“My thoughts are focused on my new position. You know me, Evie, you know how important it is for me to prove myself to Brooklynn and Ty. It’s nothing for you to be concerned about, and I’m sorry if I worried you.” Taking her hand in his, he rose pulling her to her feet. “I want to introduce Alicia to a couple of people. Can we meet you back at the cabin?”
“Sure, I’m tired anyway.” Evie glanced at Alicia. “You’ll talk to him, right?”
“You have my word.” Alicia nodded.
A moment later, they were alone, and she glanced up at her mate. “Now you want to tell me the truth?”
“First, what did she want you to talk to me about?” Frost sat down in the chair Evie vacated and leaned closer.
“We were talking about a shopping trip. If we’re going to make this a home for her, then we need to make her comfortable. Let her decorate her room how she’d like to. In order to do that, we need to make a trip into town, maybe do some online shopping as well, depending on what selection we can find locally. But something has changed, hasn’t it?”
He dragged his hand through his hair, drawing the strands away from his face before meeting her gaze. “We received another message from Lorcan. Omar found Roxanne’s body, and he’s blaming us for her death. He wants us to know he’s coming for us.”
“Because of me.” She leaned back against her chair. “You rescued me, bringing me here, and because of that, Lorcan has decided he’s coming after this clan now.”
“It’s not your fault. The clan would have had to deal with Lorcan’s group eventually. From what I gathered it was coming to a head even before we arrived.” Frost placed his hand over hers. “We’re hoping nothing changes before we find the chief of police’s daughter in California. Having the information she holds will give us an upper hand.”
“Ty’s going to take the fight to them, isn’t he? Your team will be on the front lines.” Knowing the answer, Alicia linked their fingers.
“It won’t only be us. Besides the team and members from this clan there’s going to be others joining us. The wolves—Titan and Alvin—are going to be arriving here the day after tomorrow with Titan’s mate. They’ll be joining us when we go to Washington D.C. There will be other allies joining us as well. Richard Maynard is sending a group too, though from what Ty said, I suspect Richard to be among those fighting. He wants a hand at taking down those responsible for Lou’s death.” He teased his thumb over her knuckles. “Lorcan’s group is dangerous, we can’t allow them to continue their terror on the Washington D.C. residents or other clans. Lorcan knew about the wolves Roxanne kept prisoner, and he did nothing.”
The thought of him facing off with Lorcan dried her mouth and tightened her stomach. Terror didn’t seem a strong enough word for what filled her. The mention of Maynard brought the memory of Lou’s death to the surface until she could see Omar standing before her. Blood dripped from his fingers as he gripped Lou’s heart in his hands. His gaze focused on her as if drilling holes into her. “You’ll beg for a quick death when we’re done with you.”
“I’m never going to let him near you,” Frost whispered in her ear pulling her back from the nightmare. Opening her eyes, she found herself in Frost’s lap, his arms tight around her waist. Sinking into his embrace, she sucked in a deep breath.
“I’ve got you, baby.”
“Sorry.” She tipped her head back, resting it on his shoulder, as she stared up at him.
“There’s no reason to be sorry.” Teasing his fingers along her arm, he pressed his lips to her temple. “We’re going to end his reign of terror and make it safe for you and everyone else. That’s why I wanted to join the Shifter Peace Keepers. I wanted to make this a safe world for Evie. I never dreamed it would open so many doors for me or bring me my mate.”
“I’m blessed you found me.” She tipped her head toward him bringing their lips close. “I’m scared because of what I learned of Lorcan’s gang, not because I don’t believe you’ll do what you said. I know you’ll take them on and eliminate the threat. I don’t want anyone getting hurt.”
“I’ll come back to you and Evie.” He pressed his forehead against hers. “I love you, Alicia, I’ll always come back to you. You have to know that.”
“I know.” He arrived when she needed someone and he saved her. Being the hero was who he was. Still she didn’t doubt he’d fight with his last breath to get back to them. “My Iceman, I love you, too.” She pressed her lips to his, allowing her action to prove her words were true.
