Our War Page 34

by Craig DiLouie

These images would plague her dreams until the sun returned to burn away the night’s terrors. In the dark, she could never forget, but in the light of day, she could forgive. One day, she might even forgive herself.

On that day, she’d heal, find herself rather than get lost, and learn the magic of making something out of nothing. Her memories of her family, who’d died helping her survive, would fill her only with love and not emptiness and anger and guilt. That was her cause now.

Until then, Hannah would pray with all her heart for those she left behind. She’d pray that all the child soldiers would forever wake to sunlight instead of gunfire.

Return to childhood and, being children, learn to play again.

  ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

It was impossible to write a novel about love and hate without reflecting on the people I care about most. I’d like to thank my children and my partner, Chris Marrs, whose love keeps me going.

I’d also like to express my gratitude to those who shaped my journey as a writer: Eileen DiLouie, Chris DiLouie, John Dixon, Peter Clines, David Moody, Timothy W. Long, Ron Bender, Ella Beaumont, Randy Heller, Chris Arnone, Jim Curtis, Anthony McCurdy, all my IFWA and HWA friends, and many others.

To you all, I’d like to say: “May you live in interesting times.” But only the good kind of interesting.

Another hearty thanks goes to Jean-François Bissonnette, who was kind enough to help a friend of a friend on Facebook with some French-Canadian translations.

Finally, I’d like to thank David Fugate, my amazing agent, and Bradley Englert, the best editor I could hope for, who always knows how to get the best out of me.
