“But were Brand and the P.I. alone for any period of time for the man to have access to Brand’s phone?” Hawkeye asked.

  Carly shook her head.

“What about Petree? Did you ever see Brand lay his phone down when Petree was around?”

“No, but I wasn’t with them when Brand and Kevin went shopping for his suit. Kevin took him to the places he usually went and I stayed at the apartment. I can’t imagine that he’d do anything to harm us. He’s been so great all week.”

“I’m not saying the man is guilty, I’m looking at the possibilities of who had access to Brand’s phone. I’ll get a tech guy down here to examine it and make sure it hasn’t been tampered with so we will know for sure why the signals have been crossed.”

Hours passed and it was after midnight before Carly was able to go to the ER to see Brand. When she returned, she reported that he was awake and responsive. She’d even spoken to the doctor and had a good report on Brand.

“The kick boxing blow caused agitation to the phrenic nerve due to the hit near the diaphragm. The doctor believes he’ll be fine. He was very lucky. There were no broken ribs.”

Liam let out the breath he had been holding since Carly started talking.

  “When can we see him?”

“Tomorrow? I’m afraid he’s gone back to sleep now. Sorry. I know you and Will have been waiting a long time for news and a chance to see him.”

“Don’t be sorry, Carly. We’ll see him tomorrow,” Will said.

“Sure. He needs his rest tonight. Tomorrow is soon enough,” Liam agreed.

“There is one more piece of news. I’m not sure if Brand would want me to share it or not,” Carly said, “but the shrapnel in his chest has moved. He can now have surgery to get it out, but he doesn’t want it. At least not right now because of recovery time.”

“What? But that is what kept him from returning to the SEALs.” Will bounced back and forth on the balls of his feet. “Doesn’t he realize what chance he’s been given?”

“He does…at least he says he does.”

“Ultimately it is Brand’s choice.” Liam got it. He looked over where Simone sat still talking with the brunette. “I think we’ll head out.”

“Okay. Thank you for coming.” Carly gave him a hug.

Liam walked over to where Simone was and held out his hand to her. She took it and stood, looking back at her friend.

  “I’ll see you around, Chicca.”

The brunette eyed him. “You have her tamed. You must be something special.”

Simone giggled. “I never kiss and tell.”

  “Since when?” the brunette asked.

“Yeah, since when?” Carly asked, taking Simone’s place on the two seater.

“Since I have Don Juan in my life.”
