Vanished Page 22

by Eden Darry

  “I’m sorry,” Dani said again.

“I know you are. So am I,” Ellery said and stood back from the rail. The thought of Loveday waiting for her saved her from complete despair.

“It’s not long now. There’s not much further to go.” Dani put her hand on Ellery’s arm and Ellery found the strength from somewhere to nod.

They would walk on. They’d keep going. They’d already won.

  Epilogue

The storm came just as they reached a makeshift camp part way up Ben Nevis. A group of survivors—some from Rosemary’s hangar but most from the rest of the country—had set up tents and campfires in a semi-sheltered part of the mountain.

The survivors, including Ellery, Loveday, and Dani, stayed there for several weeks. That was the time it took for the storm to eventually die down. Just like in their dreams, when they hiked down to look, they could see the water level had risen so high that it covered most of the lower land.

All in all there were probably a few hundred people in their camp, and they knew there were more scattered over Ben Nevis and the higher ground.

Rosemary’s hangar and her boat had been swept away before the water receded again. Nothing of their old world was left.

Loveday sat outside the tent she shared with Ellery. Dani had the one next door, and the pets moved from one to the other depending on their moods.

“I found some mushrooms.” Ellery sat down beside her and held out a fistful of them.

“No way am I eating those.” Loveday shook her head.

  “They’re safe.”

  “Says who?”

  “Nathan.”

Loveday rolled her eyes. Nathan was Ellery’s new friend and survival guru. He seemed nice enough, but one episode of Bear Grylls did not a survivalist make.

“I’m not touching them and neither are you. And if Nathan’s got any sense he won’t either.”

“Fine,” Ellery said and put them back in her pocket. “Where’s Dani?”

“She made a new friend.” Loveday grinned.

Although most people knew about Dani and that Rosemary had wanted to kill her, she’d asked Loveday and Ellery not to mention some of her more unusual talents. Though Loveday thought with idiots like Nathan eating random mushrooms, they’d need them soon.

  “The Butterworth girl?” Ellery asked.

“The very one. They’ve been spending a lot of time together. It’s sweet.”

“Whatever you do, don’t tell Dani you think it’s sweet.”

Loveday waved her hand. “Of course not. I’m not a total idiot.”

“When did they head off?” Ellery asked.

Loveday squinted at the sun. She was still having trouble telling the time by it. “About an hour ago. Why?” She looked at Ellery.

Ellery waggled her eyebrows and nodded towards the tent.

Loveday’s stomach flipped, and she grinned. Living in such close quarters with a teenager didn’t leave much alone time. They had to take it where they could get it.

  “Race you,” Loveday said.

They zoomed into the tent, laughing.
