and Mother hope arrive to find the two girls covered in dirt.
“How dare you go against my wishes. There will be dire consequences to your actions. Now get inside.” Faith picks up the shovel and swings it frantically back and forth.
“Stay back! Don’t take another step. Keep going Jessy I’ll hold them off!”
Rushing to her knees, she uses her fingers until snapping a fingernail against a human bone. She presses past the pain and continues scratching and clawing to unbury the skeletal remains. Suddenly falling backwards and throwing her hands over her mouth, she scoots away from the grave.
“Is it her? Answer me Jessy!” Faith asks
“Yes, and more.”
Cutting her eyes over to the pit, she and Jessy suddenly find themselves in the Fathers clade clutches. Their long hair tightly wrapping around his knuckles.
“Open the door.” He orders Hope.
Dragging them along the floor and then up the winding steps to the first chamber at the top of the staircase. Tossing Jessy inside before Hope swiftly locks the door. Then he pulls Faith into the room next door.
“Make him aware of the situation. Now leave us be.” He commands Mother Hope.
Doing as she is told, Faith is left at the Father’s mercy.
“I didn’t want to believe it. But you threw her and the others away like they were nothing. She deserved better!” Faith cries out.
“I am warning you, shut up! You don’t have a clue as to what you have done. You see a string and what do you do? You tug it, unraveling centuries of a design that you know nothing about. She was a casualty and that I do regret. But you don’t let one mistake ruin thousands of years.” He says, slapping the palm of his hand against the wall.
“Tell me why? I…”
“We are a creation of God. To be like our creator, to live in his image. Not even He could resist forbidden fruit. He carefully crafted woman. Too delicious not to taste at least once. See we aren’t the only ones, there’s many like us. Here for those touched by His mighty hand. To deliver His word to the world. They have needs too. Just like you or I. Our purpose is to feed those desires. The church is under scrutiny because some priests can’t keep it in their pants. Letting common whores lead them down the path paved in damnation. It’s a risk the Vatican can not take, so here we are. They donate generously to homes and schools. You’re bought before you even bleed. From day one you’re broken and molded to be nothing more than pleasure for the holy of holiness. We do try to keep it fresh. New girls. We wouldn’t want them getting bored. But you…you’re different Faith . You’re a second-generation Mother. It’s in your blood.
“You know nothing about me!”
A devilish smirk slices across his face.
“I know more about you than you even know about yourself. Let me fill in some blanks. Your mother was an obedient servant, so willing to do as she was asked She was just a sister here when she was found to have the seed of our most holy Pope growing inside of her. We embraced her and the unborn child. You can’t even begin to know my disappointment when she vanished in the middle of the night. The Clergy couldn’t just let her go. She was a ticking time bomb that threatened to destroy all that we’ve had built.”
“You killed my mother?” She sobs
“No. She made that choice. I protected her. She knew the risk leaving here. I couldn’t save her out there. But there is still hope for you. After all the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.” He says, gently rubbing his hand over Faiths stomach.
“What now? I die like my mother. Or worse like Emily?”
“What now? You tell me. You can take the rope in my pocket and humanely put our dear Jessy out of her misery, and we can fulfill our purpose together. Raise our child within the protection of these walls. You and it will not want for nothing. Or you can join Jessy and Beth and your baby won’t ever know its first breathe.
